Also Tim Burton seems to have fundamentally misunderstood what makes the Addams Family work as a concept. See, I knew that this show was going to be about an older Wednesday in high school, but I assumed it would be a normal high school. In fact I got a little excited at the beginning of the trailer because the school was named after Nancy Reagan, which made me think they were going to bring back the satirical elements from the 60s TV show. But no. As it turns out, that’s not the high school the show will be focusing on. It’s actually the Nevermore Academy, which is just as dark and weird as the Addams Family… and I HATE that!
The reason the Addams Family works is because they’re the odd ones out. The comedy comes from seeing a typical suburban conservative Christian neighbourhood reacting to the gothic strangeness of the Addams Family, the irony being that the Addams Family are the ones that are well adjusted and happy because they’re perfectly content with who they are, unlike their neighbours who are constantly concerned with their own social status. If everyone is like the Addams Family… where’s the joke? The premise no longer works.
It seems like Tim Burton just wanted an excuse to do his usual quirky gothic aesthetic without stopping to consider that it only works in contrast with the white picket fence neighbourhood the Addams Family inhabit. 🤦🏻♂️
