“Neostygarctus lovedeluxe”: The real-life animal named after “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure”

You know about tardigrades, a.k.a. “water bears,” right? These microscopic cuties, which some people even keep as pets:

In 2013, a previously-unrecorded species of tardigrade was found near the Miyako Islands in Japan, and was given the name “Neostygarctus lovedeluxe.”

The scientists who discovered the species explained the name as follows:

The specific epithet, lovedeluxe, refers to ‘Love Deluxe’, the name of a supernatural power enabling one to have complete control over one’s hair, which appeared in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond Is Unbreakable, a famous Japanese manga written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki. The hairy appearance of the new species appears as if affected by the power of ‘Love Deluxe’  (Fujimoto & Miyazaki, 2013, p. 415).
