What Happened with Minzyās Father?
Recently, YG Entertainment (YGE) announced at a press conference on April 6th (South Korean time) that Minzy, famous idol from YGEās popular girl group 2NE1, would be leaving both group and the company upon contract termination this upcoming May. While this struck fans domestically and internationally as a heart breaking and sudden surprise, Minzyās fellow 2NE1 members apparently also did not know. This conflicts strongly with YGās statement that Minzy and the company reached this agreement back in January. Fans have questioned why other members were unaware if these terms had been reached several months ago. Furthermore, speculation has risen about Minzyās reasons for leaving: some focus on YGās potential corruption, while others focus on the long hiatus dealt to 2NE1 by YGE and lack of solo promotion opportunities during the group hiatus.
Perhaps in conjunction with these concerns, Minzyās father (colloquially nicknamed Father Gong) gave an accusatory statement on Instagram on April 6th, saying,Ā āIf youāre going to act like this with the media play, then Iām going to hold a press conference for the truth. I tried to leave it as a beautiful separationā¦āĀ
Was Father Gong hinting at media play? What was the ābeautiful separationā in this case and why does it seem to conflict with the reality of events as the father implies?
The fatherās words immediately sparked discussion and speculation, and fans wondered what āhidden truthā the father may know or be concealing. However, at the time of this post, he has within the past few hours since deleted the controversial statement and replaced it with another:
āI would like for you not to do false or wrongful DM (direct message) or translations. Ā I have figured out that misunderstanding can arise from saying and pointing out that something is untrue in the moment. Ā I hope that you will not misunderstand me.ā
Yet again, Father Gong has sparked more public speculation. It seems that perhaps he misspoke, or spoke too soon; after all, making interesting statements in the heat of a situation can make even a personās weak words seem even stronger. It seems the interest and attention Father Gong received was too much and he corrected his statement.
However, some fans have moved to allege that Father Gong felt pressure not from unwanted attention, but from the company itself. Unlike other idols who recently left their companies in the past year or so, Minzyās father lacks the power, money and resources to withstand such pressure; therefore, rumored public speculation points to pressure by YGE or its affiliates.Ā
