we should retire the word "relate" and replace it with "connect" when it comes to the relationship between audience member and fictional character. a character being relatable implies some of their personality and/or experiences match yours. a character being connect-able means audiences will find a way to understand and feel for their struggles (internal or external) even when they haven't experienced them themselves. this is especially relevant when it comes to marginalized characters. a character not being relatable to some audience members does not mean they can't be connect-able and the laser focus on relatability as a selling point for a character will only make it so stories with protagonists who are not white/cishet/western/etc will get less visibility because audiences assume that if they can't relate to them then they won't be able to care and root for them.
Okay so I made a list of 30 (well, 29 actually) prompts I am releasing into the wild. The point of this is that at least one of the participants are not having a good time.

I really think we should stop saying "kid-friendly" and start saying "ad-friendly". We shouldn't indulge these companies and their excuses anymore. I also think that continuing to pretend that this is about "protecting the children" pushes a lot of the blame onto kids and teens, who don't have the political power to push through any of this censorship legislature. Corporations and governments are to blame.
I know we make jokes about the proverbial asexual pervert who has written hundreds of thousands of words of smut on ao3, but also shoutout to the aces who aren’t perverts. to the aces who skip the sex scenes and wince at sex jokes and awkwardly leave the conversation when your friends start talking about sex. your boundaries aren’t childish and fuck anyone who says otherwise.
I think it's fine and fun to discuss s3's mischaracterizarions or bad plot OR if you feel completely the opposite and loved those aspects of it, because all of those are just petty fandom things and ultimately dont matter. Whatever, we move on.
But the race stuff is seriously so egregious. Whether it's intentional or ignorant, it shouldnt have happened. It shouldn't have happened on a good tv show and it shouldnt have happened on a trashy tv show. And ultimately that's the most important discussion happening around the finale. Armand being a cartoon villain sucks but Armand being a vessel through which to do antiblack violence while white characters are exempt from the conversation, literally not even in the room, is all I can think about.
It's difficult for me to see people saying "yes I agree the racial optics could have been handled better, but..." and then discuss the plot and the characters seperate from that. I feel like we all just saw a car crash and some people want to talk about how at least the weather is nice. It isn't illegal and I'm not angry AT YOU I just feel. Like. Idk when I think about TVL now that's all I am thinking about. I'm not getting that taste out of my mouth any time soon.
