When My Uncle, who’s completely deaf, was about 17, he got in a heated argument with my great aunt, his mother. They were furiously signing back and forth. Suddenly they both stopped and started laughing and laughing. My great aunt had accidentally signed, “Don’t you yell at me.”
I have to say goodbye to my host family tomorrow morning :(
Gonna miss Tokyo!

Truth Coming Out of Her Well to Shame Mankind, 1896 by Jean-Léon Gérôme
I’ve been thinking a lot about it and this is literally the best title of anything
so I guess it was some ancient Greek who said “truth lives at the bottom of a well” and I don’t know what he meant or why it stuck, but I’ve seen a lot of 19th-century references to it (because people always love showing off how much they know about stuff)
but I like this because imagine how fucking pissed off you would be if you lived at the bottom of a well in the first place, but then you had to climb all the way out of it somehow because humans were such unbelievable assholes that you were forced to yell at them in person
“I CAME OUT OF THE WELL BECAUSE YOU NEED TO STOP”
I just spit all over my phone lol

Sorry duolingo but I think I’ve found someone new 😍
I wish they had Greek too!
Me: holy smokes I'm going to Japan in 4 months I'm so excited
Also me: *tries to talk to a native speaker, gets super nervous, fails terribly*
Me: holy smokes I'm going to Japan in 4 months I'm so screwed
Learning a language takes a lot of time and patience. You won’t be fluent over night. You won’t get immediate results, but don’t be intimidated by the hours that need to go into it. The time it takes to become fluent in a language is different based on the learner, the teacher, the resources. Don’t be discouraged if a language outside your native language’s family doesn’t come easily. It takes time. It takes patience. (Please translate this so language learners who don’t speak English can also read this)
I really love languages. I love being able to understand people who don’t speak the same language I learnt when I was a child. It’s fantastic, it’s magical. I love it when I hear people speaking a foreign language and I love it even more when a native speaker listens to them and their eyes go wide and a smile crosses their faces. I love being able to speak with people from all over the world. I love the languages I speak and the ones I don’t. I love accents, I really enjoy listening to different accents, they are all beautiful and every one of them tell us a different story. Languages are not only a tool, they’re also part of our identity and that is why I love them. I do not express myself the same way in English or in my native language and that’s wonderful. It doesn’t matter if a language is spoken by millions of people or just a few thousands. Every language is amazing and perfect and everyone should be aware of that. Learning a language is hard and requires a lot of effort but it pays off because it brings people together and it makes us better as individuals. Go learn a language guys, you won’t regret it.

Stop Trying to Figure it All Out / Deja de Intentar Comprenderlo Todo
Think about it. They say that learning a new language comes more easily when you’re young. That’s because a child has no choice but to accept the language just as it is presented to him. He doesn’t need some rigorous explanation about why something is conjugated irregularly or why a letter makes a certain sound.
One plus one will always equal two. But “two” is not equal to “too”. Or even to “to” for that matter. You see. You have examples of this in your own language. This isn’t math people! So be kind to the new language you’re learning.
This is a major stumbling block for many people. Many language courses like to teach hard and fast rules. When students come across exceptions, and they’re always there, they immediately want to wrap their heads around it. I’ve got news for you. You cannot control a language, but you can accept it with all its beautiful exceptions just as they are.
I have found that when you need an explanation for everything, even when there is no explanation, it causes frustration. This, inevitably, makes language learning boring and more work than it has to be.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Love your new language the same way you would want your partner to love you. Unconditionally.
Incondicionalmente.
Read this article in both English and Spanish, then compare and contrast the two forms of communication.

How Learning A New Language Changes Your Brain And Your Perception
Learning a foreign language opens us up to new experiences, work opportunities, and allows us to meet people we may never have otherwise. More than that, research has shown learning a language can also physically change brain structure and adjust perception.
When we learn a language, we create new neural pathways in our brain, which can lead to noticeable changes. The left hemisphere is generally believed to be the logical part of the brain and is where many of our language skills originate. However, a 2012 Swiss study observed that learning a foreign language later in life is associated with thickening of the cerebral cortex — a layer of neurons specifically responsible for memory, thought, consciousness and, of course, language. This increased thickness can lead to better memory and sharper thinking later in life.
Learning a new language doesn’t just change the physical makeup of the brain. Based on a theory known as linguistic relativity, learning a new language can also change the way we see the world. This is specifically true in relation to our color perception. For example, Japanese speakers have far more words to describe the color blue, and as a result are generally able to see more shades of blue than English speakers. On the other side of the spectrum, the Himba tribe of Namibia in Southern Africa have only five words to describe all the colors in the world. Researchers have observed that, without a word for the color blue, the Himba struggle to tell it apart from green — an easy feat for English speakers.

everything is actually a mess
Actually I love how I can say “I understand shit” and “I understand shit” and it can both mean “I understand everything” and “I understand nothing” English slang is horrific and if you’re not a native English speaker good luck this language is ridiculous
