[ ℳ ] Morrigan had not played with the child. Instead, Morrigan kept the crystal large and bright. Like the child had wanted. Part of Morrigan’s power had even been used to create the large beast of fire.

            Thought she said nothing to begin with, Molly gave a gasp of realisation, looking over the other--who it seemed apparently was no ordinary girl--with an air of curiosity. Finally, hoping to confirm her suspicions, the child came to speak her thoughts aloud. “You’re one of the Unown, aren’t you?” Despite knowing she should be wary of the pokemon after last time, she couldn’t help but feel delighted over the familiarity.

With how she was smiling, the girl didn’t seem like she was lost, but her accent was far from Unovian as well which gave a little away to him that she wasn’t exactly from here. That was probably even more of a reason as of why he hadn’t seen her before, though she did seem to be fascinated by her surroundings. For now, he’d decide to play along in hope that she’d just tell him on her own. “You don’t say?” he said with a small chuckle. “Well then, why don’t you mind telling me where you are exactly if you’re so positive.”

            “Mhmm,” Molly answered gleefully with a nod of her head. “We’re in Aspertia City.” Taking on a cheeky air in her determination to be right, the young girl grinned widely up at the man, aware she was merely correct by a technicality. Even so, it was better for her to say something and be right than to say nothing at all. She just had to hope she wouldn’t get in too much trouble for wandering into somewhere she wasn’t supposed to be.

          “I’m Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town, and this is my partner, Pikachu!” Adrenaline was rushing through his veins, and it made him miss the faint recognition he felt in the corner of his mind. However, Ash had always been one-track-minded, especially towards POKéMON battles, so he focused more on his strategy for this gym. 

     Pikachu frowned slightly after he greeted the gym leader; there was something about her that seemed familiar, a familiar scent that he thought he had noticed years ago, but adrenaline rushed through him similarly to Ash, and he forgo’d his curiosity.

            Ash...? Molly repeated silently to herself, pale blue eyes growing wide with a momentary shock. No. It couldn’t be. Ash was a fairly common name, right? Besides, the boy who’d helped her so long ago was long gone. Gone long enough for her to grow from a small child to a young woman now in possession of her own gym. No, it couldn’t be him. Anyway, Molly had been so young at the time, perhaps she hadn’t even remembered the boy’s name correctly. But then, that pikachu... 

            Shaking the thoughts from her head, a grin returned to the woman’s features as she brought herself to speak again. “Well, Ash, you think you’re ready? We’ll each use three pokemon and the fist to run out of pokemon able to battle loses.”

Matt blinked slowly as he regarded the child in the light of this new piece of information. Finding out she was an orphan didn’t suddenly make him feel sympathetic in the slightest, but it was only natural that sharing something in common between them piqued his interest. Dressed prettily like that, and being as bold as she was, Matt would never have guessed she’d lost her parents.

Then again, the orphans he knew, himself included, were a far cry from normal, so what did he know?

“Huh.” Came the delayed response after a while. Matt took a long drag of his cigarette, took his time, then finally released the smoke from his lungs in a loud exhale. “Well, shit. You’re not here on your own though, right? You’re, what, four years old? Go run back to your caretaker or whatever.” He contemplated blowing smoke in her direction to make her leave faster but decided that even he wasn’t that much of an asshole. He was already going to hell, there was no need to add causing a little girl to have lung cancer in the future because of second-hand smoke to the list of reasons.

            Falling silent as Matt studied her quiet himself, Molly reatched to retrieve the tatted bear she’d dropped when the other’s game had perked her interest. Accustomed to being looked over and judged by adults--often perspective new parents--the girl held herself quiet and small as she’d been taught to do in such situations, toy clutched tightly in both hands. 

            However, as boisterous as the girl was, never could she keep up that facade for long. Frowning at his assumption, Molly came to rest her hands on her hips. “Nu uh,” she began, far louder than she was supposed to, “I’m seven.” As if to illustrate her point further, tucking the bear under her arm, she held up seven fingers, only dropping her hands as he continued. Her voice beginning to drawl, Molly pouted as she spoke. “But it’s so boring back there. Skylar doesn’t want me there anyway, that’s why he’s trying to get rid of me.”

            When alone, nothing happens. However, if there are two or more, an odd power is said to emerge. That was what they said about the unseen, ancient pokemon scattered around the Johto region--pokemon whose powers were able to bend the very fabric of reality. Prolonged exposure, some said, lead to insanity, an unraveling of the mind. Though, few thought the abandoned town of Greenfield was anything more than a urban legend. Only one small child remained with the knowledge of the truth. 

            Perched atop the ruins of a stone pillar, hands holding onto the edge on either side of her legs, Molly smile widely as a giggle slipped from between her lips. Just meters below, in the late evening, misty shadows materialised into sharp spikes, hanging immobile in the air for just a moment before plunging into the chest of someone who had been just too curious for their own good. 

            Having traveled far from her home after it quickly became a ghost town of crystal, scarcely returning to witness the destruction left in her wake, the girl returned to the home of her friends. Though close to civilisation, few were willing to enter into the Ruins of Alph, if only for the rumors of the cursed child haunting its halls. Few were foolish enough to battle with the remains of the ancient people and those who did, they didn’t live long enough to tell the story of young Molly Hale. 

            With the help of the Unown, the child slowly descended from her perch, a squeal of delight carrying through the darkness as red stained shoes poked at a slowly forming pool of blood. No longer was she the prim and proper child of high class society.

Alright, the post I just reblogged got me thinking about something I (and some other roleplayers) do that apparently isn’t as obvious as I previously assumed??

It’s this neat thing called free indirect thought (FIT). Now, direct thought (‘Shit, I’m going to be late,’ he thought.) and indirect thought (He thought he was going to be late.) are pretty easy concepts to grasp. In DT the character’s voice, words and thoughts are clearly their own and come across as such; in IT they’re filtered through the narrator (who in this case is the roleplayer). FIT is something in between, a piece of narration that steps away from the roleplayer and closer to the character’s voice. (Shit, he was going to be late.) See?

Let’s make an example that actually relates to the godmodding discussion in the post I mentioned earlier:

[My character] shifted the grocery basket in his arms, growing tired of waiting in the line that hadn’t moved in ages. [Your character] was taking forever paying for their groceries, much to [my character’s] displeasure.

I’ve bolded the words indicating FIT and italicized the stuff supporting it. At least, if this was an actual starter written by me, that’s how they’re supposed to be interpreted; I might've even used a more precise phrase like the last fifteen minutes. (Though I admit that would have been way less obvious.)

My character experiences things from his subjective point of view, and when I use FIT I become an unreliable narrator, at least to a point. Forever is obviously an exaggeration made by my character because he’s impatient; I’m not stating a fact. I’m not controlling your character and making them pay for their groceries slowly – whether they actually are slow or not is up to you.

Using FIT makes the writing much more dynamic in my opinion. I mean, ’[My character] felt like [your character] was taking forever paying…’. Yeah.

(I guess one could argue that I’m godmodding by placing both of our characters in a grocery store in the first place (provided we haven’t agreed on it earlier), but really?)

((I just, yeah. I need this here. I’ve spent the last 4 months being bombarded with free indirect discourse (or free indirect thought as jiivasu puts it) by almost ever major modernist writer. It’s pretty say to say it was one of the most prominent literary devices to come from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, meaning it holds immense influence over literate today and in turn the way so many of us write. It’s by no means necessary, but it is certainly a way of making writing much more dynamic and interesting for the writer and people reading it.

I didn’t learn about this until I started my English Literature degree, but I really do feel like it’s something more people need to be aware of. Chances are in any writing which is so heavily focalised on a particular character (as much rp is) it is highly unlikely your narrator will be 100% reliable and omniscient. Literary devices such as FID/FIT need to be taken into account before people start getting annoyed with each other.))

I suck, I know, I’m sorry. I had another presentation last week, then I’ve had 6 novels to read since then. I only have one and a half left though, so I’ll be free more after then. I’ll also be at LuckyCon all of tomorrow and saturday, so I won’t be doing anything then other than prancing around as Khoshekh and Cecil. Hopefully come next week I’ll finally get time to do some replies though. 

In other news, as of yesterday I’m officially a published writer. I worked on a children’s literature publication over the last few months and it got published online and at my uni yesterday. So my pieces on 150th years of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Blind Dates with Books are finally out there and geougoesug Apparently I’ve been judged as worthy enough to be published. ; u ;

350+ Followers?! 350+ Followers?! 350+ f o l l o w e r s?! Sorry, I’m just baffled at the amount of people interested in my blog. I remember when I started out and I got 150+! And despite my constant absence for long periods of time, you all stuck around and I really appreciate that.             Playing out in the fields, Molly was used to spending her time alone, and so she didn’t expect to be approached by anyone from the mansion--at least not this early in the afternoon--let alone someone unfamiliar. However, as the rose was presented to her, the child smiled brightly and door a deep whiff of its scent before glancing back up the girl and answering her question. “Hi, my name’s Molly!”

A huff heaved itself from the Pikachu’s mouth when the ordeal was over. Paws gripping tightly onto Red’s cap to ensure he wouldn’t fall off of his trainer’s shoulder. “If you have the time to spout apologizes, you should have worked harder on training with your Pokemon,” Red stated firmly, as Pikachu’s ears pressed themselves flat against the rodent’s head.  This lecturing habit wasn’t exactly terribly uncommon coming from his hostile master. “Pokemon themselves are not at fault for mistakes. Their trainers are. A Pokemon stuck with a unworthy trainer will only suffer.” With that he turned away from the girl. Feeling the weight of the rodent on his back shifting slightly, as the Pikachu held onto his trainer’s hat with one paw, and waved with the girl, attempting to be a bit more civil than his trainer.

            In part, Molly was surprised to hear when her scolding continued; slowly her feeble and guilt filled expression transformed itself into a frown laced with annoyance and almost shock. Sure, the girl knew she was still far from the best trainer around, she was used to making plenty of mistakes, but surely the man before her had no president to judge her, a beginning trainer, for such downfalls. Holding the Vulpix closer to her chest, Molly’s features tightened as she dared herself to speak in retaliation. “I-I’m not unworthy!” Where she was going with her words the child did not know, but she had to say something.
