You'll probably have a blunt comment or two thrown your way by Mizuki but she's not mean I swear

One is extremely intelligent and can master a year's worth of cooking classes in one second(through cheating a bit); the other is inhumanly strong and can punch people hard enough to create shockwaves (brains AND brawn baybeeee)

On the hunt for their missing perv(aka Kaname Date, Aiba's former partner and Mizuki's adoptive dad)

Very competent and cool but also the biggest silly billies I love them so much

Could a sentient prosthetic eyeball gasp in delight? It certainly sounded like it, judging from the noise Aiba produced. "Yes, please!! Weird bugs are the most wonderful of all!"

A resigned sigh escaped her poor partner. The idea was already out there; no backing out of it. "Yeah, might as well. She's gonna be in my head for about the next week guilt-tripping me over it if we don't."

"Correct!"

"Tragically, in all the time I have been analyzing this recent surge of mysterious flora, I've yet to see a single mysterious insect skittering amidst its petals."

"Any number of well-founded conclusions you could've drawn from your research and that's the one of the utmost importance? You gotta focus on what's actually there, not what you WISH was."

IT WAS FASCINATING IN A WAY, seeing how far technology has come even from her own world 一 where teleslates were but tools, this one had her own sentience. though perhaps that was a little strange given amphoreus' true nature. in the end, she had been merely a line of code in the myriad of lives she had experienced, making her wonder if she was no different to the creature that sits so comfortably upon the young girl's shoulder. ❝ I see. Not even as a display, too, ❞ she comments, tilting her head every so slightly.

when the talk of insects, or rather an encyclopedia of such, is brought up, aglaea places a finger to her chin as if in thought.

❝ Are you a connoisseur of insects then? While I don't have one on hand, there is bound to be one in the Athenaeum. For now, I could offer you brief descriptions... I'm quite used to nymphs taking their forms, you see. ❞ whether mizuki would be interested in hearing it would be another story, however...

Others being drawn to Aiba's unique form and presence had become nothing new to the pair of partners. Quite a contrast to back home, when her very existence was kept a secret to most people. Maybe it wasn't the best idea to be so brazen. Malefactors could still operate in the city, after all, and having her as a secret weapon would be sorely preferable in that instance. Until the need for being inconspicuous was made obvious, she was plenty content to stretch her stubby little legs.

"Oh, yes! I will cling on to every word and eagerly anticipate the further research to be had!"

"Urggh, I have to have this in my head enough. You're not really gonna make me sit through this, are you...?" Despite her protests, the girl stayed where she was, even though she really wasn't being forced to sit through it. Perhaps she wanted to not be separated from her companion, or maybe a small, genuine dose of intrigue lay underneath...?

"Really is some party!"

"Shame I've got nobody left to dance with--" Is that an invitation? Yes, it is. Has she danced with a lot of people already? Of course! But what's one more?

"Yep, that sure is a shame." She's caught onto the invitation, of course- just letting the cheeky "misunderstanding" sit for a second or two before adding on.

"Although, I haven't had anyone to dance with all night! Maybe we can help each other out with our problems, if you'd like?" She offers one hand out towards the other young woman with a smile.

SHE HANDS THE PLATE OVER, her own in hand as to not cause an accident. an assortment of snacks from the tables were spread across each, their glasses filled with the appropriate drinks to accompany it as well. ❝ It seems there is no shortage of food to enjoy. I'm glad I was able to bring us both back an ample amount, ❞ she chimes, glad to have company while both were wallflowers for the time being. though there was one query on her mind...

❝ Does your companion not need anything? ❞ she wasn't sure if she should grab anything for the other, too, now that she had returned.

"Thanks!" Mizuki answers the act with a big smile, taking the plate that's been passed her way. "Yeah, it's honestly kind of impressive they're managing to keep the table stocked enough to keep up with everyone in the city." Hearing about the ball left her a bit downtrodden that Ryuki wasn't here anymore to drag him to it, but she figured it'd still be fun to dress up for and stop by anyway. Finding someone else to hang out with was a nice bonus on top of that!

"Nah, Aiba doesn't eat." She shrugs the shoulder her gelatinous AI-Ball hamster rests upon to indicate her. "Just gotta charge her overnight and she's good to go."

"But if "anything" includes an encyclopedia of insects unique to your world, I will gladly take one of those!"

" While I've read and seen many unique cases for an eye.....AI as one is not one of them. Fascinating."

contrary to any assumptions, diana's words are don't mock– for someone who grew up surrounded by magic from the age of gods and mythics that exist as largely legend in the current age, the applications of technology from other worlds was an intriguing topic. granted, this was not the best of circumstances to talk in depth, but diana wasn't one to squander an opportunity.

Now that the attempted robbery had been dealt with, Mizuki's nerves had settled down enough to leave her in awe. The woman's stature over her own was eye-catching enough, but the speed and ease with which she'd acted to stop the criminal made it clear this was nothing to her. Especially with that lasso of hers- while an unexpected tool to use, she'd used it like she had been doing do her whole life.

This woman was just really cool, and it was through willpower alone that Mizuki remembered to respond in time.

"Yeah, her name is Aiba!" she responded, giving an enthused nod. "And the eyeball itself is a prosthetic specially designed to hold an AI like her."

Then a voice piped up in Mizuki's head. 'You know, you've become awfully cavalier about sharing the secret of my existence with this world.' And a counterattack. 'Relax, A.B.I.S. doesn't even exist here. There's no top secrets to break, and besides- look at her! She's trustworthy...I really hope.'

"Some things are just more important in life! You'll get over it."

Tama herself would mourn the idea of whatever videos Date had stored, but she was more than capable of finding that sort of material on her own. And fun as it was to rile Aiba's feathers, it wasn't worth it right now.

"...A year?" That wasn't possible. He knew time was strange her, obviously. He'd experienced it in that period of time before Tama had joined him, but... a year? He'd never lost so much time before, and Tama agreeing that it wasn't his fault made it all the more disorienting. "And nobody else.... I'm sorry, Mizuki. I should've..."

Should've what? Not much Ryuki could do, other than worry.

Mizuki could only give a sheepish nod at the expression of disbelief Ryuki held onto. It felt gut-wrenching to think she could so easily be separated from a friend for so long with no say in the matter at all. For being so hospitable, the Stars were real bastards in some ways...

"Hey, it's okay. I...we've been doing fine here. Besides the occasional shake-ups in whatever kind of dangerous way the Stars decide on, you know things here are pretty stable. It's not exciting, but it's livable." Mizuki didn't simply want to live in stability, though. She wanted to be able to see her friends and family again. Boss, Pewter, Iris, Kizzy, Mame, Ota...

Date...

'As of yet, there is nothing we can do to control the length and timing of our time here.' Very likely they'd never be able to hold such a power- it defeated the very way the city worked. Whether subjects were chosen by the Stars or if the mechanism functioned entirely randomly was uncertain too. Even so... 'Should that change, I'll make sure to get any information I can so neither of you will have to be left alone.'

"Aiba? You're a lifesaver!" Tama switched over to the mental comms right away at the sound of that familiar voice, her own wavering with the sound of grateful tears. "I'll just have to download a backlog here in the meantime to hold me over. Ryuki, I'm deleting your Half Might fanfictions to make space."

"Tama, wait-" She wouldn't.... right? No, that wasn't the right thing to focus on right now. Better to focus on Mizuki coming in for a hug, as much a force of nature as ever. "It's good to see you too, Mizuki."

Keeping track of time had never been his strongest point, but thinking about this city felt weird even by his standards right now. Thankfully, ignoring that sort of thing was one of his strong points.

"Has it... been a while?"

'I'm sorry, Ryuki. Having needed to erase plenty of data from my previous partner's reserves for matters I deemed of utmost importance, I completely understand where Tama is coming from.' Granted, the videos Date had been storing should have been deleted from existence long before she got to his personal copies. Getting to erase them to clear room for Animal Odyssey's four-part Insect Extravaganza had just been a bonus.

A few moment later, Mizuki set Ryuki down, still sporting a big grin on her face. Ryuki's question about the time that had passed changed that, though, her face falling to one more forlorn.

"...By our count, over a year." Life had stagnated so much in this place, it hardly felt like she was any older, any stronger- changed at all, really. "And there still hasn't been anyone else we know who's showed up besides you."

This girl must come from a way different world than Uzi's if she's actually friends with machines. There's only a single human that Uzi knows of from her world that was even a little nice to drones, and she got her innards slurped out as thanks.

"Kinda figured they were embellishing things, but I hoped it wasn't as boring as my school is. It's like, if the humans are all dead, why do things the exact same way they did? Clearly it didn't work well for them."

"But yeah, I'm the coolest. I don't know which other one you met, but judging from the pronouns, it's an easy win for me. If they give you any trouble, just let me know. Doesn't matter who it is, I can handle it."

In all fairness, AI on the level of Aiba or Tama were largely confidential, unknown to the world, left unable to be judged by them. Who knew what'd happen if they became so common as drones apparently had in this girl's world? Pewter sure wouldn't want to see things end up that way, she knew that much...

"Ah...yeah, it's like what they say about failing to learn from history. Still not sure how to feel about knowing humans are all dead in some universes, but it's hard not to think that's where we'll be headed sooner or later."

"Well, I'm pretty strong myself- at least as far as humans go. I dunno what kind of firepower drones tend to pack. I'll keep you in mind if I ever end up getting trouble from her and need some backup, though!"

Iris Sagan, also known as Internet idol A-set! Mizuki's father Renju Okiura once ran the idol company she works for, leading the two to meet and become fast friends in spite of Mizuki just being an elementary schooler at the time. Aiba, meanwhile, met Iris when Kaname Date took on what would become a serial killing case that she ended up tangled in, both of her own accord and factors nobody could've predicted. She's kind of...okay, she's definitely a space cadet, prone to following flights of fancy that can land her in trouble. Even so, Mizuki considers her to be her best friend and does everything she can to support her endeavors, and though Aiba doesn't care for her antics, she and her partner know that Iris is a genuinely kind person and can be a real force of positive influence in the world.

Kaname Date. The man, the myth, the massive loser. Being Mizuki's adoptive father and Aiba's previous partner, he's one of the most important people to both of them. Both express absolute exasperation with his rampant pervert tendencies, and they've each argued with him more times than any care to count...but they've also seen how focused and tenacious he can be to see things through when truly noble or just intentions enter his heart. He's proven he'd do anything to keep the people he cares about safe, and these two would do the same in a heartbeat. Date's missing in action at their current canon point after disappearing amidst an explosion, possibly thought to be dead. Neither believe him to really be gone, though, and while Mizuki's sure to give him shit for being gone so long, both she and Aiba will be truly happy to welcome back the missing member of their family.
