A startled yelp pipes up from the fleeing AI-Ball, her tiny hands and feet flailing about before she stumbles to a halt. This gives Mizuki just the opportunity she needs to lean down and scoop her up into a palm.
"Ohhh! I can't believe this! You had another person you've been in cahoots with this whole time! Does the betrayal never end, Mizuki?!"
"Hard to be in cahoots with someone you've never met before," the girl counters with a sardonic edge. She turns her glance up to the anthropomorphic owl with a smile. "Thanks for that- she can be needlessly difficult sometimes. I dunno why it's so fun for her..."
Engle nods to acknowledge the girl's gratitude. "Just doing my duty." She avoids the "hoot" pun.
"What is it, exactly? A living prosthetic?" She gestures at the eyeball in the girl's hand, having not seen anything like it before.
"I dunno 'bout your health, but all this sugar is great for mine. I've never gotta sleep again!"
Until the inevitable stomachache, of course. Or the tide of exhaustion caught up to her. Or both.
Frye had been at this for too long already, really, far too preoccupied with the tasty buzz of sugar on her tongue and hot pulse of eager adrenaline to notice the increasing sloppiness of every swing made. No squid was immune to the need for sleep, but tenacious Splatlandian pride combined with the audacious recklessness of her sweet-tooth were both clearly a mighty force to be reckoned with in that regard.
Watching the axe carve through it's target, she was quick to cast her own neon candy blade wide as the new trio appeared, grin breaking open into what was the start of an enthusiastic battle cry-- only for the sound to catch in her throat, swaying a bit too hard on her feet and weapon clattering from her grasp as one hand shot against the wall for balance against a sudden head rush. Whoops.
Her words are patently untrue, and her waning technique speaks for itself. No one can keep this up forever, no matter how sugar-crazy they are.
With a wide swing, Engle eliminates any candy goblins that might've been missed by the knight. She turns her head and delivers a swift lecture to the winded warrior.
"Go home and rest. I'll destroy the source of the monsters myself."
She sounds determined. Without waiting for an answer, she heads deeper into the candy cavern.
She looked down at the hand, then looked up at the Owl woman and finished the bite she'd frozen midway through, chewing and swallowing before answering.
"Call me B--" She flinched, vision flashing red. "--Bell." She grit her teeth, panting, "Sorry. I'm getting these... weird flashes, lately."
There's a name, but she's still missing a form of ID. While Engle could try to sympathize with her plight, formality comes first to her one-track mind, so she imply tilts her head and asks again.
"Identification?"
She makes a beckoning motion and keeps her hand right where it is. It doesn't seem like she's going to budge from the table anytime soon.
"For me to actually affect a place outside of this, I would more than likely have to be out, y'know?" It does suck that something they should be able to do regardless of location, they were not. "I could give you something to remember them by at least. You'd just have to tell me in full detail what they are and make your wish more clearer and thorough. Wouldn't want room for loopholes."
Engle huffs. As frustrated as she is that she can't contact her fellow agents, taking it out on this person won't change anything. She simply has to accept this for now.
She thinks this over for a while. If she gains a memento of her friends, would it make remembering them hurt less? Or would the reminder bring her pain?
She thinks about what she's fighting for. Why did she become a Cyber Owl? Why did she dedicate her life to vanquishing the forces of evil?
It's because there is good, and because there is evil, that she chooses to fight on the side of good. And she has to remember who she's fighting for, even when they aren't here with her.
"... I would like you to bring a photograph to me," she finally says. "It's of a place and time in my memory. Can you do this for me?"
She'll share the details if they can.
She's rethinking definitely. "Oh. I couldn't destroy someone's home." However, it would be okay to eat something like a flower!
"Engle, how about we explore what more we can see?" Of all the things to actually be excited about, she finds herself gleeful about this entire situation! Beats getting attacked by people from awful memories.
"Good." At least she won't have to worry about Yumine eating somebody's house. When she asks Engle about exploring, her eyes light up with interest.
"You'd like to go scouting with me?"
Engle thinks it over for a moment. It'd be useful to bring a healer along, though she's used to going on missions by herself.
"... Alright. I can allow this. Even though you are a... Hawks agent."
She cringes.
"I have a couple leads. Where to?" She holds up her candy corn axe.
"I don't think some. Any of us can be sent back without a warning." He'd hate to leave Hiyori behind without having something prepared and he'd hate to be left behind without having a proper goodbye if it came to it, but...
"I wasn't planning on forming a relationship of any kind, but it just happened."
Only they decide when you get out. That seems to confirm what her roommate said. Engle's not sure how attached she should get with people who could disappear overnight.
"Hm." Engle plays with some feathers on her chin. "Well, as long as you know what you're doing."
"I'd like to leave, but escape attempts have been... fruitless, as of late," she says.
She looks at the orange knitted toy in his hands. That might've come across as a joke, though it wasn't her intention.
"It is called Hawks Agency and he protects people and investigates when needed. Our job is to help those in need as well as investigate any problems. I'm considered a sidekick.
Engle, are you perhaps interested in a job but wasn't sure? You will absolutely enjoy working with Hawks! He keeps the workplace very interesting."
The words "Hawks" and "Agency" together make the feathers on the back of her neck stand up. Nothing about the agency sounds villainous, exactly, but she can't shake this feeling about the name.
"I already have a job," she says, dismissing the idea outright. (Granted, the Cyber Owls aren't established here, but Yumine doesn't need to know.)
"A sidekick... not a henchman?" She hums. "How does he keep it... interesting?"
She's starting to think this is someone closer to Huxley than the Kommander, but Engle doesn't seem too sure.
"Ooh is it?" The uniform didn't look too radically different from what she was used to but sometimes the best of the best usually were hidden behind simplicity in the first place.
"I'm part of the Azur Lane. They got tech all up in the wazoo so honestly anything anyone makes they can probably replicate it. When they aren't trying to uncover more secrets of course..."
Azure Lane?
"I haven't heard of that before. American?"
She is named after New Jersey.
"What sort of secrets are these? You can tell me."
Let's see how serious of an agent she is. Engle leans in, as though expecting to hear a secret.
"Mmmm, I haven't thought about how my diet is," she starts. If she can eat raw food...maybe it wasnt entirely human?
"I can eat just about anything! How about yourself? I have to admit, I'm very tempted to eat the houses. But the people must live in them, mm?"
"Most sweets are off-limits to me. I guess it's alright if you eat your own house."
"Bits of it, that is. Don't overdo it." No one needs to eat themselves out of house and home.
Doesn't seem that Yumine has noticed anything shift. She chalks it up to maybe Engle is reserved. The world can be a place where friendship was hard to come by! Either way, she's more than happy to talk about her boss!
"Hawks is a lovely guy. Very understanding and sweet. He's dedicated to his work. He's truly got a heart of gold!"
She's absolutely clueless!
Hawks doesn't sound anything like the HAWK Kommander, though she can inspire that same kind of blind loyalty.
Engle continues to stare at Yumine, only moving her hand to give her chin feathers a stroke.
"This work he does... What is it? Tell me everything you know."
She's got the feeling this harpy sees him with rose-colored glasses.
The small thing is defintiely high contrast to Constantine's pale pink hair and silver blue eyes. The knitted orange being held in his hand is nearly comedic.
"It's for my partner. I plan on giving this to them when valentines day hits."
"Hm." Engle sounds interested for half a second. "That's nice." Then the feeling is dismissed just as quickly.
"Do people stay here long enough to form relationships?" she asks, still looking for a way to get out of the city.
"Device?" She had to look up for a brief moment to see what they meant. "Oh that! It's kinda a headband I guess? I wouldn't call it a device."
Even if it did function practically like one But she really hadn't seen it being used too much since arriving here in the first place. Outside of the first few days adjusting to everything new.
"I'd say you can have it but I don't know if it'd fit on your head. Kinda was made for me to wear and nobody else..."
Engle leans in to get a closer look at the device. It must have some sort of purpose, given the horseshoe of lights... but for the life of her, Engle can't figure it out. She leans back and rubs some feathers on her chin.
"Hm. Custom job? My uniform is the same," she says. She pats one of her bulky shoulder pads. "Who made it for you?" She's eager to learn more.
"Is this someone's idea of a joke? My 'spell book' only has four spells in it... this could have been a sticky note."
"It is kind of sticky, actually..." She turns the book over in her hands, displeased by the texture... and then slowly, carefully, gives one of the pages a lick. "Yeah. It's candy. I don't know what I expected."
"Don't eat the pages," warns the peanut butter warrior. "You might need what's written on them."
"Do the spells work?" Engle asks after a beat, having not seen spellbooks in action before.
"Coward. Hiding behind this sweet?" Engle's taking this way too seriously. "I'll destroy it and take you down." She clenches the candy corn axe in her hands.
A flock of chicken-sized Peeps fly at her, and Engle bats them away with her axe. But she can't fend off a wave this size on her own, and one in the back is charging up a candifying laser...
〜 "It's been a week and a half. A week and a half of eating nothing but bloody sweets. My teeth are going to rot out at this point. Could they at least give us some meat and potatoes?"
"Or dim sum..."
Engle sighs to herself, already missing the taste.
"We must put a stop to the Candy Witch for the sake of everyone's health."
"Can we keep doin' this forever?! All this free candy AND a free brawl to go with it!"
CRACK! That's another sweet shell broken, oversized candy lizard tossed hard against the far side of the colorful cave wall. More treats to add to her pile!
"It'd be best if this ended, for everyone's health... but I will help you defeat the beasts."
Engle swings her candy corn axe at an unsuspecting sugar goblin. Three more show up to take its place. This could go on for a while.
