Oklahoma City Police Fatally Shoot Deaf Man Despite Yells Of 'He Can't Hear'

The police department's spokesperson said he didn't know whether officers heard witnesses yelling that the man was deaf and couldn't hear the officers' commands.

Things to remember about the victim in this shooting:

- he was Hispanic

- he was seen trying to sign at the officers to explain what was going on

- he had no criminal record whatsoever

- neighbors reported that he always carried the “weapon” police felt threatened by, a pipe, because of the stray dogs in the area

- he showed no sign of understanding the officers’ verbal warnings not to get any closer, and it’s likely that he was advancing in order to read their lips

- he is the 712th death in police shootings this year alone

Antidepressants Can Interfere With Pain Relief Of Common Opioids

Some antidepressants inhibit a liver enzyme that converts common opioids into their active form. The interaction may reduce the effectiveness of certain opioids for people taking both medicines.

Folks, this study came out

very

recently (Feb 2019), so your doctor may not yet know about it. 

The article does a decent job of summarizing the research, but here’s the extra-short version:

Affected: Prodrug opioids (such as Vicodin and Norco)

Not affected: Direct-acting opioids (such as morphine and oxycodone)

They hypothesize that this has to do with the way the SSRIs inhibit certain enzymes in the liver that process the prodrug opioids into something the body can use.

Now, this study was specifically about SSRIs (the most common class of anti-depressant) used with prodrug or direct-acting opioids—so there was no research on how other antidepressants could impact prodrug opioid effectiveness. If they’re correct about the inhibition of that enzyme, though, certain non-SSRIs could have the same or similar impact on prodrug opioids.
