“Of course I’m joking,” Dahlia chuckled. “But still, ducking is vital in here. Tech is faulty.” She raised a brow. “You’ve been at this longer than I have, has this never happened before?”

“Never is a strong word.” She rubbed her sweaty palms against her training uniform. “Stray arrows, misplaced axes,” a shrug, “accidents happen but they tend to stay on that section of the center.”

He was just leaving Marino to train on his own – or at least, without him, for this room drained all the good energies from him – when the knife flew a little over both their heads, he didn’t look back. It wasn’t Hunter’s habit even back in the arena. Instead, he gave out an indulgent simper and walked towards the second target. “Sorry, it was just my tribute basically showing so much promise that he’s almost killing earlier Victors too. Can’t argue with natural talent… or the lack of it, for that matter.” He shrugged, not knowing how to phrase actual apologies. “Don’t go hard on him. He might die anyway very soon…”

She took a moment to catch her breath before answering the fellow victor. “We have different definitions of promise, Twill.” The thump of her heartbeat was almost deafening in her ears, but she ignored it, placing a steadying hand against her stomach. Unlike some victors, she hadn’t pursued any type of fighting skills after her arena. That was better left to the trainers that had natural talent for it. “It’s funny how the sponsor’s shield never seems to glitch but ours keeps on going down.”

Diana had been through the doors the moment they opened. She practically lived at the Academy back home, here would be no different. Besides, this was where she would be able to get an idea of who her competition actually was. She stood before a row of human size targets, bow in hand, quiver of arrows at her side. 

Stringing the arrow up, she lined it up with one of the targets before letting it loose. The arrow landed with a thud right where the femoral artery would have been. A small smile spread across her lips, lowering the bow to look around. she noticed someone watching her and raised a brow. “Know how to use one?” She asked, reaching for another arrow.

She shook her head. She’d been watching the girl from one from the sidelines, her curiosity brimming from more than just the angle of gaining advantages for her tributes. If her tributes went down she could be useful with sponsors and victors from other districts.

“I never was interested honestly,” she said. After her games she had never wanted to be involved in another battle again. “This part’s always better with the trainers.”

“the careers haven’t dared to come near me yet,” nova countered, shooting a look over to the axe station. “if you don’t want me to teach your tribute how to survive and have a chance of getting out of this mess, then i won’t,” she purred, her voice smooth as her anger faded into a sense of control.

“If this,” her arms spread wide, “is what you consider teaching then no I don’t want them having any part in it. The least you could do is hold in your temper. They don’t have as much time as you, so stop making what they have left a living hell.” Her face tightened. “That’s supposed to be the capitol’s job.”

“Sorry!” Delta scurried after her stray knife, just past the woman she’d nearly impaled without much real remorse. She was fine, wasn’t she? Delta had been practicing constantly since Kai had started coaching her on it, but she still didn’t have a very reliable aim. Yanking it out of the wall, she couldn’t help but smugly survey the drywall that came up with it. It might have been… well, way off target, but it had much more of an impact than she’d expected.

She was still catching her breath when the tribute, she recognized her as one of Kai’s, came running after the waylaid knife. She couldn’t be angry over an accident, especially when the tech was supposed to protect against it, but her skin still crawled with adrenaline. “Next time maybe check that the systems running before you start throwing,” she said. “Wouldn’t want to go around making enemies.”

Oops… So, touchy subject. She held her hands up as if in innocence. “Well there’s your first problem,” she said. “Twelve could win any year. You won! It’s not a funeral until, you know– the bodies are in the coffins.” She shrugged; the subject wasn’t particularly dark to her.

“True,” she conceded, hands slipping into her pockets. She very much doubted it however with the current state of her tributes. “But it wasn’t really their funerals I was referencing.”

“Mm, right, the whole – doom and gloom thing everyone else has going? Not my scene.” She shook her head. She recognized the woman. One thing she might have above other tributes: a near-encyclopedic knowledge of the Games and their history. “I guess that might be more what you’re used to though, in Twelve.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly, crossing her arms as the tribute spoke. “Absolutely,” she said. Let the girl think what she wanted. She knew nothing she said would convince her otherwise. Her lips curved upward in a sharp and false smile. “Back home we wouldn’t even consider dancing our way to a funeral.”

Dahlia crossed her arms in front of her chest and shook her head with a sigh. She was yet to see good knife throwing. If anyone had managed it, she must’ve missed it. “It’s been like this all day. After a while, you learn to duck.” The last part was a joke, but in Daisy’s situation, maybe less so. 

“This is what force fields are for.” Anger bled into her tone as she looked over to the control wall and then glared at the tribute slinking off toward it. She paused for a moment before turning to the escort. “You’re joking right? They haven’t been just using passerby as target practice?”

“That bad?” Jules asked, raising an eyebrow. Figured. Twelve’s record was even more embarrassing than Seven’s, the tribute bodies always piling up. 

She took no effort to hide her notebook, her small and somewhat-scratchy handwriting not exactly legible to anyone more than a few feet away, but she did set it to the side. There was nothing groundbreaking in there about the tributes, but why go to all that work to help someone else? “You know, it’s starting to feel like a broken record. The Careers are bloodthirsty, District Three is smart. The outlying Districts don’t have a great shot. Maybe I should just start recycling these.” She said, motioning to the notebook. 

She nodded, sucking in her bottom lip before saying, “Bad enough that I’m considering changing my official title to undertaker.”

Jules with her notes had always intrigued her. She’d turned the idea around in her head of adopting a similar system, but eventually turned it down. Nothing her mentors could have written down for her would have helped in the arena. Only her gut was trustworthy in there. “And the capitol is ignorant,” she added. “Maybe we could foster something between our tributes. A little extra strength in numbers.”

Auri exchanged a glance with the nervous tribute from which the dagger had flown. “Sorry, they’re one of mine,” She said, motioning to the tribute who’d since gone back to their training. “I’m not sure, but I have a feeling the tech person doesn’t know they’re on tech either. If it makes you feel any better, I don’t think they could have hit you even if they’d been aiming for you.”

“Doesn’t help much honestly.” She shook her hands out to discharge some of the latent energy building up in her bones. She needed a smoke and some fresh air, but she shouldn’t be ducking out on her pair of tributes. “Even the fools who couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn can still get unlucky.”

Chip had his earphones on, blasting music so he could ignore the clashing and crashing going on all around the training center. He caught sight of his tribute just in time to see them miss a victor’s face by inches. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding,” he muttered to himself as he moved closer, pulling his earphones off just in time to hear the woman’s question. He shrugged as he watched his tribute run off to hide behind a boxing bag. “N-not m-me,” Chip said. Over the years, he’d found his way around the place - against the maintenance team’s wishes. “No fi-field?”

She stayed slightly crouched longer than was needed, rubbing her sweaty palms against the knees of her nylon training clothes. She could taste the panic on her tongue, but she swallowed it down. She wasn’t in an arena here. This was just typical game mishaps. “Maybe you should be.” Her voice was thinner than she would have liked. She took another breath. The tribute who’d thrown the knife was hiding behind a boxing bag. “This from one of yours Chip?”

“Sorry about that,” Marino apologized as he dislodged the knife from the wall. Sure, his aim wasn’t the best, but he felt somewhat impressed with himself that it almost made contact. He shrugged sheepishly and hoped that he hadn’t gotten on the mentor’s bad side. Best not to piss off anymore people before the Games had even started. “I wouldn’t stand here, if I were you. Not unless you want to be used for target practice.”

Her heart thrummed a beat in her throat making her vision tunnel for a long moment. It’d been fourteen years but in moments like this she felt like the arena lived in her bones. She brushed her hair away from her face, taking a few breaths to steady herself. “Wasn’t planning to,” she said, her voice tight and short. “You should double check the shields before practice kid. They have them for a reason.”

she stepped back as daisy came between her and the tribute, it lit a spark in her eyes. she was not just gonna let this go now. “i don’t tell you you look like an idiot losing these damn kids every year, do not tell me i look like an idiot when i’m doing my job,” nova snapped back, her head held high.

“Maybe I’m behind the times here but I’m pretty sure the job description for a trainer doesn’t include verbally abusing my tribute.” She pushed the hair back from her face, the anger there evident but held tightly under wraps. She couldn’t give her pair the promise of a victory but she could at the very least turn away this. “You want to yell at someone I’m sure I saw a pair of careers lurking around the axes.”

“What the -” Daisy ducked as a knife went whizzing past her head and embedded in the wall behind her. The throw was off by several inches even without her intervention, but that didn’t keep her heart from leaping into her throat. She’d been walking from one station to the next in the training center, putting little mind to the tributes taking turns with throwing daggers. Accidents like this happened, but typically with the less experience crew force fields were used to prevent close calls. “Seriously, who the hell is on tech in here?”
