Our final full day in San Diego! We spent the day in the restore pricing items, building cabinets and moving furniture! We can officially call ourselves cabinet-making pros after this week!! We then took a trip to the California Mission started by St. Junipero Serra! It was breathtaking. We even stayed to celebrate mass and took a look at their museum! We then stopped by Little Italy to have pasta and gelato, it was a great last dinner in San Diego! We’re excited for the short time we have left tomorrow!

Bryan, TX Day 7!

Howdy, y’all! We had a wonderful last day on the worksite. We began painting the interior of a third house today. After painting all morning, the crew gave us the rest of the day off because of how much work we finished over the first three workdays! We went to Lake Bryan and took naps and relaxed by the water. Following the lake, we went to Aggieland Outfitters to snag some Aggie gear and take a picture with the giant “Gig ‘Em” Statue. Then, we went home and cooked dinner. We ended our day with an ice cream sundae party and reflection. We are so happy to have been in Bryan this past week, and we cannot wait to be home with our families soon!

Last Day in Athens, Georgia

Today was our last day on the worksite! We finished up our walkway project, completed our drainage trench around the perimeter of the house, and even got to work on top of the roof repairing ridge gaps. We soaked in all the southern hospitality we could and truly enjoyed working alongside each other as a team one last time. We returned back to the church we had attended mass at this past Sunday for dinner provided by their Deacon, who also was a CUA alum! Afterward, we went on a very interesting ghost tour of Athens and finished the night with reflection and paper plate awards. Athens, Georgia has been quite the adventure for this group and the end to this trip is definitely bittersweet. Until next year! Peace out Habitat Spring Break 2020 :)

Winston Salem, NC :) Day 6

We had an awesome last day here in Winston-Salem! Although it was bittersweet, we had a great day on the worksite. We worked throughout a good majority of the day on finishing the siding of the house that we were at yesterday. In the second half of the day, we split off into two groups, one staying at the house while the other group going to work on the foundation for a new house. After the worksite, we spent the afternoon relaxing and playing games at the lodge. For dinner, we had our very own Pizza Party! We ended the day off with an awesome reflection Paper Plate awards. We are so thankful for the time that we’ve spent in Winston-Salem and can’t wait for future opportunities with Habitat! :)

San Diego continues to surprise us! Today we started the day at the worksite, but got rained out about halfway through and moved to the restore. We got to paint playhouses and saved the crew about a month’s worth of work which was amazing! We took a surprise trip to the Pier on Ocean Beach and then to Mount Soledad where we overlooked the city! It was really a great day!

Athens, Georgia Day 6!!

We had an amazing day on the worksite today! Our whole team got to help lay concrete down for the walkway we had paved the previous days. Being able to see the formation of the walkway from start to finish was incredible. After the worksite, we had a quick homecooked meal and made our way to the trampoline park for an hour of jumping! We played dodgeball, climbed through obstacle courses, and had a blast jumping around together. We all agreed that this was one of the most fun things we did this whole week together. We ended the night with a spontaneous dance party in the parking lot of the Church and, of course, with reflection. We are all feeling pretty bittersweet about our last day on the worksite tomorrow. Stay tuned to see what we accomplish!

Bryan, TX Day 6!

Today we had an awesome day working on the siding of a house. We also spent time playing with the staff’s dogs and children in between putting up panels of siding. After the worksite, the affiliate provided us dinner, and we enjoyed sharing a meal with them and learning about their stories and their love for Habitat. We ended our day in reflection with a little bit of free time for playing games and hanging out with one another. We are STOKED for our last work day!

Winston-Salem, NC :) Day 6

We had a great 6th day here in Winston-Salem! We started off the day by working on walls that’ll be put up on the site that we worked at on Monday! There were about four large tables with wooden panels and plywood that we used in order to create them. As soon as they were measured, adjusted, and fully made, we loaded them into the truck. After lunch, we went to the house that we were in yesterday and finished the siding of it. Afterward, we visited the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston Salem, where we were able to see some really cool art exhibits. After our museum visit, we took a little excursion of downtown Winston-Salem and had free time. During this time, we took in the sites of the city and were able to buy some merch and get some really delicious smoothies. When we returned, we had dinner, played a very intense game of kick-ball, mixed with the rules of cricket, and had reflection after. We’re sad that tomorrow will be our last full day on the worksite :(, but also are excited to see what we’ll be working on next!

Another wonderful day is sunny San Diego! Back on the work site today putting up insulation, mopping and many many more activities! We took a lunch break at a nearby taco shop and got back to work on the scaffolding and even got to walk on top of the roof. Our surprise activity for the day was going to Belmont Park, where we rock climbed, played laser tag and watched the sunset! Even our usually YMCA visit was a blast- we watched a game of inter-mural soccer! We ended the night with sloppy-joes and then reflection with a San Diego local!

Colorado Team! We had an awesome day on the worksite! We continued to build the second floor of two houses and started to make window boxes and walls! We can’t believe how much progress we made in two days! The weather was absolutely beautiful today and we even got sunburnt even though it was around 40 degrees outside! After a long day on the worksite, we headed to Vail (a cute ski village that looks like Christmas!) We shopped, sang Christmas carols and ate milkshakes and sundaes. We came back and played all sorts of games! A great day!

Athens, Georgia Day 5!!

Today was our off day from the worksite! Brad our affiliate gave us a tour of the properties in Athens that Habitat has built or is currently working on. Afterward, we went to the Georgia Museum of Art on UGA’s campus and then made our way to a UGA merchandise shop to purchase some souvenirs. After having a chill evening in, we made our way to Cali-N-Tito’s for Mexican food and ended the night with reflection and card games. Can’t wait to be back on the worksite tomorrow!

Bryan, TX Day 5!

Day 5 in Texas was a great day! A group of us shingled the roof of the house we were working on while another group cut corner pieces and passed them up to us on the roof. After the worksite, we cooked dinner and then went out to eat rolled ice cream. We ended our night by visiting the Texas A&M Bonfire Memorial. We were humbled to learn about the Aggies who lost their lives in the 1999 bonfire, while also amazed by the intentionality of the memorial. We ended our night in reflection and then went to bed as quickly as we could because we are exhausted from a long day in the sun! We are excited to put up the siding of the house tomorrow!

Winston-Salem, NC :)

NC here! Today marked our 5th day in Winston-Salem, North Carolina! We woke up this morning, got ready for the day, and took a group photo on the front stairs of the lodge. Then, we proceeded to take Big Tuna and the Millennium Falcon (the names of our vans) to our new worksite for the day. A few minutes and one Lizzo song later, we arrived.

This home’s framework had already been erected. Our tasks included installing siding, cutting corners (not slacking off, but a pseudo-technical term), measuring shims for installing windows, fitting windows and doors in place, and various other duties as assigned. When lunchtime rolled around, we hopped back in the vans and returned to the lodge. Our lunch today was Subway and one of the Habitat employees we affectionately call “Davis” joined us. After lunch, we returned to the morning’s worksite and eight of us helped out with some insulation prep work on a home down the street. (We suspect that we were assisting with correcting some prior group’s work, but that was kind of a neat look into the process that was not expected.)

When work concluded later in the afternoon, we were surprised to head straight out on an excursion. We made a stop at a trendy cafe. Most of us had worked up such an appetite that our snacks did not make it out the door. We drove a few minutes away to the Arts Walk in downtown Winston-Salem. Not exactly the National Gallery’s Sculpture Garden, we were able to touch, climb, and play frisbee and volleyball in the middle of these very large, red sculptures. We had a great time enjoying each other’s company and camaraderie at the Arts Walk.

Returning to the lodge, dinner was a welcome sight. One of the families made chili for the meal tonight. We enjoyed the meal and then joined together for our daily reflection. The theme of the reflection was relating the differences between a house and a home. We dove deep into this reflection with many experiences shared. The end of the day at last, several individuals could be found crafting their “warm-and-fuzzies” (messages of affirmation to be shared before the end of the week on little strips of paper), reminiscing about elements of the day, and getting ready for tomorrow’s early wake-up.

We are having a great time and looking forward to the next couple of days. That’s all for now, but stay tuned!

Today we were split up between 3 restores in San Diego! Collectively, we priced items, build lots of cabinets and some demolition! It was a great times, but we really enjoyed being back together to chat about the days we had and get some JOJO’s Icecream!! This little shop is the only one-started by a mother and daughter! The icecream was delicious! Afterwards we got to share our individual Habitat stories with some locals at St. James/ St. Leo’s Parish. It was great to also hear the stories of elder locals who had done Habitat throughout their lives as well!! Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Colorado Day 4!!! We had a great day on the worksite! We worked on the outside walls of two different houses! We built and raised about 10 walls that we insulated (they are LEED so good for the environment and the homeowner!) We got to work with our amazing construction site crews and future homeowners who told us about their journey to Habitat! The houses we worked on were donated by Gpysm County Schools to provide homes for their low-income families. We learned a lot today about construction, poverty in CO and affordable housing! We finished the day with Taco Night, ice cream in Glenwood Springs and a great reflection! Excited to see how we can serve and learn tomorrow!

Bryan, TX Day 4!

Today was our first day on the worksite, and it was a great time! We put up OSB boards, finished the trellises, and wrapped the house. We had the opportunity to work with the homeowner and meet her kids! After the worksite, we ate dinner outside and enjoyed the beautiful Texas weather. We then played a game of laser tag and went mini-golfing. We are looking forward to building at a new house tomorrow, and cannot wait to try new things and see what adventures are in store tomorrow!

Winston Salem, NC :)

Today was an awesome day on the worksite! We split up into two groups: one went to work on trimming for a house and another went to work on the finishing touches for a house.

At the almost-finished house, students cleaned the windows and floors and planted rose bushes and plants along the driveway. They planted grass seed and fertilizer and placed bails and bails of hay on the entire yard. They worked hard but they had so much fun!

At the other site, students measured, cut, and put into place the trimmings for the inside of the house. It was a lot of fun, as many people had the chance to use a nail gun, which is very fun to use :) We also swept the floors and worked on the entrance to the attic.

In the afternoon, we went to a Chocolate Factory and sampled some really delicious chocolate and took a self-guided tour! We then walked in downtown Winston-Salem and arrived at a general store which sells some really cool merch. We then arrived back at the lodge where we had dinner, reflection, and a movie/game night to end the night off!

We’re very much looking forward to what the rest of the week as in store!
