someone probably already posted about it but I just reread the cafeteria scene with peeta in Mockingjay in which he's acting really weird (mind you his hands were all twitchy and stuff)

and gale and katniss are talking afterwards and the scene goes:

"I told you he hated me," I say.

and when I read that I just did the biggest eyebrow raise because what????? you hated her that much?? during her DEATH GAMES?? peeta tried to straight up murder her and was being actively cruel and hurtful during the cafeteria scene and you're saying you hated her on the same level because she kissed him and not you??? oh my god- like dude maybe I could understand if he doesn't know about peeta calling her a mutt and ridiculing her appearance and stuff but gale KNOWS he tried to kill her and he's still comparing that level of terror/hatred to how he felt seeing her kiss him. dude PLEASE get a grip what kind of comparison is that

I’m a certified Gale hater because that boy was genuinely such a terrible friend to Katniss in Catching Fire and Mockingjay but I will give him ONE thing: the emotional awareness during those kiss scenes.

Like Gale realizing that Katniss tends to reach for physical closeness when she’s scared, overwhelmed, grieving, or trying to comfort him was actually such a refreshing moment for him. But if he did not stop Katniss, do you think things would have been physical between them? Will Katniss actually go through with it?

You’re giving him more credit than I will anon. I do not think Gale realizes she’s scared/overwhelmed/grieving. I can’t think of any time she feels that way and he noticed or reacts with anything resembling comfort for her. He knows that she only kisses him when he’s in pain and there is that one time in 2 when he realizes she’s disoriented but I don’t think even then he’s comprehending what she’s feeling. He just notices that she isn’t focused on HIM. He asks her to look at him and then kiss him again, to focus her attention on himself and when that doesn’t work he gives up. She’s disassociating, suicidal, and miserable and all he says is she seems drunk.

I do not think Katniss would’ve slept with Gale. She’s never done that before or even come close. It’s a very vulnerable thing and I don’t think she felt safe or comfortable enough in that situation or with that boy. She was giving him those “drunk” kisses because she felt like she owed him (“to make up for all the kisses I withheld”) and to try and feel something. She’s planning her own death in her head while they make out. If clothes started coming off I think the disoriented numbness would’ve turned to panic real quick.
