So I just found this very cool tool for previewing a new pronoun set (and chosen name, if you so wish!) and I think it’s definitely worth a look if you’re in the midst of a pronoun dilemma as so many of us are.

It’s crazy how Europeans spent centuries colonizing, brutalizing and destabilizing most of the world and when the people from the places they worked (and are often still benefiting from) to destroy and exploit flee to Europe, they’re baffled and enraged. Why would your NHS nurse be Nigerian? Hmmm. I wonder who the Queen of Nigeria was up until 1963. Oh, you’re mad your new neighbors are Pakistani? I wonder who the head of the Commonwealth was there until 1972. This is truly baffling.
I will remind people that one of the biggest signs of a scam is urgency. A scammer does not want you to look away or click out of the tab or hang up the phone. They make you feel like there's a very close time limit, like you have to act NOW if you want to protect your bank account/not get arrested/help your (grand)child/save an animal/save a person/etc, and they will use manipulation tactics like guilt tripping and making you feel rushed to keep you from taking a step back and having a moment to think.
If someone who is asking for money is rushing you, making you feel pressured to give them money immediately and making you feel guilty or like you're in some sort of danger if you have any questions or doubts or hesitation, they are scamming you. They are doing everything they can to get your money before you have time to think or do any research, and then they vanish as soon as they get what they want.

You do not need to look like a tiktok influencer. You do not need to have perfect hair without any flyaway hairs or frizz, especially if you have curls. You do not need flawless skin. You do not need to wear makeup at all but you especially don't need to wear foundation, concealer, highlighter, blush, contour, and all that bullshit. You do not need flawless nails. You do not need a closet full of designer clothes (or dupes). You do not need a closet full of clothes you only wear once but that fit the latest trend. You do not need to look ready for a photo shoot 24/7.
These influencers don't even look like that! They use filters and edits on their photos and videos, they rent designer clothes, they spend plenty of time without makeup and fancy clothes, all of that. Then they go online and and make fun of completely regular looking people to make everyone else insecure and more likely to buy whatever they're selling.
Most people aren't wearing tailored designer clothes or wearing $200 worth of makeup and skincare or wearing enough product that their hair wouldn't move in a hurricane. That is fine. You are fine. Go take public transportation or visit the local library and remind yourself what real people look like in their day-to-day lives instead of letting social media rewire your perception of human bodies.

It's wild coming from a household where people would go "well we're not going to cancel everything and ruin everybody's day just because you're feeling uncomfy" when all you wanted was to be allowed to go lie down for a minute because you're sick, to living around people who'll go "okay let's wrap shit up and go home, you're sick" when you were still pretty sure you can manage if you just go lie down.
Also did y'all know that playing up your symptoms for pity and attention is a completely different thing from just not going out of your way to hide your symptoms. Like apparently those are two different subjects. It's not manipulative to be visibly unwell when you're visibly unwell.
I was in Mormon brain jail concurrently to when Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped and held, as it turned out, like 20 miles away from us. We would see billboards when we were driving past in our big white institution van, and we would see magazines in the checkout aisle, on the rare occasions we were allowed to enter shops accompanied, about Elizabeth Smart being held somewhere by some guy. This teenage girl who had been kidnapped and brainwashed and held basically in the next valley over. I don't remember how long she was with him, but this was when everyone was freshly looking for her and panicking about how she had been abducted and was being held against her will and brainwashed. Her picture was EVERYWHERE.
So. Imagine dozens of other teenage girls, being held against their will and brainwashed in Utah, seeing these billboards and going, "huh. I'm having a complicated emotional reaction to all of this. It's possible that I might unpack that in two to three decades."
Both of these situations arise from the same societal attitudes. This guy wanted a teenage girl to be trapped with him and unable to leave, regardless of her feelings on the matter, and for her to act a certain way and comply with his desires. He took her from her home and forced her to be somewhere she did not want to be and would not let her go, and he tried to turn her into a different thing. The difference in societal reactions to when one specific, unauthorized guy does this, compared to when someone's parents pay a fancy sounding institution to do it for them, tells you a lot about how we think about the autonomy of teenage girls.
In Utah, the reason these types of institutions are allowed is because their youth rights laws are abysmal even compared to the rest of the US. Children aren't people, they're the property of their parents. Elizabeth Smart's parents didn't want her to be kidnapped, so it was bad. Our parents did want us to be kidnapped, so it was fine.
Elizabeth Smart’s kidnapper’s crime was that he didn’t go through the established system for kidnapping and brainwashing teenage girls. This is not even a little bit hyperbolic.
Some ppl are confused about this, I recommend at the very least reading the Wikipedia article on the troubled teen industry. For more info, you can listen to Paris Hilton's podcast Trapped in Treatment or the Salt Lake Tribune's podcast Sent Away (or both). This is something you probably should know about if you have any interest in mental health treatment or youth rights in the USA. (Thanks Kuzu for the latter two recs!)
The types of institutions I'm referring to, which operate primarily in Utah, accept kids who have no criminal history or history of drug use, which is usually a requirement in other states, or that is my understanding of how it worked at the time I was imprisoned. And I am equally against them in both cases, to be clear. 👍
I totally support disarming households where domestic violence is occurring. I know that is a controversial and opinion with a nuanced discussion surrounding it. A single call should be enough for there to be noooooo more guns in the residence. Gun deaths go up significantly when there is a gun in the residence. It usually ends in a homicide or a suicide, sometimes both. In the rare event that a victim shoots their abuser, they are drug through the courts like a fucking dog. Guns do not defuse arguments, they escalate them so quickly and so often. I’m so tired of known violent abusers being allowed their guns or having them briefly confiscated and immediately returned while people who were convicted of nonviolent felonies are not allowed to own guns at all. Either we’re disarming people who pose an active risk to others or we’re approving of family violence related homicides.

guy with a long, documented history of angry outbursts and assaulting people: I definitely did not assault my child and the multiple romantic partners who have come forward to allege that I am physically abusive. That is ridiculous. Also, my ex wife is bipolar, which is not documented anywhere but it obviously means she is immune to being the victim of domestic violence.

Some abusers do follow through and commit suicide after their victim escapes and I hate the way that victims are treated after that happens. The abuser did not kill themselves because they ‘loved their [victim] so much they couldn’t live without them’, they killed themselves because they lost control and dying a martyr was better than sticking around and putting up with the fallout and reputational damage. They killed themselves because it was one final way to hurt their victim and leave them with a massive mess to clean up. In a hypothetical world where they actually killer themselves because they ‘loved their [victim] so much they couldn’t live without them’, the victim should still be under absolutely no obligation to stay and that is an unhealthy dynamic for both of them.
This happens between couples, in parent-child relationships, in friendships and other dynamics but I have to specifically highlight it within the context of domestic violence committed by a male partner against a female partner. The reaction is particularly rancid because there is a societal expectation that women should ‘take care of’ men and be responsible for them. A woman can spend 15 years trying to help a violent man get better when he has no desire to do so and when she finally leaves for the safety of herself and her children and he ends his life, she is blamed for it. As though he wasn’t the perpetrator, as though he wouldn’t have killed her and the kids if he had continued access. I wish I could say this is uncommon but a not insignificant number of men commit suicide after their wife files for divorce/after their divorce is finalized and reactionary misogynists continuously point to this as a reason divorce is bad or women are evil instead of acknowledging that that guy was holding his family hostage and ended his life when his hostages escaped.

Could you have gotten four eggs' worth of protein some other way? Perhaps. Would you have done that, being real? Probably not.
Resteraunt servers have the funniest and most surreal workplace stories of any profession. They have the job that mean nurses think they have. The entire world is working against them the entire shift. And then you feel terrible for laughing. It’s not funny that you tripped and spilled an entire ice tea all over a toddler and the kid started screaming at the top of his lungs. Nobody was having a good day, thank God it wasn’t a hot coffee. That’s not funny. I did laugh so hard tears started rolling down my face when you recounted this mortifying ordeal though.

On a different topic, Native artists and organizations have GOT to get their own websites. I am being so serious right now.
When your shop or info is restricted to sites like instagram and facebook, which only let registered users view a lot of posts and message people, then your customer base and audience is restricted to people who use those sites. I don't have facebook or instagram or tiktok or anything like that. If someone is like "DM me for commissions on instagram :)" or "event info is available on facebook!" then that is an immediate end to my interest. There are so many Native artists I'd love to support but I just can't because they literally only do business through DMs on social media that I don't use. That sucks. Make a website.
"But I do work on commission so I don't have stock to put in a store!" Make a website showcasing photos of your work, both commissions and your personal pieces, with general price guidelines and include either a contact form to begin the commission or a professional email to contact. Do not put your business behind unnecessary barriers.
