Saihoshi? Aka Ryoma x Shuichi?
Send me a ship and I'll talk about it!
I was wondering when I would get a ship with Ryoma! Though this is a ship I don't actually see too often with him I do enjoy the themes of this relationship, so lets talk about that!
This ship reminds me of passing by a big, old oak tree. Stable and study and strong--those are all things that Ryoma and Shuichi see in one another. Shuichi sees Ryoma's resilience through his heartbreaks and sees strength, where as Ryoma sees Shuichi moving forward as strength. They are strong in different ways, and their strengths can help one another overcome their weaknesses. Shuichi can gently guide Ryoma forward to the future, and Ryoma can provide Shuichi with the reassurance he needs to continue that journey. They're on a journey together, not sure where the road will lead them, but knowing that having one another is all they really need.
What I like about this ship: I appreciate this ship's air of emotional maturity. This is not quite the hot mess teen romance, but a relationship meant to last for eons. It's also just nice to see a character with dwarfism being treated with respect and dignity too--that's always a plus. It's quiet, warm and comfortable, like sitting around a campfire.
i refuse to accept that every Ryoma ship is a rarepair, he deserves better than that
"People who judge based on looks are everywhere. I say, let them talk."
You know you're in one of the character fandoms of all time where the biggest problem people seem to have with Ryoma is the fact that he's short. Like...it bothers them more than Ryoma himself.
In the anthology manga, he gets embarrassed by Kiibo's vocal attempts at installing height-related accomodations for him. And in the infamous "Longyoma" strip, the context of it is Shuichi actively needing to prompt Ryoma to imagine himself as being able to drive a car in the dream world, since it wasn't his first response. Which paints a picture of someone who is very comfortable with who he is appearance-wise, and prefers to not have his disability made a spectacle of.
Because yes, that is what it is. He's not "just short," because even people who are just naturally short would be more along the lines of...Kokichi or Fuyuhiko height (5-foot-1). Rather than 3-foot-5. Man is all but confirmed to have a form of dwarfism, with it being shown rather than outright told. And the people who think that's something to be "fixed..." Yeah...not a great look.
What I'm trying to say is, you can have a short character without feeling the need to have them constantly reference their lack of height, or feel the need to "fix" them by having them grow taller.
You can have a short character--a character with dwarfism, even--be comfortable with their own appearance, despite what anyone else may say. And I think that's pretty cool.
I know it’s like, not a real problem and I’m just being a hater but it bugs me so much when ppl woobify kaito like he’s this emotionally intelligent person when he’s like, canonically super insensitive, borderline cruel about ryoma’s depression.
also canonically homophobic if we go by the original japanese but that’s a whole other thing
Ugh, tell me about it... It's so infuriating, especially when he turns around and spontaneously gives Maki--someone he barely knew at first--all this support and encouragement because he thought she looked lonely. Oh, but apparently the star athlete he looked up to in middle school wasn't enough for him to spare the same treatment.
It still sends me seething, the fact that Ryoma was deprived of encouragement from Kaito that could've very well improved his mental state, if only slightly. Only for that effort to get invested into an unrepentant assassin who actively tries to continue the killing game at multiple points, and regularly makes death threats towards anyone who makes eye contact with her.
Don't even get me started on the romantic pairing between Ryoma and Kaito, good god.
Okay in all seriousness. There's something that I REALLY want to talk about as an open discussion with the fandom, but. This is not going to be a very nice thing to hear/talk about.
It's about how Gonta is treated by the fandom.
As a fan of all the V3 characters now, and as someone who has always been a fan of Gonta, and as someone who has many mental disabilities and two diagnosed neurodivergancies... I'm tired of playing nice about it.
You all need to stop being ableist towards Gonta.
I've mentioned in the past that I don't like shitting on personal interpretations. I don't like saying something is or is not canon because narration is just a big web of text that you try to decipher with your own personal biases, experiences, and thoughts. That's why two literary analysts analyzing the same text with the same literary criticism rules can come to wildly different conclusions--why people develop different headcanons from the same canonical information.
But one of the things that challenged my integrity is just how many people view Gonta as this innocent, naive, ignorant, baby boy who can do no harm/never has a complicated/dirty/violent/sexual thought in his life ever.
This incredibly ableist interpretation of the character bothered me for, well, obvious reasons (See: It's fucking ableist, need I say more?) but I never challenged it as harshly as I am now because to be frank, it's not my place to tell people how to HC a character. It still isn't. But I've pretty much given up on my integrity on the subject and have decided to go all in on discussing why this interpretation of Gonta is just. Really bad.
First of all, not to promote my own analyses here or anything, but I think this analysis I did of Gonta explains a LOT in regards to the ableism the cast gives him in canon. I also think that this subtle ableism is why the fandom is so bad with Gonta's characterization in headcanons and fanfic--because they've seen how the cast treats him, and they think it's normal. They don't see the microaggressions, they don't see the subtle ableism in the cast--they just see this big giant idiot who speaks like Tarzan in the English version (which... I don't actually know why people assume Tarzan (Thinking of Disney's version) is stupid. Like as a boy he had to reinvent the spear with no one to guide him on how to do it. He was able to strategize and outsmart "civilized" men in the final showdown. Still I digress) and don't see the literal genius behind his social awkwardness.
There is also another very important point I'm going to make in addition to this, and it's going to be very uncomfortable to Gonta fans who insist he's nothing but a sweet baby who only has pure thoughts. Especially to the fans who insist he "can't be sexual" or think it's weird to ship him with his peers.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but... Gonta blatantly has sexual desire and gets horny right in canon.
This is further clarified here:
It wasn't a matter of Gonta didn't want to touch her because touching someone in their underwear was inappropriate, or being flustered because she was in her underwear which is inappropriate...
It was literally a "weird feeling" that made him unable to approach her or touch her. A "weird feeling" that Miu makes pretty obvious as to what it was--sexual arousal.
He literally was sexually attracted to and felt sexual arousal from looking at Miu in her underwear. He had sexual feelings and thoughts about Miu. Why?
Because Gonta is a young man.
Gonta is a brilliant, talented young man who has normal human thoughts for someone his age--sexual desires, upsetting thoughts, complicated thoughts, ectect. He is not a child, he is not mentally stunted (I've been informed that people have literally said this on Ao3 for the NSFW Gonta fics, please for the love of god stop that)
I think the reason why Gonta fans typically want to keep him as a "pure baby child who can do no wrong" is because treating him like the young adult that he is makes it harder for them to justify Chapter 4. Every time I've seen a Gonta fan that hates Kokichi, it's always followed by the sentiment of "Kokichi manipulated and abused Gonta into killing Miu, so it's all Kokichi's fault." They're afraid of nuance and liking a character with the grey morality of genuinely thinking Mercy Killing the cast is a viable option, because it challenges their own morals about the character they adore.
To those people who read this and are upset: You can and should like Gonta! Gonta is a magnificent character who showcases the subtle way microaggressions can manifest and hurt people, he's a good-hearted person and a literal genius, he cares deeply for his friends and loves everyone with upmost sincerity.
But.
You need to re-evaluate your stance on Gonta if you think he's a stupid, naive fool who Kokichi manipulated. You need to re-evaluate why you think those thoughts, why you think Gonta being shipped with anyone is "Kinda weird" or "has weird consent problems" or "give you the ick." You have to challenge yourself and ask yourself uncomfortable questions in regards to why you treat Gonta like a child when canon has proven otherwise, why you think he cannot have violent or sexual thoughts, why he can't think mercy killing his class is the only way to save them.
This isn't an attack on you--but understand that these specific takes on Gonta? They are ableist in nature. They belittle and dismiss him, they treat him like a child, an idiot who can't think for himself--and you have to come to terms with the fact that Gonta is a far more complex character with complicated thoughts and feelings who is a young adult. Not a child. A young adult.
So again, ask yourself this: Why are you treating this young adult like he's a toddler?
Honestly, despite how much I utterly despise Gonta, I find myself agreeing with most of what this post says. I'm sick to death of all the people who treat him as this innocent cinnamon roll who, to quote Tsumugi, "is such a sweetheart and wouldn't hurt a fly."
Completely ignoring the fact that he went out and violently abducted most members of the cast, just because he was under the assumption that they didn't like bugs. It doesn't matter that it was a lie told on Kokichi's part. Gonta's first response to hearing that other people don't like bugs the way he does was to kidnap them and assault them with insects, in order to try to force them to like bugs.
This is not the behavior of a gentleman, nor a pure sweet babey boy who can do no wrong. This is the behavior of a character who has flaws and anger issues that go unaddressed, not just by the fandom, but by the game's writing as well. For instance, while Gonta apologizes for the cast for getting tricked by Kokichi, he doesn't apologize for assaulting them with insects, kidnapping them, or attacking them.
And that's not even mentioning Chapter 4. Honestly, the decision to erase Gonta's memory of his crime just serves as a super manipulative move on the part of the writers. He was fully aware and in control of himself when he killed Miu. But because that could tarnish the player's view of him being the gentle sweetheart who they must feel sorry for, they instead opted to erase his memory and have him cry and say "he doesn't know" for pretty much the entire trial. Just to try and tug at the player's heartstrings and make you feel bad for him when he dies.
In short, despite my hatred towards Gonta, I cannot stand how both V3's writing and its fanbase treat him. Which is something that, at the very least, I feel we can both agree on.

PSA: Do NOT join this server
I tried joining the server today. Everyone was really happy at first when I showed up. Managed to fill out an app for Ryoma, and received full marks on their ratings system.
Before I even got the chance to rp, I found myself banned from the server. Turns out, there were people in it who held a grudge against me for things that happened well over a year ago, and some of the members straight-up told me to unalive myself.
For further context on the things that happened over a year ago, I joined a series of Danganronpa rp servers that was run by a group of some of the same mods. However, they kept on deleting the servers, oftentimes without any warning. I expressed frustration over this, asking why they couldn't have just handed the owner or mod roles over to someone else rather than deleting the entire servers if they didn't want to be in charge of them anymore.
Admittedly, things escalated from there. My temper got the better of me, and I wound up calling the mods incompetent as well as swearing at them before leaving the last soon-to-be-deleted-server I shared with them. It was wrong of me to do this, and I truly am sorry for that. However, I don't think that this warranted a ban from a completely unrelated server, and I especially don't think this warranted people from that server telling me to unalive myself.
For your own safety, I do not recommend joining. If you do decide to join, just keep my warning in mind. Stay safe.
