I’m so tired of the “why do people hate aspecs, they aren’t doing anything?” argument. I know that it is an attempt to support us, but it fails so spectacularly to understand aromanticism, asexuality, and any other aspec identity that it’s actively frustrating.

We are doing something. We’re rejecting allonormative ideals and that’s a massive thing to do. We’re actively fighting not just to help other aspecs, but to help everyone, because amatonormativity (and allonormativity as a whole) hurt everyone. Single people who want to find a partner but can’t also deserve to be able to exist.

There are so many issues with the expectation of marriage, including:

A single income isn't enough to get by anymore

Having a spouse is almost necessary under the current medical system

Society shames and pressures people who are single to get into relationships constantly

Rejecting allonormativity means fighting against these things that hurt everyone.

So, no, aces and aros and other aspecs aren't "doing nothing." We're doing quite a lot.

As much discourse there is within our communities (especially as of recently), I will always hold a deep respect and appreciation for it.

I think sometimes it's easy to get wrapped up in negativity, disagreements, and definition discourse. And sure, sometimes it's important to do so. But there's also so much to appreciate about us too.

Yes, times are changing, and I miss certain things from the past as well. But I will always be grateful that these communities validated my existence. That the way I thought, felt, and lived was okay. That being a canine was something to embrace, and not hide.

Getting caught up in disagreements feels trivial to me. We're all animals, creatures, and concepts. We're all in this thing together.

I recommend the movie FRiCK that's being worked on rn. The main character has tourettes and they just made it a portion of who he is. He isn't just defined by his disability. Im excited to see how it plays out, though a tad skeptical because none of the writers have tourettes. However! It does look like they're doing research, and the tics seem accurate (at least to my own tics). If you align yourself with alternative identities and have tics, I think it'll be a good movie for folks like us.

I always get compliments on my masks, especially from younger therians (who I'm assuming are excited to see someone older than them openly expressing themself). I thought it would be nice if I could offer them a free one, even those that aren't wearing gear, but just mention the mask.
