Mike Brodie was 17 years old when he first started hopping freights in 2003. Since then, over the course of several years, the photographer traveled 50,000 miles across the US by any means available—walking, hitchhiking, and train-hopping. His iconic series A Period of Juvenile Prosperity documents the gritty, nomadic lifestyle of vagabonds, hobos, and Brodie’s fellow train-hoppers as they led lives as sordid as they were liberating.

"Hospice care" is such a sterile phrase, isn't it? My grandmother on my mom's side for some reason chooses to wear light blue pajama gowns like she is sick or dying. The taste of cough syrup does the same thing to my tongue that wine does, but one or two tablespoons of cough syrup is enough of a bad taste to make me nauseated, like the back of your slippers dragging on the hardwood. I didn't mind the feeling of my throat being swapped even though I gagged. I can't help that. I tell you the water tastes like a bathtub even though I have never tried the bathtub. There was no tabbouleh on the menu. I wish your brother would have tried some more of the assorted appetizers, and he kind of reminds me of my brother in that way. I cross my legs with a lot of tension as if it's going to keep me from doing something stupid, like putting her hand in a sandwich and whispering, "I'm sorry."
