This blog is mainly about jellies, but I will post really anything about marine biology, because I love it so much and I want to share it! I'm not really expecting anything to come out of this blog, this is really just for fun :3

Phyllodesmium poindimiei

Class: Gastropoda (which includes slugs and snails) Dimensions Size: Grows up to 50 millimeters (2 inches) long. Weight: No specific information is available, but like all nudibranchs, it is a very lightweight animal.  Lifespan Up to one year: A typical lifespan for many nudibranchs, including P. poindimiei, is around 12 months. 

Colorful cerata: The vibrant, pink, finger-like appendages on its back are called cerata. These are extensions of its respiratory and digestive systems and are used for defense. Camouflage artist: This species is known for its incredible mimicry, allowing it to blend in with its prey, soft corals. The coloration of its cerata comes from the pink digestive glands inside them. Solar-power exception: Unlike some other nudibranchs in its genus, P. poindimiei is not "solar-powered." Many of its relatives are able to steal and use the photosynthetic algae (zooxanthellae) from their coral prey. This species, however, lacks that ability. Coral connection: The presence and evolution of this nudibranch are linked to the health of the coral reefs it inhabits. This makes it a potential indicator species for studying climate change, as the nudibranch population could be affected by changes in the coral ecosystem.

The Spanish Shawl!!!!

Size Length: The Spanish shawl grows up to 2.75 inches (7 cm) long.  Weight Specific weight information is not available for this individual species, though nudibranchs generally can weigh up to 3.3 pounds, depending on the species.  Lifespan The lifespan is short, typically a few months to one year. The Spanish shawl has a vibrant appearance, with a purple body, bright orange appendages (cerata) on its back, and scarlet-red sensory tentacles (rhinophores). The purple, red, and orange colors all come from a single pigment called astaxanthin, which the nudibranch absorbs from its prey. The nudibranch's vivid colors serve as a warning to predators that it is poisonous or distasteful. It eats hydroids, which are related to jellyfish and corals. The Spanish shawl steals the stinging cells from its prey and stores them in the tips of its cerata for its own defense. Unlike many nudibranchs that crawl on the seafloor, the Spanish shawl can swim. By flexing its body back and forth, it can gracefully move through the water. Like many nudibranchs, Spanish shawls are hermaphrodites, possessing both male and female reproductive organs.

Sea Bunnies!!!!!! (not actually a jellyfish but they're so cute omfg i just had to) ₍ᐢ. .ᐢ₎ ₊˚⊹♡

Class: Gastropoda Weight: Information on the exact weight of a sea bunny is not specified, but they are extremely small and light. Size: The sea bunny typically grows to less than 1 inch (about 2.5 centimeters) in length. Lifespan: The lifespan of a sea bunny is very short, typically ranging from a few months to one year Sea bunnies are toxic to predators. They absorb the toxins from the sponges they eat and store them in their bodies for protection. They're small nudibranch sea slug-type things with no shell. Like other nudibranchs, sea bunnies are hermaphrodites, meaning each individual has both male and female reproductive organs. When they mate, they both exchange sperm. They can be found throughout the Indo-Pacific Ocean, but are so small and camouflaged that they are very hard to spot. While the white, spotted version is the most famous, sea bunnies also come in different colors, such as yellow or orange. The fluffy rhinophores on their heads have a large surface area to help them detect chemical scents in the water, which allows them to find food and mates over large distances. The "furry" look comes from tiny rods called caryophyllidia that cover its body, while the "ears" are chemical-sensing organs called rhinophores. The "tail" is actually its gills. ITS SO CUTE I CANT

Lion's Mane Jellyfish . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁ ⟡

Cyanea capillata

Class: Scyphozoa, the class of "true" jellyfish. Size Bell: The bell of the largest recorded specimen measured 7 feet 6 inches (2.3 meters) in diameter. Tentacles: This same individual had tentacles that stretched up to 121.4 feet (37 meters) long, making it potentially the longest animal in the world. Weight While an exact weight for the largest individuals is not recorded, they can reach up to 440 pounds (200 kg). Lifespan The lifespan of a jellyfish varies widely by species. For the Lion's Mane, which is often found in colder waters, the life cycle is completed in about a year. Cyanea capillata is the largest known species of jellyfish and may be the longest animal in the world. Its name comes from the appearance of its numerous long, reddish tentacles, which resemble a lion's mane. Like most jellyfish, the Lion's Mane is primarily a passive drifter, moving with ocean currents. Although it can deliver a moderately painful sting, it is rarely fatal to humans.  It prefers the cold, boreal waters of the Arctic, North Atlantic, and North Pacific Oceans.

Today's jelly: Pacific Sea Nettle

Scientific Name: Chrysaora Fuscensens

Class: Scyphozoa Size: Bell diameter: up to 30 cm (1 ft). Oral arms: up to 3.6–4.6 m (12–15 ft). Weight: An average jellyfish weighs 4 to 5 pounds, but the Pacific sea nettle's specific weight varies. It typically lives for about 6 months to 1 year in the wild. In protected environments, such as aquariums, they can live longer, sometimes reaching up to 18 months due to the absence of predators and a steady food supply. The genus name Chrysaora is derived from Greek mythology. Chrysaor was a giant, the son of Poseidon and Medusa. The stinging cells on its long tentacles paralyze prey, which can include smaller jellyfish. Juvenile crabs sometimes hitch rides on sea nettles, using them as transportation to get closer to shore. Though painful, its sting is not typically dangerous to humans unless they have an allergy. i chose it because its basic but pwetty :3

Today's jelly is... The Cauliflower Jelly! °❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:･

scientific name: Cephea Cephea class: scyphozoa (true jelly) size: The bell of the cauliflower jellyfish can grow to a diameter of up to 24 in, tho some people have seen it much smaller... weight: n/a lifespan: typically short, 3 to 6 months lol The species gets its common name from the cauliflower-like, wart-like protrusions on top of its bell. The venom of the cauliflower jelly is very toxic to its prey, but is not considered harmful to humans. In Japan and China, this species is considered a delicacy and is consumed as food. The jelltfish is known to be bioluminescent, meaning it can produce its own light. During the daytime, it resides in deeper waters, migrating to the surface at night

highest number possible -> It's hard to really tell, (most things just say 4) but i think you're right. At least, the highest number ever observed was six. however, there could be more...! you never know... reproductive viability -> For sexual reproduction to occur, males release sperm into the water, which is then ingested by females to fertilize their eggs. The number of gonads doesn't affect this process, but reproduction can be affected by things like temp, enviroment, etc etc x3

Today's jelly: Moon Jelly ⋆.˚ ☾⭒.˚

Aurelia aurita

Class: Scyphozoa. Also known as the "true jellyfish". Size (Bell Diameter): Wild: Up to 16 inches (40 cm) in diameter. Captivity: Typically grow to about 2 to 3 inches (5–8 cm) in home aquariums. Weight: Moon jellyfish weight varies significantly, as their bodies are 95% water. Adult Aurelia aurita may weigh between 0.005 and 0.07 pounds (0.002 and 0.03 kg). Lifespan: Wild: The adult stage (medusa) lives for about 8 to 12 months and typically dies at the end of the summer season. Captivity: With optimal care, they can live for 1 to 2 years. The gonads are the four distinctive horseshoe-shaped rings that are visible through the top of the jellyfish's translucent bell. The color of the gonads can vary based on the jellyfish's diet. In sexually mature females, they are typically pink, while in males they are usually white or purple. The presence of more or fewer than four gonads is likely the result of a random genetic mutation that occurred during the jellyfish's life cycle, potentially during the polyp or larval stages. Furthermore, recent molecular research has revealed that the "moon jellyfish" is not a single species but a complex of at least 13 different species with subtle genetic and morphological differences. I just found your blog today but I’m a huge jellyfish fan! Did you know that the 4 leaf clover looking part of the moon jellies are their gonads?!? There are fairly common mutations that give them more or less than 4, so my question is what is the highest number possible and does this change reproductive viability? I found this one with 6. I need more information plz

Today's jelly is... The egg yolk jelly!!

class: scyphozoa (see a theme here?) size: the bell -> 2 ft tentacles -> 20 ft  weight: n/a lifespan: this jelly can live up to a couple years It is primarily a drifting predator, ambushing its prey of zooplankton and smaller jellies with its sticky tentacles. It is also known to host symbiotic crabs, amphipods, and juvenile fish on and around its bell. This jelly is found in cooler, temperate ocean waters worldwide, including the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. Its sting is mild and is not considered a significant threat to humans. I chose it bc its so dang cute <3

birthday special!! ⋆౨ৎ˚⟡˖ ࣪ today's my little sister's birthday! for her, i'm doing a special on the pink meanie <3

scientific name: Drymonema larsoni

class: scyphozoa size: up to 70 ft long, 3 feet wide weight: up to 50 lbs lifespan: a couple of months the pink meanie actually feeds off of moon jellies, and dies of when prey is scarce. It has a distinct pinkish hue, which has led to descriptions of it as "floating cotton candy". It tends to lose this vibrant coloration once it washes ashore. I chose this bc it describes my sister perfectly <3
