You and Liam met at the after party of the premiere, the two of you finding each other in a quiet spot at the party and you just decide to stick together for the night
The afterparty was in full swing and the room was packed. He was quite certain that the entire population of New York had descended on radio city. It was a miracle that he'd managed to get anywhere near the drinks table but when he turned back with a glass of...something in his hand, bent on continuing the conversation he was having with someone who was likely famous but incredibly unknown to him, he found that the crowd had closed in and he couldn't take more than two steps.
It took longer than he'd like to admit to even make it back to the spot he initially came from only to find the person he was in the middle of a conversation with had wandered off somewhere else. Great. He wasn't about to go looking for him, he wasn't actually fully sure who he was so it wasn't that important. He did, however, need to get the hell out of this crowd and fast.
Eventually, he managed to pull himself up the stairs and through a door labelled 'rooftop terrace.' There were two or three other people up there when he got there but none of them made any moves to talk to him or approach him, just flashed awkward polite smiles and went back to what they were doing.
"Warm in there?" A voice joined him as he was looking out over the city from the balcony. He looked vaguely like someone he should recognise but again, didn't.
"Yeah it's crazy in there man," Y/N said, "barely escaped with my life,"
"What did you think?" the man asked, what sounded like an Australian or New Zealand accent colouring his words. He leaned his back against the railing, "of the film?"
"It was good! my first premiere so, I'm a little biased. I liked the bit with my song in it?" the singer laughed.
"Oh you wrote the music? did you do the one where it was like-" the man, enthusiastically plucked the strings of a fake guitar, making various "BAM" and "BA BA" sounds.
"Something like that! And you..." Y/N trails off hoping the man would introduce himself.
"Oh I ..did nothing ...I'm one of the drivers" he held out his hand, "Liam."
"OH! right yeah of course! The real star of the show" Y/N shook the outstretched hand, "I'm Y/N L/N,"
You woke up the following morning the slightest bit worse for ware, your head pounding and the light the was coming in from the windows hurting your eyes.
Y/N's head was pounding by the time he woke up in his Central Park hotel, light streamed in through the window and he could hear vague chattering from the people next door.
'I am never drinking again,' was the conclusion he came to as he managed to drag himself to the bathroom. Shockingly, he didn't actually look that bad, not as bad as he felt at least. With a few washes of his face and a thorough teeth brushing, he could pretty much pass as a functioning human.
At some point after he'd flung himself back into bed and started scrolling, he'd managed to fall back asleep. It was the buzzing of his phone that woke him up about an hour later with a text from a foreign number that he didn't recognise.
You two wander around New York to kill time thankfully without being recognised. You see all the landmarks, eat street food and take silly pictures, getting to know each other without having to yell over the blaring music of an after party DJ. It's awkward at first but eventually you manage to get into the swings of conversations about your lives and your experiences in between having to cling onto each others jacket sleeves to not lose each other in a crowd.
He ended up listening to all of your music on the flight home, mentally ranking them and even adding them all to his playlists (but he'd never admit that.) I imagine he saved a few to remember to try and learn them on guitar later.
It's long distance that really cemented the feelings the two of you had for each other. It started with frequent texting, updating each other about activities, meme sharing and silly little good morning texts and it quickly turned into short update calls which then turned into multi hour long face times or gaming sessions.
You ended up calling him and he jokingly said that you should come to New Zealand for a concert. You took that a little bit more seriously than he expected, especially if it was a chance to see him.

You spent summer break with him in New Zealand. He took you through local landmarks, he'd take you to Lake Taupo, his favourite eateries and places he loved as a child, recounting childhood karting and family stories. The two of you weren't officially together so you were sort of dancing around the ideas of physical affection and intimacy. You'd blush like school boys when your hands brushed and everyday you'd see that look in each others eyes, the look that asked 'what are we?'
I imagine he talks a lot. He trusts you so he's more likely to just say whatever he's thinking around you whether that's telling you about the new lighting mcQueen shirt he found, the fascinating thing that happened to him on this beach when he was a kid, his feelings about the F1 season, anything to fill the silences as you walked down streets or at sat cafe tables. Sometimes he'd catch himself rambling and apologise even if he can't help but blush at the way you looked at him when you were listening.
Your first kiss happened in New Zealand. It was possibly when you two were tucked up in his apartment watching films or maybe when the two of you were out sailing somewhere, somewhere the two of you felt safe anyway, away from the prying eyes of anyone's cameras. It wasn't particularly passionate or like something you'd see in a film but it was perfect, awkward in that 'fumbling new love' sort of way that left both of you blushing and Liam grinning so much his face hurt.

Leaving New Zealand was hard. You'd finally been able to bring your new found feelings into the physical world and now you had to go right back to only talking through a screen, hours apart in time zone. Liam would possibly shed a few tears in the car dropping you off but by the time he's hugging you goodbye he's composed himself, he doesn't want to make you sad or make it any harder for you to walk off. (and he could do with pictures of him crying in an airport NOT going viral on social media)
The two of you called constantly. Because of time zones, you'd often call late at night for one of you or while doing drastically random things like running errands, cooking dinner etc. You'd both try to keep moral up, laughing, telling each other stories etc but it doesn't take long for one or both of you to talk about missing each other. It's not rare to see him come on call wearing your clothes, buried in your hoodies, or holding something that reminds him of you like a letter or random thing you'd left behind. You'd talk at length about planning the next time you could meet and most importantly, when you were coming to one of his races.
I imagine he'll sometimes just play your songs in the background of a call or record himself blasting it in the car to send to you cause he knows it flusters you (and sometimes he listens to your songs cause he misses your voice)
The first time you got chance you were right there at one of his races. He'd spent hours explaining the rules and schedules to you on call and on planes and in taxis so you felt pretty confident. That race was so stressful for him, he really really wanted to perform well knowing you were there. Whether he did or not doesn't really matter to you, you still cheered for him afterwards and pulled him into the biggest hug you could muster, not caring what cameras caught that moment.

Liam saw it first, or rather, someone in the garage did (probably Isack with him being as chronically online as he is,) and he had to sit down before he panicked too much after they showed him. It wasn't bad, it wasn't like anyone had caught you making out in the driver's room but he hated it cause he wasn't in control of the narrative, he hated that social media could just make up anything it wanted and he had no say in it. He's a little ashamed of the fact that his first thought wasn't 'maybe we should just say it and be proud,' it was likely 'how do I get this taken down.'
He saw the hate and the rumours and obviously that affected him but what shook him more was all the support, the people saying they 'loved it' or they 'thought they made a great couple' because that meant that those people knew. He felt seen and it made him panic.
A tiny part of him worried that you'd hate him for it, for bringing all this drama with him. He didn't want you to have hate thrown at you for being associated with him and he didn't want you to hate him for bringing you to the paddock to 'show you off' when this was the result. He didn't know what the plan was, he hoped maybe if he could keep you off of social media forever, fully Sabrina Carpenter "I have a good idea babe, maybe let's stay inside," but that plan didn't work for very long.
Liam read over his post at least ten times before he posted it, screenshotting it sending it to you, his mum, Paul from PR, Isack, anyone who would listen to him for him to ask "is this going to be okay?" I think after a while though he managed to hype himself up so much he clicked post before he realised what he'd done. And then everyone knew.
You got a lot of hate, obviously but you were actually shocked at the amount of support you actually got. First it was drivers behind you like Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Riccardo, then it was celebrities that happened to know your name Ed Sheeran, Chapel Roan, Conan Gray etc, then it was team admins with VCARB claiming you as a member of the family in a comment section and it all made you feel a little better about being a publicly gay couple.
The gay side of F1 fanbase latched onto you hard. They were already making fan art and fanfictions about you since you two were seen together in New York but having it confirmed was like Christmas coming early for them. The two of you were supported ferociously with F1 Tumblr becoming nearly uninhabitable for any who didn't accept or like you. As intense as that was, it was still support coming your way that helped to drown out the hate that came from the toxic comments
Liam made a point not to read social media usually lest he accidentally start spelling his own name 'Slowson' but he does occasionally see a nice comment that he reads to you to prove that maybe everything is okay (even if he's the one that sometimes needs that proof more than anyone)
He eventually is really proud to be seen with you and to see you at races supporting him, broadcasts showed you watching him on screen with the commentators introducing you as his boyfriend and you sometimes even had a little caption of "Y/N L/N - Liam Lawson's Partner" as footage played of you looking serious at a screen while he's racing. Moments like that make him happy, even if he wouldn't admit that without feeling embarrassed.
Shockingly, it was Liam that first pitched the idea of writing a song about you. He'll sit bashing something out on guitar one night and jokingly said it was about you which made him actually start to try writing about you. Whether or not he ends up with a great song at the end, fans still notice that he posts a lot of covers of love songs to his tiktok.
When you wrote a song about him he made a BIG deal about it, sitting down to watch like an audience member. I don't think he'd cry unless it was particularly emotional as a song but I do think he'd beam so much you can't see his eyes anymore, his teeth on full display in the worlds biggest grin. (VCARB admin definitely found the song and made some silly tiktok about it causing Liam to shake his head and pretend he's mad when really he can't stop his own smiling.)
You offered to teach him to play some of your songs but that really just ended up with you kissing him a lot since you wanted to do it the 'cheesy' way by sitting behind him and guiding his hands to guitar stings.
He pretends he doesn't get jealous, he pretends he doesn't care if people touch you on stage or fangirls thirst after your pictures on social media, hitting interviewers with a "yeah, nah, yeah I don't mind, I mean he comes home to me so why should I care," but he'd be lying to himself if he wasn't caught glaring at anyone who gets too close to you.
He likes seeing you in VCARB merch. It started when you just picked up the first shirt you saw before leaving the house one day which happened to be a VCARB shirt and you were seen out in it in public. Everyone freaked and news outlets with nothing better to care about posted how you were "showing support for your boyfriends team." After that Liam would just start handing you things to wear. If you asked him to grab you a jacket? Boom, VCARB waterproof. If you asked for a comfy outfit when you're sick? Boom, old worn Alpha Tauri shirt. It was almost a meme at that point and whenever you came to one of the races it became understood that you had a uniform you had to wear. One time you were running late accidentally pulled on the wrong teams shirt, you probably had an old Ferrari shirt you picked up from working on the F1 movie or one of Liam's redbull shirts that was shoved to the back of a drawer and Liam was not impressed. He pulled off his own VCARB jacket and draped it around you, "for your modesty" he passive aggressively said, choosing to freeze to death without a coat rather than let his boyfriend walk around with another driver's mark on him. Whatever shirt that was that you had on mysteriously disappeared when you put it in the wash that night.
I imagine he's still a little star struck that he knows you let alone is dating you. He sometimes gets a bit stressed backstage or going through barriers with you cause he forgets he's allowed to follow wherever you go, he looks around like security is going to tackle him until he remembers he can go right up to you and hold your hand.
Speaking of fangirls on social media, the edits of the two of you go so hard. Liam accidentally finds himself liking a few of them and now its become a big game of 'where's wally' trying to work out which ones Liam's seen and liked. (I imagine someone made a sick cars one where he's lightning and you're sally and he saved it to his actual phone's camera roll like a grandma printing a meme)
Liam loved music (and he loved you just as much) so it made sense for him to accompany you on tour. He wasn't on stage or anything but he relished watching you from the wings and playing guitar for you backstage, threatening to upstage you.
He signs your guitar before you go on stage. He thought you were joking when you asked him the first time but when he saw that you weren't he jumped at the idea. He pretended he hated it in a "ugh can't believe you're making me do this" way but he couldn't hide his smile when you were practically branded with his name and number (and maybe VCARB sticker too if be had one lying around.) He also reposted a picture of you on stage with that signature on display to his instagram story so it's clear he was proud of his handiwork.

He was proud, insanely proud. He watched from the wings of your tour beaming and looking at you in almost awe. Sometimes he was spotted in the wings by a fan so hundreds of pictures of that started floating around with captions "get you someone who looks at you like this"
He loves hanging out with you backstage and in dressing rooms, his camera roll is full of pictures and videos of the two of you backstage whether that's you in stage clothes (what? he finds you hot!) or little videos of you goofing off or singing together.
You desperately try to get him in your music videos but you have yet to break him (that doesnt mean you should stop trying though.)
You did manage to get him on stage with a guitar on your final show in New Zealand to sing your F1 Movie song with you which went understandably viral on social media and you keep teasing him about starting a double act. At the end of the song you kissed him on stage (your first public kiss since the announcement) and when everyone was cheering you, and Liam was in front of you part blushing and part mortified you thought ...maybe everything was okay.
