Synopsis : Y/N hadn't planned on going to prom because she wasn't interested and had no one to go with. But when Yang Jungwon, the student council president, asks her to be his date with hesitant eyes and flushed cheeks, she can't refuse.
High school was a bit like hell on Earth. Between the jocks, the popular kids, the delinquents, and just those trying to blend into all that carnage, it wasn't for the weak. And when you survived it while managing to stay sane, it was a miracle.
Some would say you create your best memories in high school. WRONG! Y/N absolutely did not share that opinion when she became a pro at dodging the cheerleaders who loved to bother her, throw her books on the floor, or "accidentally" spill their milkshake on her.
Just because she didn't like people and preferred her own company didn't make her weird or a loser. As those girls liked to call her. Honestly, what they thought of her went over her head. She had better things to do than seek their approval.
And even when she was peacefully sitting alone at a table in the cafeteria, rereading the oral exam she had to take in ancient Greek, someone would come and bother her.
"That's pretty pathetic, staying all alone like that!" And here came the gaggle of hens. Great.
"You know prom is coming up soon, right? I bet no one asked you!"
"Are you kidding? Of course! Have you seen her? No one would want to be seen in public with her! I'd be so embarrassed if I were you!"
Y/N looked at them wearily, unable to understand how they could have so much energy to insult her but not to study. "Okay?" she said.
"Seriously, Y/N, you should think about getting plastic surgery, because with that face, you're going to end up an old maid with cats!"
"Even cats won't want her!" A wise man once said that ignorance is the best weapon. Y/N didn't know who he was, but he wasn't wrong. Even though hitting them would have greatly satisfied her.
"I'm sure you'll have a very good prom, girls," she assured, returning to her reading. "After all, you've spent the whole year, no, your whole lives preparing for this big event! The one that will decide who you'll be in the future and will certainly bring you great things! And while you've spent the year wondering which dress will make you look least like a sausage and which lip gloss will be glittery enough, I'll be graduating with honors and getting accepted into a great university with an excellent academic record. Then again, I understand you, of course being named prom queen is surely more important than having a future and not ending up unemployed and still living with your parents. No, no, I understand," Y/N said, waving a hand. "I'm the stupid one."
She gathered her things, then stood up, patting the captain's cheek with a smile. "There you go! Good luck with your dress hunting, and see you next year! Oh no, I'll be graduated, and you'll have failed your grade. Sorry, I forgot."
The young girl shrugged and swung her bag over her shoulder, leaving the cafeteria with a satisfied smile on her lips. A few snickers echoed in the cafeteria as the cheerleaders blushed with shame.
Y/N gave a good oral exam, which earned her an excellent grade in her elective. Before leaving school to go to her sports activity, she stopped by the library to return a book she had borrowed.
Around a corner, a body collided with her, and she almost stumbled if someone hadn't caught her by the arm. "I'm so sorry!"
Yang Jungwon stood before her. Student council president, son of the Yang Foundation, and a very popular member of the school's music group. He and his friends were among those who turned heads as soon as they entered a room. Y/N knew Jake since they were science partners, but she had never met the rest of the group.
"It's okay. Don't worry about it." She was about to walk around him when Jungwon stopped her.
"Y/N! Uh, I was wondering if by any chance you were going to prom?"
"I think so, yes."
"Great! And by any chance, do you already have a date? Because I… uh, I'd like to go with you." He scratched his neck, embarrassed, his entire face red, and Y/N hadn't found him as cute as at that moment. She smiled and nodded.
"I'd like to go with you."
"Really?! I mean, cool," he corrected himself, which made her laugh.
"Alright. I'll be wearing light blue, so make sure we match." Jungwon nodded with a big smile, stepping aside to let her pass. Y/N walked away, already thinking about what this end-of-year prom would be like.
Her mother was absolutely thrilled that she had decided to go to prom, and even with a date! They had spent long hours choosing the perfect dress until they found the rare gem.
The night of prom arrived, and Y/N got ready all afternoon with her mother's help. She would be lying if she said she wasn't nervous. It was her very first prom and even her first date with a boy she liked. Even though she and Jungwon had talked quite a bit via text since his invitation, she was still a little apprehensive about the evening.
Y/N looked at herself in her bedroom mirror, adding the final touches to her makeup and making sure her hairstyle held. The front door opened, and voices sounded from the living room. "Y/N, sweetie, your date is here!" her mother called.
She took a deep breath to gather her courage, grabbing her purse before going downstairs. She was careful not to trip on her dress on the stairs, arriving in the living room where her parents, as well as Jungwon and his parents, were.
"Oh, my love, you're beautiful!" her mother sniffled.
"Mom," she mumbled. "Stop it."
Y/N's gaze fell on Jungwon, who looked just as uncomfortable as she did. He was dressed in a gray suit and matching jacket, a light blue shirt, and his tie matched the color of her dress. He stepped toward her, showing a nervous smile.
"I'm so sorry, they insisted on coming," he murmured.
"Don't worry, my parents are worse."
"Okay, stop whispering sweet nothings and let's take a picture!" Jungwon's mother insisted.
"Mom!" her son protested, his cheeks crimson.
"Shh. I want a picture of you two, you look so beautiful, children!" The young girl linked her arm with Jungwon's, who continued to apologize as she smiled. Their fathers stood there enjoying the show while their mothers bombarded them with photos.
"Wow!" her brother exclaimed, coming down from his room. "Who are you, and what have you done to my ugly sister?"
"Shut up!" she retorted.
"Jisung, don't tease your sister on prom night! Aren't they beautiful?"
"Beautiful enough to make me sick." Their mother rolled her eyes, exasperated. "It's the big night! Yang, keep your hands in your pockets when you dance with my sister. No groping."
"MOM!" Y/N shouted, mortified.
"Jisung, go to your room!"
Her brother laughed loudly as he went back upstairs, Y/N fumed, thinking of a way to make him pay. They preferred to leave before things escalated, Jungwon driving to the school, where he parked in the lot.
Loud music was coming from the gymnasium, and Y/N sighed as she looked at it from afar. "I feel like I'm already going to hate it…"
"Hey, we don't have to go," Jungwon reassured her.
She smiled, grabbing his hand in hers. "Yes, we do. No way this damn dress is going to waste."
He chuckled, intertwining their fingers, and they headed toward the gymnasium. Many couples were also walking toward the prom hall, and Y/N almost turned back when she saw the two student photographers in charge of taking pictures at the entrance.
"Do you want to join the guys?"
"Let's go." His friends were sitting around a table with their girlfriends. At least she would have girls to talk to. Y/N gave a shy wave to the girls, who smiled at her.
"We were wondering when you were going to arrive," Sunghoon mocked. "Were you already making out in the car?"
"I take back what I said, I definitely hate this evening," she said to Jungwon.
"Sunghoon, shut up and let the poor girl breathe," his girlfriend said. "That's not how you make people feel comfortable."
"And then you wonder why no one wants to join your group," Jay's girlfriend added. "You're all weird."
"We're not weird," her boyfriend refuted.
The girls gave them weary looks, and they whistled innocently. Y/N smiled, reassured to see that the girls weren't as bad as the cheerleaders. In fact, she was having a great evening. Jungwon was always by her side and included her in conversations. And even if his friends were really chaotic, their girlfriends were adorable.
Y/N had moved away to refill her empty punch glass, ladling some colorful drink into her cup before turning around. She almost spilled her glass if she hadn't stopped when she saw the cheerleaders approaching. "Well, well! The loser finally showed up!"
"I don't see a date in sight, no one wanted to ask you? So sad!"
"So predictable. Who would want you?"
"Can't you even stop yourselves for one evening?" Y/N said. "I'm beginning to think you're fans of mine, always trying to talk to me."
"Fan of you! That's funny!"
"What's funny is that you don't even try to enjoy the prom, you'd rather look for trouble. I think you're the ones who are pathetic. You only feel satisfied when eyes are on you, no matter the situation. Where does this need for approval come from? You should see a therapist because it's getting serious."
"You little…"
"Everything okay?" Jungwon slipped to her side, wrapping an arm around her waist to pull her close. Y/N looked away from the cheerleaders to smile at him.
"Everything's fine, Won. We were just talking."
"Jungwon, what are you doing with her?!"
"Y/N is my date. Contrary to what you keep repeating, I'm lucky that a girl like Y/N accepted my invitation to prom. I'm even flattered to be seen in her company, knowing she's top of our class. As for your behavior, it's harassment, and it will be discussed at the student council meeting on Monday morning."
"No, we…"
"Have a good evening."
He pulled Y/N with him onto the dance floor, leaving the cheerleaders in shock. The young girl wrapped her arms around his neck, holding back the smile that threatened to stretch her lips. "That was hot," she said.
"Don't," he blushed.
"What? You've been shy since you asked me to prom, but I love seeing your authoritative student council president side." He grunted, letting his head fall onto her shoulder as she giggled.
They waltzed among the other couples to the rhythm of the music, finally enjoying some peace away from those horrible cheerleaders and his friends' chaos. "You know, I've liked you for a long time," Jungwon confessed. "Since freshman year."
"Really?"
"Yeah, but I never dared to approach you. I asked Jake hyung hundreds of times to give you my number since you're physics partners, but he never wanted to! He said 'I had to be a man and make the first move.'" She chuckled, shaking her head.
"Well, I'm glad you invited me to prom. I couldn't have dreamed of anything better."
"So, can I take you on a date, hoping you'll be my girlfriend?"
Y/N smiled, tilting her head toward him to place a tender kiss on his lips. Jungwon closed his eyes, his fingers gently digging into her hips as their lips moved in rhythm. "You can," she smiled, breaking the kiss.
"Great," he breathed, his cheeks red.
And Jungwon sighed as he saw the boys whistling and applauding from their table, wishing he could disappear as quickly as possible, while Y/N chuckled, resting her head against his shoulder.

MASTERLIST
Yang Jungwon was a professional for getting under people's skin. He was effortless with it, almost instinctive. One smirk, one comment, and suddenly you were exactly where he wanted you. He'd laugh sometimes, make fun of you when you fall for his bait.
Even when he became your boyfriend—and more so now that he was your husband—nothing changed. For years, you'd been his favorite target, though never without affection. He'd tease you endlessly, pretend not to know where your glasses were when you "lost" it (he hid them), and once even accidentally dropped your expensive cleanser into the toilet because he picked it up just to "check the ingredients."
But now, no one had it worse than his son, Yang Chenwon.
In the shallow stretch of the ocean, Jungwon stood with Chenwon clinging desperately to his father's trunks, sobbing.
"Take me back!" the toddler wailed, crying as he kept his iron grip on his father. Jungwon only laughed, dimples appearing as he tried to peel his son away.
Chenwon only wailed louder, calling for you as he pointed in your direction in the shore, trying to drag his father along.
"Okay, okay we'll go back," Jungwon laughed, finally relenting as he took his son's arm and guided him toward the land.
Once the toddler finally stumbled out of the water, he let go of his father and staggered back, wailing in pure betrayal. Jungwon dropped onto the sand, grinning as he watched his son.
"Chennie, you scared, baby?" you asked softly, crouching to his level. Your son nodded, sniffling and beginning to calm—until Jungwon scooped up a handful of sand and rubbed it onto his arm.
Chenwon shrieked instantly, flailing as the wet grains clung to his skin. Jungwon only laughed harder, dimples deepening as he watched.
"Appa, no more!" he wailed, swinging a tiny hand at his father's direction. Jungwon dodged easily, which only made the toddler cry harder in a failed attempt at revenge.
"Aye, real men love sand, Chennie-ah," Jungwon teased, reaching for him—but Chenwon stepped back, glaring. Then without mercy, Jungwon grabbed another handful of wet sand and smeared it on his son's bare leg.
Chenwon's scream rang louder this time, sharp enough that a few nearby people turned, confused, at the scene.
"Sweetheart, I think he's had enough." you murmured towards your husband as you watched at your wailing son in awe. He was a perfect copy of his father—same round face, same boba eyes, even the dimples. Your genes didn't stand a chance.
So even now, as he wails at full volume, you can't find it in yourself to be upset and silence him as more people are now starting to look. Because all you see is Jungwon in him—the same eyes, the same little expressions—and your chest warms at the familiarity. It doesn't replace the love you already have for your son, it just deepens it, layering something softer, something quietly fond, over everything you already feel.
Jungwon's grin softened as he wiped his sandy hands on his trunks and reached out. "Okay," he drawled gently. "Appa's sorry, Chennie. Come here—let's head back to the hotel."
Chenwon sniffled, looking at his father reluctantly, but desperate for comfort, he ran to Jungwon's open arms and wrapped his small arms around his father's neck.
Jungwon let out a small groan as he stood, smoothing his son's hair and pressed before pressing a soft kiss to his chubby cheek. Then he turned to you, hand outstretched.
You took it, and together, you started back toward the hotel.
"You know," you whispered, glancing at your now drowsy son resting on Jungwon's shoulder, "he's going to grow up rage-baiting people just like you."
