Beatrix Potter

Writer, illustrator, conservationist, natural scientist

For the inaugural Arcade Feature, I'm excited to tell you about Beatrix Potter. Most people (including me) know her best for her picture books-

-which have sold over 250 million copies since they were published in the early 1900s.

Fun fact: In 1903, Peter Rabbit was the first fictional character to be made into a patented stuffed toy, making him the oldest licensed character.

But what really caught my attention is the work she was doing before Peter Rabbit came along.

Beatrix Potter had a scientific eye for detail, and was able to faithfully depict the world around her. In particular, she was interested in mycology.

In 1897, she put forward a paper to the Linnean Society in London... but as a woman was not allowed to be a member of the society nor attend the meeting when her paper was read. When the society's members did not pay much attention to her work, and fearing her samples to be contaminated, Potter withdrew her paper, which became lost. Only after Potter left hundreds of mycological artworks to a museum in the Lake District, UK, on her death in 1943, were her scientific talents recognized... Potter's precise and beautiful paintings and drawings of fungi are now helping modern mycologists in their efforts to identify species.*

Potter eventually moved away from books in favor of land management and farming. She was a prize-winning sheep breeder and a prosperous farmer, and bought several farms surrounding her own to preserve the unique hill country landscape. Much of that land now constitutes the Lake District National Park.

I have been really enjoying this season of Star Trek Discovery and I am excited for the​ finale tonight! My absolute favourite character is Sylvia Tilly, who is brought to life beautifully by the radiant Mary Wiseman. This character captured my heart the moment she burst on screen the very first episode, and I think she is such an important character in the world of Sci-Fi.

Underrated reason why the DS9 episode "The Wire" is great: It mentions mycorrhizal fungi during a brief conversation between Bashir and Dax about her sick plant, before they talk about Garak. Bashir even says that the fungus is essential to the plant's health and that it helps it to retain water - access to water is indeed one of the main benefits mycorrhiza provide to plants. This mention is especially cool because it was long before mycorrhiza became a widely popular concept.

The context of this scene is a bit messy and (intentionally) awkward, but I love that Paul says so clearly that being gay feels central to his personal identity. He could have shot down Mirror Georgiou's provocations in a number of other ways.

Homophobia is a thing of the past in Star Trek. But that doesn't necessarily mean society has to "grow past labels" in the sense that nobody uses them or finds them meaningful any more. Though there would most likely be some conceptual shifts.

I find what Paul says about "any universe [he] can possibly imagine" very relatable. Intellectually, I can of course conceive of possible worlds across which features such as sexual orientation vary. But practically and emotionally, I can't really imagine myself as anything but lesbian in a way that this alternate version still feels like me. (Maybe as asexual, but even that is a big stretch.)

Just showing people in queer relationships, who they're attracted to, etc. without "labeling" them is also a good approach to representation. But it's not the only one that makes sense for science fiction.

Not everyone attaches the same significance to their sexual orientation, and they don't have to. But it feels good to see this represented too, especially in utopian science fiction.
