Lisa Montgomery, 36, often pretended she was pregnant to gain advantage in her interpersonal relations. In 2004, she told her friends, family, and husband that she was expecting. She even told her ex-husband. However, in 1990, Montgomery underwent a tubal ligation and was unable to have any more children. Due to her repeated lies and deceptions, Montgomery’s ex-husband threatened to expose her lies and gain custody of their children.

Nevertheless, Montgomery continued to claim she was pregnant for she had a grim plan. Montgomery had found out that 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett was 8 months pregnant. Stinnett ran a dog breeding business from her home and Montgomery contacted her via a rat terrier chat room. Montgomery told Stinnett that she too was expecting a baby and the two exchanged emails. On the 16th of December, 2004, Montgomery travelled to Stinnett’s home in Skidmore, Missouri, under the pretence that she wanted to buy a rat terrier from her. In reality, however, Montgomery was there for a more gruesome purpose.

When Montgomery arrived at Stinnett’s door, the expectant mother opened the door with open arms. Once inside, Montgomery turned on Stinnett. She strangled her to death and sliced open her abdomen and removed her 8-month-old fetus before fleeing the scene. Stinnett’s mother, Becky Harper, found her daughter’s body at around 3PM. Harper said the wounds inflicted on her daughter appeared as though her “stomach had exploded.” Attempts by paramedics on the scene to revive Stinnett were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital.

Montgomery was easily identified as a suspect due to the internet correspondence the two had been having. Following the murder, Montgomery had returned to her hometown of Melvern, Kansas, and had been showing the baby girl off as her own. She had even presented the baby to her husband and claimed she had given birth while he was at work. The very next day, Montgomery was apprehended and the baby was returned to her father and Stinnett’s husband, Zeb Stinnett.

During Montgomery’s trial, her defence argued that she should receive leniency due to her troubled childhood. Montgomery’s stepfather sexually abused her while her mother emotionally abused her. Prosecutors argued that tens of thousands of children are abused but don’t go on to kill. The jury sided with the prosecution and Montgomery was found guilty and sentenced to death.

In October of 2020, Lisa Montgomery was scheduled to be executed. She is due to die on the 8th of December, 2020. She will be the first federal female inmate to be executed in almost 70 years.

A Party Turns into a Frustrating Mystery

First a disclaimer: This case is so little known that I couldn’t find any picture of the victims, so I had to go for a generic hand.

Heather Halseth (15) was murdered in Milwaukee, on her way home after a wild party on June 9th, 1979. She was sexually assaulted and suffocated with dirt shoved into her mouth.

Soon after her body was found, two things happened:

1) Police arrested a 15 year old who had been at the same party as Heather for the murder. He failed a polygraph and charges were pressed against him. His name was never disclosed, so we’ll call him Accused.

2) Three days after Heather’s body was found, an anonymous call told police to investigate another 15 year old, not Accused, and said they would find muddy and bloodstained clothes in his basement. They did find clothes, but the mud didn’t match the one in the crime scene. Still, this boy that we’ll call Muddy, took a polygraph and he failed it too.

Authorities decided to leave Muddy be and went ahead with the prosecution of Accused. In October of 1979, he was acquitted of all charges. The star witness of the defense was Jay Flom, an 18 year old who was also at the party and testified that Accused was still there at the time Heather was attacked.

Now is when things get weirder.

Soon after the trial ended, Jay Flom disappeared. He was found a day after, dead. His nude body was laying in a ditch, with two shots in the head. There were no signs of struggle or that he’d been dragged there.

But get this. The same day Jay Flom vanished, Muddy’s parents reported their son missing. The report was withdrawn two days later, so I assume Muddy was found. Still, isn’t it an odd coincidence? Almost as much as the fact that both Heather and Jay were murdered and police has never been able to connect both crimes.

There are more strange details in this case. Accused’s lawyer received a theatening phone call telling him not to look into Jay’s murder. There’s some evidence that Jay might be the one who made the anonymous call pointing to Muddy. And some witnesses claimed that they had seen Jay the night he disappeared with at least one person who had been in that June party.

The most infuriating part of this story, is that there are no more developments after that. I couldn’t find any more articles about this investigation. If anyone stumbles into more information, please let me know.

I found this so interesting, so I started to look for a bit of information. I found an articule, it could be irrelevant but it caught my atenttion some how:

Oh my God this actually explains so much.

So there’s a known thing in the study of human psychology/sociology/what-have-you where men are known to, on average, rely entirely on their female romantic partner for emotional support. Bonding with other men is done at a more superficial level involving fun group activities and conversations about general subjects but rarely involves actually leaning on other men or being really honest about emotional problems. Men use alcohol to be able to lower their inhibitions enough to expose themselves emotionally to other men, but if you can’t get emotional support unless you’re drunk, you have a problem.

So men need to have a woman in their lives to have anyone they can share their emotional needs and vulnerabilities with. However, since women are not socialized to fear sharing these things, women’s friendships with other women are heavily based on emotional support. If you can’t lean on her when you’re weak, she’s not your friend. To women, what friendship is is someone who listens to all your problems and keeps you company.

So this disconnect men are suffering from is that they think that only a person who is having sex with you will share their emotions and expect support. That’s what a romantic partner does. But women think that’s what a friend does. So women do it for their romantic partners and their friends and expect a male friend to do it for them the same as a female friend would. This fools the male friend into thinking there must be something romantic there when there is not.

This here is an example of patriarchy hurting everyone. Women have a much healthier approach to emotional support – they don’t die when widowed at nearly the rate that widowers die and they don’t suffer emotionally from divorce nearly as much even though they suffer much more financially, and this is because women don’t put all their emotional needs on one person. Women have a support network of other women. But men are trained to never share their emotions except with their wife or girlfriend, because that isn’t manly. So when she dies or leaves them, they have no one to turn to to help with the grief, causing higher rates of death, depression, alcoholism and general awfulness upon losing a romantic partner. 

So men suffer terribly from being trained in this way. But women suffer in that they can’t reach out to male friends for basic friendship. I am not sure any man can comprehend how heartbreaking it is to realize that a guy you thought was your friend was really just trying to get into your pants. Friendship is real. It’s emotional, it’s important to us. We lean on our friends. Knowing that your friend was secretly seething with resentment when you were opening up to him and sharing your problems because he felt like he shouldn’t have to do that kind of emotional work for anyone not having sex with him, and he felt used by you for that reason, is horrible. And the fact that men can’t share emotional needs with other men means that lots of men who can’t get a girlfriend end up turning into horrible misogynistic people who think the world owes them the love of a woman, like it’s a commodity… because no one will die without sex. Masturbation exists. But people will die or suffer deep emotional trauma from having no one they can lean on emotionally. And men who are suffering deep emotional trauma, and have been trained to channel their personal trauma into rage because they can’t share it, become mass shooters, or rapists, or simply horrible misogynists.

The only way to fix this is to teach boys it’s okay to love your friends. It’s okay to share your needs and your problems with your friends. It’s okay to lean on your friends, to hug your friends, to be weak with your friends. Only if this is okay for boys to do with their male friends can this problem be resolved… so men, this one’s on you. Women can’t fix this for you; you don’t listen to us about matters of what it means to be a man. Fix your own shit and teach your brothers and sons and friends that this is okay, or everyone suffers.

Barbara Graham, along with Jack Santo, Emmett Perkins, John True and Baxter Shorter, forced their way into the widows home, believing she had a large sum of money. Mabel was suffocated with a pillow and the gang left empty-handed. Barbara Graham and her accomplices were all sentenced to death.
