I'm a real sucker for a game where the name above a character's dialog boxes changes as you learn more about them.

It really helps to get into the story, I think.

Sometimes,
when im on my Linux pc
or watching one of those videos where they improve a game performance so it can run at 1000fps on the original hardware / look how ive ported Blender on this old flipphone
It makes me wonder, how much hardware are we wasting by using inefficient/bloated software?
My Internet service is (advertised as) something like 100-1,000x faster than what I had growing up, and it sure doesn't load pages 100-1,000x faster.
IIRC, in Windows 11, the start menu is written in JavaScript as an Electron app. So basically a little mini webpage and a mini browser to look at it.
Also Microsoft: The Minecraft devs should be absolutely embarrassed that there are so many mods that can make the game run far better without sacrificing anything, and in many cases improving it (like adding shaders).
So to answer your question: A lot, I think.
the sheer fucking terror i just felt while playing factorio, im placing transport belts and then i see a what appears to be a flashlight pointing right at me offscreen, turning and APPROACHING, and then i realize its just the light from a train. kid playing minecraft scared of herobrine vibes.
You will soon learn that trains are in fact the apex predator on Nauvis.
please recommend me good Factorio: Space Age planet mods that can be added to an in-progress playthrough without fucking up the tech tree. i got Moshine, Cerys, and Maraxsis already but im almost done with them and i dont want the mid-late game to be over yet. i dont wanna have to go out towards the shattered planet yet lmfao
I’m playing through Vesta at @cuttledragon’s recommendation and I’ve found something really funny. The algae filtering process that you need to get every basic material on the planet has only one non-fluid ingredient (a filter for the algae water), and is meant to return roughly 85% of your filters. However, you can do the filtering in a biochamber which has an inherent +50% productivity bonus, so you actually get back about 127.25% of your filters.
The recipe accepts quality because it has at least one non-fluid ingredient; produces algae that can be turned into iron, copper, or stone; and returns its catalyst functionally 100% of the time. I made a few hundred legendary filters and now I have as much legendary iron/copper/stone as I want forever ^.^
Oh damn that never occurred to me. I'll have to do that whenever I get back to that save.
so ive been playing factorio lately, and at some point i think my maid instincts kicked in because i at some point started referring to my factory as "my lady"????
and ive started like, actively targeting biter nests before they cause an issue because "i need to slaughter them before they cause a problem for my lady", and i sound like a badass but like.
GIRL!!!
i guess having a crush on glados as a kid kinda gave me a thing for lesbian superstructures :/
Because we're also normal about factory games and lesbian superstructures. So normal that we brainstormed a factory game dating sim a while back and keep coming back to the idea every so often. The original concept was when we were still relatively boring but the general gist was that different ways of building your factory would be attractive to different partners — raw throughput impresses the fully automated factory complex on the same planet, research and progress towards the ostensible goal impresses the human-turned-living-machine, environmentally conscious design woos the fungal superintelligence, and efficiently slaughtering her warriors convinces the alien hive mind of your strength.
Nowadays we still like that aspect but god we were missing so much by not focusing on the relationship between the player and their factory. To what extent is she an extension of you? To what extent are you a component of her? Do you love her? Does she love you? Are you the one entering these relationships, or the loyal servant setting your lady up with potential suitors? Or are you both? When you start to take your construction drones and auto-supply and map coverage for granted does that mean you're starting to ascend, or that you've just become a being so adapted to life within her that you can't survive outside? Where does she end and you begin? When does a tool overtake its creator?
I know how to mod Factorio. If anyone knows how to write something like this, HMU.
I keep getting Marx and Engels (Marxist philosophers and authors) confused with Bob’s and Angel’s (famously expansive group of factorio mods), which has been leading to some very confusing posts
I keep trying ore sorting with Marx and Engels but they keep giving me too much copper (they want the ores to be evenly distributed)
*Trying to build rapport with a 3 year old by engaging with their interests*: What's your favorite crayon flavor? Do you think Fire Engine Red would pair well with a Chardonnay?
A lot of modded Factorio planets are derivative of one or more of the basegame planets. Cerys is riffing on Fulgora with added complexity, Corrundum appears to be based on Vulcanus but with a ton of detailed chemistry added on, and Paracelsin is kinda like if Vulcanus was frozen.
In contrast, Maraxsis really stands out as a planet that's basically doing it's own unique thing. There are bits and piece from the other planets, you're working with lava, you're farming fish, all of your infrastructure requires constant resource consumption to keep working. But none of it feels like a remix of the other planets, it coalesces into something that feels entirely novel. I've played a handful of the more popular planets and none of them are quite so chock full of creativity, it's really impressive. I should highlight the pressure domes in particular, they're such a fun space restriction to play around with.
That said, I think maybe I like Paracelsin more. I am deeply in love with Aquilo heating mechanics, and I am more than happy to spend my time designing big long multistage ore refining setups with heat pipe integration. It's not just the heating mechanics, though. I think it's really fun to work through the whole zinc refining process in and of itself. I like how many entangled products you have to deal with, via recyclers and flare stacks and circuit conditions (Rubia also did this well, I'll note). I think the mechanical plant occupies a really nice niche that I'm glad to see filled, it's a really nice reward alongside the non-freezing (but super expensive) zinc pipes. In a modpack like this, I like that it delays the cold fusion reactor a little bit, cuz getting that from just Aquilo science could be a bit too easy, a bit too early. And I think it's funny being bottlenecked by water you're getting from pumpjacks.
Yeah I'm really impressed by Paracelsin. It's not doing anything radical, it's not reinventing the wheel, it just does a lot of things right. Really feels like a continuation to Space Age, building on its ideas and pushing complexity a bit. Good stuff.
I quite liked Maraxis, even if I keep having trouble with my automated sub getting stuck and I never did line framing with quality. Rubia was pretty interesting, though I certainly don't vibe with its sense of humor. Somehow I always had the feeling that I was doing Rubia "wrong" but I don't really know why I do quite like all the passive buffs you can get when combined with other mods, though.
I should probably give Paracelsin another chance. I really rushed through it because I added it to an existing save and was annoyed that I had some fusion reactors that were stuck at being half built.
okay I'm curious
have u ever driven over 100mph (160kph)
yes
no
I've don't drive at all
like u personally putting the pedal to the metal not just being a passenger
it's called the need for speed they made a whole franchise about it
>3am
>bunch of over caffeinated 19 year olds
>drove out to the middle of nowhere
>hit it until we saw the speedometer cross the line
Sometimes you're just bored
On a totally unrelated note, it's absolutely incredible how you don't even notice the insane level to which you're passively suicidal until you start estrogen
That 20 year old pontiac that my parents let me use was def not the safest thing to pull shit like this in but hey I lived
There's a section of highway 395 in Eastern California that's a straight shot descent from the Owens Valley in the Eastern Sierras (elevation ~7k) right down into Mojave desert (elevation: diddly squat)
It's an almost perfect line, full highway speeds, and a shocking but gradual elevation decrease as you follow the valley floor. I've always thought it would be the perfect spot to let it rip, but my current Subaru isn't exactly a speedster
I got my then 20 now almost 30 year old Subaru Outback with 200k miles on it up to 115 mph on a flat straight highway. I do not recommend doing this, however. The poor thing was trying to shake itself apart.
I value both my subie and my life too much for this now
Yeah, I'm not going to do it again. I also love this old car, but I'll just say your comment about having been passively suicidal is certainly resonates.

I'm here to lay down and take ibuprofen. And I'm all out of ibuprofen.
i imagine superman flies batman around like this
Batman on the bottom and Superman is carrying him with his super toesies
Had a nightmare the other night in which they rebooted DS9. The plot of the episode I watched was about Bashir and (Jadzia) Dax beefing over something or other on Twitter.
what the. fuck
Fish button does something, confirmed
So there's been a collective anticipating hype within NorCal this past month over the Lake Berryessa Glory Hole.
Yes, Glory Hole.
For context, it's a spillway to let overflow from the lake through the dam. The water hasn't been high enough to do that since 2019 (example above). So about 5 years of drought with no spillage.
That's how it looked when I was up there about a year ago. Recently, it's been inching so close to spilling point and edging us all so slowly that we're all going crazy over it and keeping watch of the rainstorms rolling in.
Just wanted to bring y'all this fun little tidbit of NorCal culture. ✌️
Glory Hole update for y'all:
She is starting to spill over 👀
EVERYONE!! She's done it! It took nearly a year but we got there in the end. We did it 🙏🥹
Outta my way straight boy I'm bout to get it

I'm glad to know now that if I or anyone else ever gets shot in NYC, the NYPD will stop at nothing and go on a nationwide manhunt just to find the perpetrator.
