to say akutagawa snatched the two pork buns away would be an understatement. slate eyes widen and in an instant one is already devoured by rashomon in a single deadly chomp. the other, akutagawa holds within his hand and takes a bite.

he eyes yumeno for a second - suspicious about just where the kid managed to snatch them from. but oh well, that was someone else’s problem. he doesn’t give a verbal thank you, but lithe hand reaches out to pat yumeno on the head.

❝ go get more. ❞ is the simple command shortly after.

Was this payback for all the times he showed up at her door busted up? Absolutely. Was her injury from more than just wiping out? Yeah, but he didn't need to know that. As far as he's concerned, that smirk on her face just meant she tripped and busted her ass and used it to her advantage.

it’s 3am. yata stands in the doorway in only a tank top and boxers, drool still smeared on his cheek from sleep and hair even more of a mess than usual without his signature beanie. he squints at neff standing before him and his exhaustion riddled mind attempts to form a coherent thought. but his one brain cell had long since checked out for the night. . .

the sword is returned carefully to its place at his side. atsushi tries to focus on his movements rather than the way chuuya’s words rattle about in his already anxious mind. these days that anxiety was turned into a weapon - something to motivate him to continue his work in the name of the government he was all but enslaved to.

blood trickles down atsushi’s face from a fresh gash on his forehead. his body aches and his head pounds, but he completed the job. he did as he was instructed to do.

❝ i don’t really get a choice, do i? we’re hunting dogs. we complete our job whether we return alive or not. ❞ atsushi smiles reassuringly ( though falsely ) over at chuuya. the outcome could’ve been worse, right?

it was an odd sight - akutagawa having rashomon’s tendrils curl around yumeno like a wall of vines protecting the child from spray of bullets that approach. the shooters are dispatched easily, leaving trails of blood down the alleyway.

akutagawa turns to yumeno with a glare. he coughs softly before he grumbles, ❝ you are no use to the mafia if you are dead. ❞ but there was no order for yumeno needing to be returned alive.

Days had gone by since the mission’s start.  Even before there was this sense of dread which sunk down and clung to the city that she tried to push past.  But it only got worse.

It started off with hushed whispers in the hall, a comment here and there about Akutagawa missing another meeting, even JOKE about all of the paperwork he would have to do when he returned were shared among the mafiosos.  But jokes soon turned to silent, concerned gazes as those papers piled up, as even more meetings passed.  Scarlet only threw herself into her work in an attempt to drown out these feelings, just as she had done when she realized she liked the superior.  To what extent she still was not sure of, but she could STILL sometimes feel the warmth of his arm against her as he walked her home that final night.  She wanted to feel him again.

Such thoughts were a waste of time, but those thoughts happened to be the LOUDEST.  So she shut down, became more withdrawn, more unemotional.  She was but a machine which came into work, did what needed to be done, and left.  

It wasn’t until Higuchi approached her for help with planning his funeral that this mechanic, unfeeling pattern SHATTERED.  Her breath hitched, her heartbeat ran so fast that everything numbed.  Lithe fingers trembled and hesitated for just a moment as she reached out for the packet which contained a list of duties and plans for the funeral.  The damn which held everything back finally cracked.

❝ Flowers, ❞  she said after a pause which lingered a beat too long.  Her voice was horse and strained from staying utterly silent for so long and now needing to suppress the rapid influx of sudden emotions she could run from no longer.  ❝ I can handle flower arrangements. ❞

Higuchi gave her thanks, but her voice sounded far too distant, as if behind a thick layer of glass.  Scarlet gave a very brief nod in acknowledgement, and with that she swiftly left.  Faster and faster her footsteps carried her to the nearest private bathroom.  The door SLAMMED behind her, and she pressed her back firmly against it after flipping the lock to keep anyone and everyone out.  Sinking to the floor, she held the list firmly to her chest as she sank to the floor.  The paper crinkled beneath her fingernails; her chest heaved as she tried oh so desperately to keep her breathing calm.  Her nose burned, and tears clung to thick, snowy white lashes - threatening to spill and DESTROY the last shred of this façade she tried to play.  Broken sobs poured from her throat, but she couldn’t hear them.  She punched the door, but couldn’t feel it.  Again, again, and again she hit the wooden surface until her knuckles bled.  How long she was in there she didn’t know, but gradually her breathing calmed.  

❝ Damn you. ❞  She wasn’t sure who exactly she was saying that to.  

Higuchi, for giving her that last little push which crumbed her walls?  Akutagawa, for making her look forward to living only to die just as everyone else she loved had done?  Whatever divine being was out there which cursed her with this wretched existence?  Yes.  All of them, to some extent, yes.  But most of all, herself, for DARING to feel those emotions in the first place.  She NEVER should have let herself get too close to him like this.  It was foolish to think anyone was safe to cherish.

But by now it was far too late.

Yet, with the way the treat was like so gingerly; yet so hastily offered upon to them; it was if the boy though he were feeding a LION in a cage. The analogy was rather funny really; after all, it was HIM that could turn into a BIG CAT.

              They pick up the cookie and examine it closely. The sweet didn’t LOOK like it had been tampered with … but …

 ❝ l-look! i’ll even eat one too! ❞ he pulls out one to nervously take a bite. in truth he was just still terrified of little yumeno.

Chuuya kicks in the door of bar HOMRA whispering a quiet 'oops' under his breath as the doors slam to the floor. The engine of his lambo can be heard still running outside as he steps into the bar.

"Sup Kusanagi-San. I'm kidnapping the kid for today." He says to the bar tender as he tips his hat apologetically before abruptly sauntering over to the clansmen. "Let's go Yata. The bottle of Screaming Eagle in the car isn't gonna drink it's self." Chuuya then reaches forward to hoist the boy up and over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. "I'll uhh... pay to fix the door." He says sheepishly before scurrying out with Yata dangling over his shoulder.
