used to think it terribly silly (and kinda funny) when fantasy or sci-fi stories would have people refer to major recent historical events as The Flood or The Incident or The Revolution, and im sure historians fucking hate that because it's not helpful or descriptive, but we sure do be calling it The Pandemic

I'll shorten my commentary for the actual comment as opposed to the rant I did in my tags in the hopes this is more coherent and hopefully more academic: I study history in uni, and this is absolutely how things have always been named. I mean, no one thought to call it "World War I" till the second happened, before then it was called "the Great War" and they thought it was the war to end all wars.

I cannot even count the sheer fucking quantity of "Great Plague"s that came about from the various resurgences of bubonic and smallpox.

This is also why the moment a horrifying event is over, amidst the people calling it *THE NOUN*, you also find a bunch of people attaching the specifics of location/year/any other designator.

So even while most people are referring to "THE pandemic" , youll also see the "Covid pandemic of 2020" (yes it lasted longer, but we dub events with the starting year usually).

And fun fact (relevant to the original post) : those people who IMMEDIATELY attach any kind of specificity to major events, either are historians or know how history is actually recorded, and are trying to make it easier on future generations. Bc being a historian is not just looking at the past, it's also record keeping in the present so the future has documentation to even look at at all.

To a large extent, scribes were some of the earliest historians even if they did their job without conscious intent behind it.

And even people who had lived through WW I called WW II 'The War' - because that was the relevant event at the time, everyone knew what they were talking about.

It even gets to the point where it becomes a sort of code because it gets so vague. Germans, after losing WW II and watching the Allies dismantle everything, called it The Collapse (der Zusammenbruch). Everyday people didn't usually call it The Defeat or anything. It was The Collapse, specifically to disguise the horror, I expect, to not have to think about it too hard. And for them it was absolutely clear what that entailed.
