holy shit okay may have found a game-changer for web searches...with duckduckgo it's easy to turn off the ai features permanently, but regardless of engine there's the increasing problem of the search results themselves leading mostly to ai-generated articles on random ghost websites that say a lot without any information, and then the information they do give is contradictory or otherwise just wrong. this is especially a problem for me when trying to search for, e.g., a current list of the best products in a certain category.

finally searched for a solution and there IS in fact a giant hand-curated list of sites containing this content. it can be imported to ublock origin on desktop or mobile, and even can be used on iOS via the ublacklist extension in the safari app. it's updated regularly, and importing via the link as described should allow those updates to go into effect automatically.

i've only tested it a little bit, but after importing the list and repeating my duckduckgo search for backpack recommendations, my top results now lead to websites that appear to be linked to actual organizations in some form, with an "about us" page and the name of a founder and everything. the text is still often a bit wordy and SEO-optimized, but it now has actual recommendations that are relevant to the query. BIG IF TRUE???

Just a note for the local crowd

Every now and then a difficult period like this comes along: so it's time to request some assistance.

I've kind of been neglecting my vision for the past year or so, aware that I needed new glasses (and to go have a consult for possible eye-related surgery), but putting it off... and now the situation has, as it were, come home to roost.

The other day, when I was typing something and then (to check it before posting) had to pick up the Mac and hold it up to my nose to see what I'd typed... I realized that if this went on much longer, even with dictation (because after you dictate, you still have to edit...), I wouldn't be able to write.

That would be bad.

I need to go see my Eye Lady, get examined, and get both sets of glasses re-fitted with new prescriptions. This—as usual, each time it needs to be done every year and a half or two years, due to Weird Eyes—is going to run into a low-four-figure-ish kind of money. And due to other recent unexpected medical expenses, right now there's not enough dosh around (or spondoolicks or whatever term you prefer...) to get things sorted.

Therefore: can I get people interested in keeping a writer, you know, writing (as I've got three novels working at once at the moment...), to consider doing one of these things?

BUNJY RECIPE BOOK: TAX SHELTER CHICKEN SOUP

this is a variant on "marry me chicken soup", hence the name. it's really a type of tuscan chicken soup with midwest ingredients. I put dried peppers in mine, but you can omit those and it will still be insane.

YOU WILL NEED:

1 lb ground chicken

1 largish white onion, roughly diced

4 medium stalks celery, roughly diced

5 fat cloves of garlic, minced or run through a garlic press

6 cups chicken stock

4-5 handfuls of baby spinach

3 oz sundried tomatoes, cut into strips (the kind in the bag, not the kind in oil)

half a boxish of shell pasta

2/3 cup heavy cream

2 tsp smoked paprika

2 tsp dried thyme

salt to taste

splash of white wine vinegar

2-3 dried hot peppers (optional)

olive oil

INSTRUCTIONS:

in a heavy bottomed pot over medium heat, add a couple tbsp olive oil and brown your ground chicken until it's mostly cooked, then add the onion and celery. let it cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and the celery is cooked. add the garlic, thyme, sundried tomatoes, peppers (if using) and paprika, and stir just until the garlic smell has mellowed. add the chicken stock and scrape any browned residue off the bottom of the pot, then add the lid and cook until the tomatoes are hydrated. add the shell pasta and cover again until the pasta is al dente, then lower the heat to low, remove the lid and add the cream. stir to incorporate and add the spinach and stir around until it's totally wilted. add a small splash of white wine vinegar and salt to taste, and serve immediately. no marriage license required.

You have no idea when that indie mom blog is going down or when Pinterest will remove that recipe. Copy it down in a notebook, physically or digitally. Save it somewhere only you can remove it. So much research will have to be redone because the data was absolutely compromised, off by orders of magnitude, by using standard lab gloves.

Lord Havelock Vetinari is amoung the very few students to remain at the guild during the long Hogswatch Holy Day break and sees more then he should have.
