I made this illustration to re-imagine the Greek Myth of Daphne and Apollo.
Here, Daphne has transformed into a laurel tree and lured Apollo to her, impaling him upon her branches once he is close enough, so that his body may feed the forest.

“Our Lady of New Frontiers, Nichelle Nichols”
My last painting of 2022, and I wanted it to be a painting carrying me into the new year, a tribute to an amazing and inspirational woman.
Star Trek has been a show I have watched since I was a wee one. I started with TNG as a child, but when I finally watched TOS in college, its impact was undeniable, both today and especially during the time it aired.
Although the famous speech says “final frontier”, Nichelle Nichols was a woman leading the way onto new frontiers, a beacon of hope, resilience and possibility. So that is what I wish to carry with me into the new year.

Apparently, I am still not over "The English" so I did another study of Eli. 8 hours on Procreate, quite happy with the progress I am making with my portrait work on the iPad.
I'm making up some more process/step-by-step posts for some of these studies to share. I am thinking also of getting my patreon/ko-fi properly set up to have more in-depth posts about my process, if folks would be interested in such a thing.

Did these 2 studies of horses from photos, 40 minutes each, entirely digital on Procreate.
So buying a magnetic paper-like screen protector has been a big game changer for me for my art output, for now I can draw on the iPad and it feels just like drawing traditionally. It's also allowing me to try different "traditional-like" techniques since I can do all the pencil/line-work digitally, and fast.

One of my favourite movies is Addam's Family Values, with the iconic Joan Cusack as Debbie Jelinsky. I just love everything about this villain, and often quote her speech at the end about wanting a Ballerina Barbie for Christmas.
