My Japanese teacher: Does this count as a love scene?
I'm just here to remind you that this is what Watson must have seen when he walked into that lab after Stanford
That this stranger grabbed him by the clothes to enthusiastically show him his new discovery, and then they went to live together
ok, I'm leaving again, bye
Let's not forget what Watson would have looked like though
Of course Holmes grabbed him. Neither of them are to blame for their actions
Some where in Kent, (in England, of course), there's a hill called Holmes Hill, and on that hill is a cottage, called Watson's Cottage. I know this because I happened to drive that way coming home, as there was severe queues on the M25 for this time of day.
It gives me (frankly an absurd) amount of joy, and peace, knowing that no matter what, these two will somehow always be together. It almost makes one believe in something grand, and Romantic, and silly, like soulmates.
Historically, in many places, the monarchy and institutions in power allowed a small group of elites an education while most of the population remained illiterate. That structure perpetuated the hierarchy because those at the bottom were clueless about their own situation and the world outside of their little cottage. Even if they were dissatisfied there was not much they could do to change that. The ruling class kept "peasants" uneducated because that protected their interest.
Modern literacy is what allowed for things like social mobility, activism, the strive for better policies, better quality of life, better future for all.

Time to lock in Near
Death Note characters as hit Britney Spears songs
(I will not elaborate)
Light Yagami - Oops...I Did It Again
L Lawliet - ...Baby One More Time
Mello - I'm a Slave 4 U
Near - Gimme More
Amane Misa - Circus
Takada Kiyomi - Toxic
Mikami Teru - (You Drive Me) Crazy
Rem - If You Seek Amy
Ryuk - Work Bitch
Aizawa Shuuichi - Womanizer
Matsuda: I hope you get run over.
Light: Hoping is all well and good, but ultimately, it gets you nowhere. Be the change you want to see in the world... Get in your car and run me the fuck over yourself. You coward. You lazy fool.

people always say that near is a cheap copy of L but. listen. there’s only 1 death note character who took L’s name for 5 years, made absolutely zero progress, probably irreparably damaged his global reputation in the process, and well. it’s not near
naomi misora's function as a plot device is very important to death note for many reasons:
closest call light has had up to this point. extremely suspenseful episode/chapters
it was hinted at with light staring raye down in the subway but naomi's death drives in how much light loves telling people he's kira right before they die which is a critical character trait right up to the end
furthers the themes of suicide and suicidal ideation that death note so loves
first (only?) person to call light and L similar out loud to light's face
first person to have a direct connection to and grief for one of kira's victims. light and L's points of view are extremely narrowed in on the game and naomi forces the world to widen and show that the mass murder has actual impact on real people caught up in their wake
first person light has to use significant social manipulation on - i'm not counting yuri because she wasn't the component on which his spaceland plan rested. demonstrates for the first time the extent of light's ability to mask as boy-next-door
most sympathetic victim yet. was even less of a direct threat to light's life than raye was, plus she's acting out of grief for her fiance. demonstrates for the first time the extent of light's cruelty
i also think naomi is a fantastic character in and of herself but she is a critical part of death note's arc as well imo. her existence might not contribute much to the logical deduction side of the plot progression (though her disappearance is the final straw that gets the task force + L to focus on the people raye penber was stalking) but is so so important for the development of our protagonist and the establishment of the world around him that taking her out would not only remove one of the most iconic scenes in manga/anime but also destroy a HUGE amount of the subtler thematic and character work.
The Naomi arc really demonstrates Light's ability to manipulate and his mobility when working alone. He's equally able to devise a plan and make improvisation. Most importantly, he knows precisely the right thing to say.
To force Raye to unknowingly use the Death Note, Light threatens Raye's loved ones. At that point, information about Kira's killing method is not yet widely known. Light knows it, Light knows Raye will believe those threats. It doesn't matter that Light can't kill them, it matters that Raye believes he can.
I mentioned it in my video but Light manipulates Naomi by giving her something she's been consistently denied of: external validation. Her fiancé doesn't like it when she makes deductions and tells her to stop. When she shows up at HQ with evidence, they turn her away (even though it's their protocol, it's still a rejection). But Light loudly professes his trust in her and swears that he's willing to vouch for her. He throws in a couple of "you're young and beautiful" just in case. He gives her confidence, assurance, hope
And that's how he got her
(It also explains why Light struggles so much in the second half, he no longer has that mobility and versatility, both due to circumstances and his own giant head)
“until death parts us.”
She really only focused solely on the last line and not the entire red flag of a letter
Near and his radio-controlled rubber ducks (chapter 86)
[ID: Several Death Note colored manga panels of Near looking at a rubber duck in a kiddie pool, edited with a water-pattern background. In the first Near is just looking, in the second the duck is being powered by a remote, and in the third Near is stacking rubber ducks on top of each other.]
Go baby go splash water on wires and computers
can we go back to when mangaka were obsessed with led zeppelin

His hair has grown long, silver strands dangling way past his small back. She finds it fascinating how his locks had once felt soft and fluffy, now smooth and silky as they slipped through her fingers. Perhaps it’s been ingrained in her bones to always assume impermanence. So many people have exited her life, as she did theirs. And in the chaos of it, she forgot that Near was not just anyone.
forever biting things about near btw. What if you were 13 and got told the man whose identity you had to replace was already dead. what if that man didn’t even reach twice your age. What if you hated every second of it but there’s nothing else for you to do anyway. what if you have to do it alone. What if you have people surrounding you, people who you trust, who you never ever show that trust to because you don’t understand your emotions and you don’t want them anyway. What if the only other person who went through the exact same thing as you dies. what if he was only a year and a half older than you. what if you cant tell if it was a necessary sacrifice or if he just really wanted to die. What if you won despite and because of him. What if you didnt win, anything, at all, in any way. What if you were 27. What if you were wondering when it was your turn. What if you kept living.
