i'm officially a genius
When I was younger I hated romantic comedies. But it just occurred to me that what I actually hated was films/shows with sexist stereotypes and heteronormative bullshit. Turns out I actually fucking love romantic comedies now that I've figured out they can be queer and/or not full of toxic patriarchal nonsense.
ofmd ramble post
i've seen so many people on here discuss the season finale already and i just wanted to put my 2 cents in (spoilers for ofmd season 2 episode 8)
IMHO it's exceptionally cruel to make a character suffer as much as Izzy did, go to the trouble of building him up again with scars and growth and family, only to kill him for drama and another character's development.
Our flag means death episode eight spoilers below. If you haven't seen it yet- what're you doing? Go watch it!
Here is my take on Izzy's death.
I have seen a few people saying this is a "bury your gays" situation. It isn't. There were so many other queer characters that got their happy endings. What it was was poor writing.
I love this story. I adore these characters. But the way Izzy died? Killed by a stray bullet? Really? That doesn't feel like him at all. The whole season worked so hard to redeem him in the eyes of the audience, just to kill him?
I do not think he should have died. Period. It doesn't really add anything to the story. All it does is what? Help speed to Ed's arc? I hate that. I think that this, as he lay dying, was the first time he truly had Ed's entire attention the whole season, if not the whole show. Ed clearly didn't value him as he should have, and it makes me so angry that Ed is who they decided Izzy would want to die in the arms of. Him saying that he was ready to go? Right as he became happy with the people around him? It just doesn't make sense for the character. And him telling Ed that the crew loved him? No, they didn't. The crew loved Izzy and Stede. They put up with Ed because of that. If it weren't for those two, Ed would've been off the ship if not dead a while ago.
If he had to die, they should have given him a better death, like protecting a member of the crew from being hit or stabbed. He should have died in the arms of the crew, who did value him and see him for who he was. Who loved him so much, and who actually valued him for who he was. He should have had a burial at sea and not on land. He should have been buried with the prothstetic that the crew made for him, the prosthetic that he loved. He should have been buried with his mothers ring. He deserved better.
[OFMD S2 spoilers]
I do think that OFMD is now only showing queer rep in a way that is funny and palatable to cis het viewers. This season was a horrendous let down in more ways than just Izzy's half-assed "redemption" and death.
Jim got barely any screen time this season and is randomly paired up with one-dimensional Archie instead of Oluwande, and now they're just "family"? And Izzy is apparently just a "father figure" to Ed this whole time? Huh!?
I don't even recall a single moment they referred to Jim by using their pronouns this season. It felt like they were avoiding it.
There were a lot less making out and overtly flirty scenes as well. It's like they took all the sensuality and sexuality out, and every relationship felt very cutesie-wootsie and watered down unless they were making a joke ("I saw BOTH her boobs", "We had sex for 24 hours")
It was especially clear between Lucius and Pete, who then got the blandest "wedding" and were called "MATEYS" ffs. Not even HUSBANDS. Seriously, what was that about? They didn't even try to make it look like a real wedding or decorate or anything, which is really out of character for Black Pete and Lucius.
Ed and Stede's relationship has been drawn out to a ridiculous degree.
Ed decides it might be time to move on and he gives up his leathers and breaks up with Stede to go be a fisherman for not even TWO DAYS before coming back and getting back together without them actually talking about anything. The last two episodes had me constantly rolling my eyes. Was I watching two grown men or two middle schoolers?
They look insane at this point and not in a good way. In my opinion, it is bordering on offensive. Just let them be together and happy.
Don't even get me started on the random crazy lesbians 🤪 episode.
Im devestated
Rant about the finale (or the million reasons why I'm disappointed)
Spoilers alert so don't keep reading if you don't wanna see them.
Didn't see a lot of people disappointed with the finale for the same reasons as me so just gonna throw it out there: I am disappointed mainly because of how they portrayed Stede and his relationship with Ed.
First thing, I am NOT an Izzy fan. If anything I'm probably an Ed fan and I came to the show for the brilliant writing, the masterly use of comedy as a genre, and the unprecedented celebration of queerness in season 1. This means that I am not devastated by his death. BUT I am disappointed in their decision to kill him off. I saw David Jenkins' interview and discussion about how narratively it makes sense for him to die as a closure of the redemption arch and final consummation of Ed letting go of the old life. YET this show was never about structurally sound narrative, was it? The charm was always the characters' growth and how they embraced queerness - embraced themselves. And that theme was embodied by Izzy this season. I can see potential in him as a perfectly comic and beautifully queer character after his transformation but that potential died with him. It is abrupt, it is rushed, and it does not make any sense for the spirit of the show even when it makes sense for a symbolic narrative.
Second, the main thing - even though Stede is the lead character of the show, the finale does not treat him as one. From previous episodes we see a new side of him emerging. He was caught up in the rush, the same way Ed probably did so many years ago, and was unawarely soaking up some toxic masculinity even though it was because he pursued piracy as the ultimate means to release his queerness and find community. And there lies his new conflict with Ed: two people who love each other deeply but find themselves on different life paths. There was not really any conflict of interest that couldn't be solved but they needed time to figure things out. Stede needed a reality check, and he needed to understand Ed's "it's everything about fishing" - it's everything about how Ed was setting out to find a new identity, and how he fears that Stede is taking up his old path in misguided glory and will not come with him. And Stede needed to learn to respect Ed's choices even if it means they take different paths for a while, which also means that he needed to confront his own fear of incompetence, abandonment, loneliness, and rejection first (which hasn't really been addressed in this season yet). He needed to find confidence and faith - in his own identity and competence, and in Ed's love for him.
All this to say - he has a long way to go in his character development to justify resolving the conflicts in their relationship. Yet in the finale, he was not given any space or time to achieve the growth. We see him rushing through a plan of rescue with Zheng doing most of the work. We see him coming up with a plan to camouflage and escape the English, the portrayal of which did not show his wit or courage or anything profound about his character. Then we see him getting that happy ending with Ed, and somehow just... accepting giving up piracy, accepting Ed's change, accepting everything happily when he was clearly lost and confused before. And we were not given any explanation or portrayal of his inner conflicts. He, of all people, gets the least emphasis and character growth in the finale.
Again, I just see so much potential to really discuss the character's deeply-rooted psychological issues going to waste for the sake of a narrative structure. A happy ending is great but it's covering up so many unsolved tensions and conflicts - opportunities for character building - which would have been handled much more carefully (albeit in comedic style) in season one. Given that we might not get a season 3, this is worse than leaving me with a cliffhanger or temporary tragedy that makes sense for the character's path to growth.
hes very cute to me
I was waiting for this scene at the end of Fionna and Cake.
