There are all types of witches. When someone speaks about types of witches, they usually mean what path that witch has chosen to take. There are a number of paths one can choose from. Whichever one sounds the most like you or which one feels more appealing to you is the one you should look further into.
Artistic - Use of art within the practice.
Dance - subcategory of Artistic, focuses more on dance.
Theatrical - Subcategory of Artistic. Use theatre to honor deities or find their practice in theatre.
Melodic - Subcategory of Artistic. Focuses on music and instruments.
Cottage - Focus on hearth magic and magic of the home.
Stitch - Branch of both Cottage and Kitchen. Focus on magic within sewing and repairing.
Chaos - Using baneful magic.
Blood - Branch of Chaos. Use blood in magic and rituals.
Necromancer - Branch of Chaos. Take spirit work a step further. Very good at communing with and controlling the dead.
Storm - Branch of Chaos, though more often seen as its own. Uses emotions for spells and can affect weather.
Ceremonial - Focus on rituals and formal casting of magic.
Druid - nature-based practice.
Eclectic - Combining several paths to suit your needs.
Energy - The work is purely mental and uses energy for everything.
Green - Focus on the Earth.
Crystal - A branch of Green. Focus on stones, gems, and crystals.
Creature - Branch of Green. Work with creatures both astral, magical, and physical.
Kitchen - Uses magic in food, herbs, and anything relating to the home. Similar to the Cottage path, but with more focus on cooking.
Practical - branch of Kitchen. Adept at spellwork and use sigils.
Lunar - Draws power from the moon.
Omni - Similar to the eclectic witch, researches and practices any and all paths.
Planetary - Focus on working in time with the planets’ natural shifts and changes.
Starseed - “Old” souls that have been sent from all corners of the universe to aid Earth.
Shaman - Characterized by using altered state of mind to contact spirits and the divine.
Spirit Worker - Communes with spirits.
Exorcist - Branch of Spirit Worker. Banishment of negative entities or unwanted spirits.
Hedge - Focus on spirits and communing with them and traveling between the living world and the after life.
Oracle/Diviner - Branch of Spirit Worker. Focus on divination and contact to the divine.
Shadow Worker - Branch of Spirit Worker. A mix of Hedge and Spirit Worker. Summons and tames shadows and shadows of their own past and personality.
Sun - Draws power from the sun.
Star - Draws power from the stars and constellations. Not to be confused with Space.
Sea - Centered around the sea.
Swamp - Works with rivers and bayous.
Space - Works with otherworldly entities. Not to be confused with Star.
Solitary - Independent and works alone.
Subtle - Otherwise known as “closeted” or “in the broom closet”. This path is usually not a choice and when it is it is our of fear of not being accepted.
Therian - Otherwise known as “otherkin”, the involuntary state of identify as nonhuman on a non-physical level.
Urban - Focus on urban approaches to everything witchcraft.
Pop-culture - Branch of Urban. Use pop culture as inspiration for spell work and magic.
Tech - Branch of Urban. Uses technology in their craft.
Vampiric - Feed of the energy of others. Can be a vampire or works with one.
Warlock - A male witch who practices dark magic. Not to be used to label a male witch.
Winter - Focus on the cold and winter weather in their craft.
Witch of the Waste - Work with limited supplies or the desert.
For baby witches, don’t worry about what type of witch you want to be until you have covered the basics. It is more important to know how to protect yourself, so this can come later. 😊
