New Yuri and LGBT+ Women’s Media Label ‘Yuritribe’

On May 13th a new Japanese Yuri and LGBT+ Women’s Media Label, Yuritribe  (ユリトライブ) launched its Japanese website. Yuritribe describes themselves as “a label created by YURI Media Entertainment with LGBT+women and ally artists.”

Yuritribe states that Japanese entertainment industries often have problematic representations of female sexual minorities. Female homosexuality has often been used in erotic ways to cater to the viewpoint of heterosexual men. These relationships are often treated as eccentric heresy or forbidden love. However, in the West, natural and positive representation of LGBT+ women in media of multiple genres, such as drama, science fiction, and fantasy are becoming more popular and accepted. 

The label hopes to take a small step into a new era by creating yuri and LGBT+ women’s media that actively oppose the preconceived notions and prejudices that exist in Japan about LGBT+ people.

Yuritribe is looking for creators, artists, actors, models, performers, and musicians to work with. They welcome that such creators contact them.

Personally, I am thrilled to see a new yuri and LGBT+ women’s media label, especially one that appears to be actively working to go against the problematic tropes and stereotypes that exist within the genre’s and the country. I will be watching closely for new developments!
