Brief overview of noun cases (Nominative, Vocative, Accusative, Genitive, Dative, Locative and Instrumental)

Detailed Overview

Declensions are classified by gender (masculine, feminine, neutral), number (singularity, duality and plural) and case (nominative, vocative, accusative, genitive, dative). Fundamentally, declensions indicates the role a word plays in a sentence.

Nominative indicates the subject, vocative is used to address people or things, accusative represents the object of the verb and comes after prepositions for destination of motion, genitive is used for possessives (the owner taking the case) and for the "from" proposition (the location taking the case), and finally Dative which expresses a person or thing who is/are directly or indirectly affected by the subject's actions. Dative is said the function as Locative ( expresses locations or time) and Instrumental (expresses the thing with which something is done).

The dative was said to function as locative and instrumental. This contradicts what I was previously taught. This being that the locative is a case of its own. Cannot say much for the instrumental case since its my first time hearing about it.
