First I'd gush for a few minutes.

Then I'd ask some questions. Like is my theory about Petra's birthday correct, or what other literature influenced or are referenced beyond the obvious. I'm sure I'd come up with a list beforehand.

What are your thoughts about the epilogue? Specifically this sentence :

It took five, ten, fifteen years for me to agree. But Peeta wanted them so badly.

How do you interpret it?

I interpret this as Katniss still being too terrified of losing her babies to admit she wants them (badly). If she doesn't admit that they're wanted, in her mind, it won't hurt as much when they taken. That's her fear when she's pregnant, the potential loss.

What would have happened if

1. Katniss didn't volunteer for Prim, so Prim and Peeta compete in 74th Games.

2. Gale and Katniss compete.

3. Katniss and Peeta's brother compete. Before, he volunteered for Peeta.

A.What strategy would Haymitch made for District 12?

B.What would Katniss do to them? Would she become an ally with those 2 boys?

A. No idea since the star crossed lovers thing was Peeta's idea.

B. She might become ally with them, more likely Gale than Peeta's brother, but I think most likely Gale would die in the blood bath, potentially Katniss too, because she almost ran for the bow but Peeta distracted her.

there’s the obvious irony in a previous «independence day» becoming a totalitarian, violent form of control over a failed uprising.

but then there’s also the propaganda that lies within that. the message that they’re not strong enough to revolt, and now their children bear the burden of that loss.

cut off the districts from each other. feign 13’s obliteration. pit their children against each other. make them forget who the real enemy is, and while you’re at it, remind them they won’t succeed in rebelling even if they do. keep them starving and submissive, make them feel small and separated, and they’ll behave as such.

i don’t think the 74th games was rigged in the sense that snow intended to single out prim bc she’s covey or anything like that, but i do reckon they rigged it to pull a couple of 12 y/o girls for entertainment’s sake as a way of keeping up the "circuses" part of controlling the districts.

it’s brutal to say, but i do think plutarch could’ve been behind that aspect. he’d prob sell it to his fellow gamemakers as giving the audience an underdog friendship to root for, whilst in reality planning to use their deaths as a very clear display of the capitol’s cruelty.

when it’s the older teens, they can kind of spin them as young adults (or at least try to), which makes it the slightest bit easier to digest, but the 12 y/o kids? not a chance. it’s very much an in-your-face message telling the audience to look at what they’re doing to their children. there’s no honour in murdering kids.

also bc the revolution didn’t just come together overnight bc katniss held out some berries. it was the culmination of years of behind-the-scenes work, and it’s likely they had heaps of plans that tried and failed, and i think this very well might’ve been one of them, even if it was only to send a message.

Yes! July 4th was the day the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, which, in the little original world building we have, the 13 districts are based on the 13 colonies.

External historic reference aside, I like to head canon that's the day the treaty of treason was adopted, their version of a "constitution".

Do you think Reaping of 74th Hunger Games is rigged? Yes/No? Why?

No. If it is rigged, these books lose the horror of random violence. I believe the reaping is based on the drafting system used in the Vietnam War, per Collins's experience with that time period. Drafts are horrific partially because you don't know if you're going to be called upon. There would be no reason for them to reap Prim, nor Thresh, nor Rue, Foxface, Cato, Clove, etc. The violence comes from the unpredictability. They're even trying to predict it ahead of time by calculating slip totals. But it doesn't end up meaning anything. They're powerless, more powerless.

It wasn't, but if it was, I can see people dividing into two theories:

Snow, to get back at Haymitch.

Plutarch, to give Katniss a way to become the Mockingjay.

I hate both of these theories so much.

Yes I do! and I think it's a really nice little detail that it is. It's a really good way of showing how history shifts and changes. I have this idea that the day of independence hasn't happened for a long time before even the war that started the hunger games, because we have no idea how long the country has been Panem and not the US. but I think the date would stay significant in cultural history and perhaps prior to the war there was still some kind of celebration on that day, even if not specifically about the day of independence.

There's also brilliant irony in the fact that it's taken a day of independence and twisted it around to be a reminder that they are very much are not independent and free.

I absolutely don't think the reaping was rigged. If Snow was going to rig the reapings specifically for girls from the Covey then Maude Ivory and Lenore Dove would have surely gone in the games. I mean tbf, Maude Ivory very well could have, but given that she's likely Lenore Dove or Burdock's mother, I don't think she did. Strangely, Snow seems fine with leaving well enough alone and festering about his situationship for years to come. He only brings up the Covey to haymitch as a way as taunting and threatening him, and he only kills Lenore Dove to punish Haymitch.

There are the obvious glaring potholes between the original trilogy and the two prequels, but I'm sure I read an interview somewhere where Suzanne Collins said that she already knew about Lucy Gray and the Covey when writing the og trilogy, they just weren't as fleshed out. I personally find that there's enough implication in the trilogy that she always knew Katniss was related to them.

Snow doesn't really have any reason to rig the reaping for the 74th Hunger Games either. Katniss keeps to herself, it's not even like she's like Lenore Dove who finds opportunities to rebel wherever she can, he has absolutely no reason to punish Katniss, her mother or Prim. It's just unfortunate Prim got reaped.

I would say Snow never brings up the Covey to taunt Katniss after the games because she clearly doesn't know about them, all she knows is the songs. Snow might have done a full background research on her and found out who she's related to and that causes him to come down harder on her. But even so, why would he tell her she's related to them when she obviously doesn't know, I mean even the naming traditions have been left out by the time we get to her father, and probably forgotten by the time we get to Katniss, also I think if he told her about the Covey and that she was related to them it would only piss her off more.

I'd say if anyone was going to be taunted by the Katniss- Covey info, it'd be Haymitch (which yes I deffo want a fic on that now)

I headcanoned the Reaping to be on July 4 so many years before Ballad just because I thought it would be spooky. Getting that in canon and so explicitly stated in Ballad, then doubled down on in Sunrise, had its pros and cons. I think it is likely that certain significant dates would continue to have value to the society of Panem, even hundreds of years after the USA, depending on how things went down, and the cataclysm that led to the dissolution of the nations we know and the rise of Panem. How they went from the USA's Independence Day to the day beginning an annual spectacle weaponizing the District's lack of independence is interesting. It makes me wonder if that date was a different holiday in pre-DD Panem. I find it significant in the questions it raises and the opportunities for speculation, but I don't think it adds significantly to the social commentary.

No. The point is that it was random. We are all living in a field of random events dotted with intentional choices. Anyone, even if their name is only in the ball once, can be Reaped because in a system like that, no one is safe. It was that particular randomness that put Katniss in her position.

Some Reapings might be rigged, like what happened to Lucy Gray. I think who is involved depends on the reason for the rigging, and I don't think it's common.
