“Are you really upset over this? After everything?” is what Yunho asks annoyed while
pulling at his hair from the roots, looking into Mingi’s eyes in disbelief.
Mingi freezes. Yunho raised his voice at him for the first time in forever, and he looked mad. Mingi’s whole body goes limp, losing feeling in his entire body, tears welling up in
his eyes, the only feeling he had was that his heart hurt so much, as if someone got
their hand on it and were squeezing it dry of everything and anything. Mingi wanted to
leave the room, he felt in danger and he felt unwanted and unneeded, but at the same
time he felt stuck, like his feet were glued to the ground and couldn't leave no matter
how bad he wanted to.
Yunho sighs helplessly as he sees Mingi’s scared expression. Yunho’s hands fall from
his hair and hit his thighs loudly. “What do you want me to do, Mingi? What do you
need? Talk to me.” Yunho slowly approaches Mingi after he takes a few breaths in,
trying to calm himself down. Yunho brings his hands to the back of Mingi’s head and
brings their foreheads together, looking into Mingi’s eyes, desperately trying to read
them, and undertsand whatever was going on in his friend's head, what were his
thoughts actually. “Please, be honest.”
Mingi can see in Yunho’s eyes how he’s starting to give up on him. How he’s starting to
become tired of all of it.
*
The long dreaded day was finally here. Well, almost here. It was gonna be tomorrow.
The in-person audition, and as far as they knew, the final stage before officially
becoming KQ trainees. The two of them got called to settle a date for the audition a few
hours apart and managed to get the same audition day so they could go together. They
would’ve went together regardless for moral support, but this saved them a trip.
Three weeks have passed since Yunho and Mingi had the sleepover. Three weeks
since Mingi last showed so much vulnerability in front of his friend, something that he
still feels guilty about, as he is under the impression that he just burdened his friend with
his thoughts, but Yunho has been so understanding and tried being exactly what Mingi
needed in every moment of the day.
Mingi’s nightmares started dying down again, sometimes even managing to get a full
night of uninterrupted sleep. Things were finally starting to look up and Mingi dared to
feel hopeful.
“I’m outside.” is the text message Mingi receives from Yunho. Mingi grabs his backpack
and rushes outside, bumping his arm on Yunho’s and starting their way towards the
dance studio they rented for the day. Since they got the call back from the agency
they’ve been practicing nearly every day together, mainly renting whatever dance studio
they found available for a few hours and perfecting their dances and working on
everything they prepared for the audition.
“Excited? Nervous?” asks Yunho while he had his hands stuffed in the pockets of his
jacket. It was the middle of October and the cold was approaching rapidly.
“It still hasn’t settled in. Ask me tomorrow morning.” is Mingi’s reply to which Yunho
chuckles. In theory, Mingi knows that tomorrow he will have the audition, but it doesn’t
feel like it. In his brain, it hasn’t quite registered. He knows he’s practising, and he knows
for what, but it feels unreal. “How are you feeling?” asks Mingi in return.
“Excited. Scared. Doubtful. Glad it will finally be over. Can’t wait for it to begin.” states
Yunho all emotions he was feeling in the moment, to which Mingi chuckles in return. “I
just hope that what I’ve prepared all this time will be enough.” continues Yunho, looking
at the ground, Mingi being able to hear a tinge of insecurity in his friend’s voice.
“What you prepared is enough and well executed. It’s not always about how much you
prepare. They just asked for a song and a dance performance, which is exactly what
you prepared and what you’ve been perfecting all these weeks. Don’t get too much in
your head now. Just try to see it as any other practice.” tries Mingi to ease Yunho’s mind.
In Mingi’s eyes, Yunho had nothing to worry about, he understands why he worries, but
he knows to his very core that things will work out great for him, because that’s what he
deserves.
“You’re right. I will make the most of it.” replies Yunho and then nods, evidently being
deep in thought, which Mingi respects and doesn’t say anything else.
They enter the building, and after talking to the person in charge, they are handed the
keys to their studio, and so the last day of practice before the audition begins. Both of
them with their headphones on and practising their choreographies, Yunho sometimes
taking singing breaks, which required Mingi’s supervision and opinion.
And it's been hours. They've been practising tirelessly for the past six hours with short
water and snack breaks in between, but they were quickly reaching the end of their time
to use the studio. Mingi was gathering his and Yunho’s things while Yunho continued
practising, stuck in his own world, his hair glued to his forehead and his white baggy
shirt sticking to his torso due to the sweat.
Mingi still with his earphones in, mouthing the words to the rap song he chose, so he
didn’t notice at first when Yunho fell, however when he saw that he wasn’t getting up
and was bent over his ankle, he realized something was wrong, so he quickly took off
his headphones and hurried to his friend, kneeling next to him.
“What happened?” asks Mingi, however he doesn’t get an answer for a minute. Yunho
just rests his head on his knee and takes deep breaths in, trying to steady himself.
“Help me stand up, please.” replies Yunho and Mingi quickly stands up and gives him a
hand. Yunho quickly takes it, and he’s dragged upwards. Yunho tries to fully step on his
injured leg but winces in pain, so he slightly bends it to not put too much weight on it,
laughing annoyed.
“I twisted my ankle.” simply says Yunho with annoyance laced in his voice. “I messed up
the choreo, I overdid it. I knew I was tired, I knew I should’ve stopped, but decided to
practice it once more anyway and twisted my ankle. I fucked up.” continues Yunho while
looking down at his injured ankle, spitting out the words annoyed.
It is just a twisted ankle. It does have an easy healing process, and it could’ve been so
much worse, but the timing is completely inconvenient. If this were Mingi, he would’ve
interpreted it as another sign that he is not fit to become a trainee, however this is
Yunho, and he deserved the recognition and praise that came with becoming a trainee
and eventually debuting. Hell, he deserved the stars on the sky, and Mingi would have
given them to him if he could.
“Let’s get you home and take care of it as best as possible. It won’t be fixed by
tomorrow, but maybe they will understand and let you have the audition another time, or
at least have the vocal audition tomorrow and dance another time once it heals.” says
Mingi after analyzing his friend’s situation, but knowing Yunho will most likely show up to
tomorrow’s audition and perform with his ankle as it is.
Yunho looks at himself in the mirror wall and bites his bottom lip, chewing on it while
analyzing the options provided by his friend. He finally nods and puts one of his arms
around Mingi’s shoulders to make it easier for him to walk. Mingi takes their backpacksand makes their way outside the studio and towards Yunho’s house. Yunho insisted it
wasn’t necessary for Mingi to walk him home, but Mingi insisted, and Yunho just ended
up accepting his help, given he had no other choice and knowing how stubborn can
Mingi be.
Their way to Yunho’s house was quiet. It was obvious to Mingi that his friend spent the
entire time weighing his options, so he didn’t want to disturb him.
“Are you going tomorrow still?” asks Mingi as they stop in front of Yunho’s house.
“I have to, Mingi.” Yunho sighs and leans on Mingi a bit more, leaving as little weight as
possible on his injured ankle. “A twisted ankle is not an excuse. And if I were to make it
an excuse, they would end up thinking I'm not trying hard enough. A twisted ankle
doesn’t stop idols, and if I let it stop me, it would mean that I wouldn’t be a good enough
idol. I will be fine. I will just go through with the audition tomorrow and let them know that I
twisted my ankle and take proper care of it from tomorrow on.” continues Yunho.
Mingi knew his friend wasn’t gonna change his mind, so he just nods and holds on to
Yunho’s hand a little tighter.
“Then… See you tomorrow morning? I will come pick you up this time.” asks Mingi with
a crooked smile, trying to get a smile out of Yunho as well, which to some extent works,
as Yunho manages to force a tired smile on his lips. “Sure. Thank you for walking me
home, Mingi. Be careful on your way back. See you tomorrow.” replies Yunho and
enters his house, leaving Mingi alone.
“Please show yourself the patience and understanding you show me on a daily.”
whispers Mingi to himself after he takes one final look at Yunho’s house and then starts
making his way to his house.
---
Mingi woke up this morning an hour earlier than he usually would’ve if Yunho were to
pick him up since Yunho’s house is a bit out of the way and far from the KQ building.
He quickly showered and got dressed, and after he packed up his backpack and made
sure he got everything, he sent a text to Yunho, letting him know that he just left his
house and was on his way.
Mingi didn’t feel prepared at all. The rap song he settled on was picked a few days
earlier since he decided against showing up with something he wrote, but he felt
confident enough in his dance. However he’s not nearly as prepared as Yunho is.
"I’m outside.” sends Mingi the text and leans his back against the stone wall in front of
Yunho’s house. Yunho's front door opens wide and then he is seen sitting in the door
frame, slightly leaning on the frame with his shoulder, waiting for Mingi to see him. Mingi
quickly approaches him to offer Yunho support to lean on him, which Yunho is quick to
accept.
“How are you feeling?” asks Mingi once Yunho locks the door and then they start walking towards
the subway station, which in on itself is a pretty long walk.
“My ankle is a bit swollen, and I can not move it at all without it hurting, but I will have to
make it work.” is Yunho’s reply as he adjusts his arm around Mingi’s shoulders. “You?
Has the fact that today’s the audition settled in yet?” asks Yunho in return as he gives
Mingi a quick glance and a small smile, recalling the question he initially asked the day
before.
Mingi lets his eyes wander around for a bit, as if looking for the exact things he was
feeling, hoping that he could say he was excited or nervous, which to some extent he
was, but more than anything he wanted to get it over with. “Yeah it has, but I’m not too
worried. I’m worried about you and your ankle more.”
“No need, it will heal quick after today. I just wanna secure my spot as a trainee together
with you.”
Mingi nods and doesn’t say anything back. As good as Yunho may be at hiding his true
feelings in certain situations, it was clear to Mingi that he was extremely worried about
today, more worried than he’d like to admit, but Mingi decided against addressing it. For
Yunho’s sake.
---
Mingi was waiting outside the KQ building for Yunho to get out. Mingi was called in for
his audition before Yunho, and once it was over he wanted to leave the building, needing
some air to clear his head and cool himself down a bit.
The audition went better than expected, even though they didn’t say anything regarding
if he got accepted or not, the people that he performed in front of didn’t look particularly
displeased with neither his rapping or dancing.
The entire time he performed, his head was filled with worries and concerns for Yunho.
He was trying to read to the best of his capabilities the people in front of him, trying to
deduce if they would be understanding of Yunho’s situation or still expecting of him to perform perfectly. To Mingi, they seemed like decent people who could see Yunho’s
potential that was locked behind a twisted ankle.
Before the performance, he was asked a few questions, such as ‘why did you choose our
company? what would you say are your strongest and weakest points? what do you
want to improve regarding your performance? when did you start dancing?’ and many
more similar questions, to which he tried to be as honest as possible while also making
the answers sound like some of a trainee’s they’d like having.
“Dance has been a hobby of mine since I was younger, and when I was told about the
possibility of making my hobby a job, I decided that becoming an idol will be my dream.
Being able to combine work with fun sounds like the best possible scenario.” is what
Mingi actually said, even though he wished he could’ve said the truth. That he promised
his best friend they would debut together, and the thought of letting him down killed him to
his very core.
Mingi was anxiously biting his nails while waiting for his friend, trying to busy his mind
but finding it impossible to do so, knowing the two ways Yunho’s audition could go.
As if being heard by a higher being, Yunho limps outside the KQ building. Upon
seeing him, Mingi rushes towards his friend and looks at him, filled with anxiety, unable
to read his friend’s expression.
Yunho cracks into a huge smile that relieves Mingi. “What are you looking so scared
for, Mingi?” Yunho teases, seeing as all worry drains from Mingi’s face. “They said they
will take into consideration the fact that I am injured, and worst case scenario, I will have
to redo the in-person audition once I’m fully healed.” continues to explain Yunho and
Mingi drags him into a hug that Yunho is quick to accept.
“You know, if I’m being honest, I was very anxious. I was expecting the worst after I told
them that my ankle is injured, but they were actually understanding and asked if I’d like
to reschedule. I didn’t go all out with performing, of course, but I still think i proved myself
despite my ankle.” says Yunho, with his voice being muffled due to his chin resting on
Mingi’s shoulder.
“Of course you did! An injured ankle can’t hide all the work you put up to this point. I’m
proud of you for still going through with the audition, and I hope it eased your mind a bit.
But now let’s get you home and take proper care of it and let it rest and heal.” says
Mingi as he ends the hug he was in, taking a step back and then positioning himself on
Yunho’s left side, putting his friend’s arm around his shoulders.
“No way! We have to celebrate with lunch!”
“Celebrate what exactly? We just held the audition.” asks Mingi, confused, furrowing his
brows. In Mingi’s mind, they had no reason to celebrate. They weren’t given a final
verdict.
“Exactly! We are one step closer to becoming trainees, Mingi! Come on, let’s get lunch!
My treat.” replies Yunho with a huge smile and starts limping forward, basically dragging
Mingi after him, while Mingi was staring at him dumbfounded. Celebrating every little
thing was such a weird concept to Mingi still. They just completed another mandatory
step in the process that is becoming a trainee. They still had no certain result, yet Yunho
saw this worthy of celebration.
---
Mingi was standing up straight in the middle of the practice room he went to on the day
before the in-person audition staring blankly at the wall in front of him, as if waiting for
something or someone. Maybe waiting for Yunho so they can start practicing.
“We are sorry, I don’t think you are fit for the vision we have for the group.” are the
words that are echoed around the empty practice room. A phrase that Mingi has gotten
used to hearing in his dreams, but something felt different this time. He was looking
around, trying to find the source of the voice, but it was pointless. He was alone.
“…What?” says a different voice, one that he knows all too well. It was Yunho’s voice.
Mingi looks around the room, much more concerned and worried. He wants to convince
the manager to rethink their decision.
“The group will continue their activity without you. We don’t think you are ready to debut
just yet while the others are fully prepared. You will debut at another time under another
group. I hope you understand that this wasn’t an easy decision to make.” fades out the
voice with every word it says and Mingi runs outside the practice room, but it doesn’t
lead him anywhere, only to a pitch black place that had a Yunho standing still, as if
deflated, hunched over a bit. Definitely not his usual cheery self.
Mingi turns around, but the door he previously came out from has vanished. Only pitch darkness was surrounding him.
Yunho notices his friend’s presence and raises his head, looking Mingi in the eye. Mingi
slowly approaches him, but with each step he made, he didn’t make any actual progress,
and Yunho seemed to remain at the same distance. So Mingi stopped walking.
“Yunho! Why can’t I reach you? Yunho! Can you hear me?” yells Mingi as he felt how
tears were stinging his eyes. He was desperate, but he knew he couldn’t reach him no
matter how fast he ran, so maybe at least his words could reach him, as it was obvious that Yunho could see him, but he didn’t seem startled by the fact that Mingi couldn’t get
to him. He actually looked relieved.
“You did it Mingi.” is all that Yunho said as a sad smile formed on his lips.
“Congratulations on your debut.” Yunho continues and then takes a step backwards,
putting more distance between him and Mingi.
“I never wanted to debut in the first place. It should be you, Yunho. You deserve it more
than anyone.” tries Mingi to justify himself, realizing that he just admitted for the first
time aloud that he didn’t want to debut.
“Does it matter? You debuted anyway. You should go celebrate.” continues Yunho, no ill
intention behind his words. “With your group, of course. I don’t want to drag you down.”
and Yunho turned his back and started walking away. Yunho, for the first time, turned
his back on Mingi.
Mingi started running towards Yunho, yelling his name and begging him to stop, to listen
to him, promising that he really didn’t want to debut, and especially he didn’t want to
debut without his best friend, but it was all in vain. Yunho was gone from Mingi’s field of
vision, but he continued in the direction that he thought was right, yelling his name until
he felt how his throat was becoming raw.
Mingi’s final sight of Yunho being how he willingly turned his back on him and walked
away.
---
Mingi wakes up once again, startled from another nightmare. He felt like crying upon
recalling too clearly the nightmare he woke up from. The loneliness he felt upon seeing
Yunho turn his back on him was something that he feared all these years, and seeing it
finally happen brought an intense sense of uneasiness upon him.
Mingi felt cold, but a cold that came from within and not one that any amount of blankets
or radiators could fix. He sits up and hugs his knees to his chest, staring blankly into
nothing as he is dissecting the dream he just had. For a brief moment, that dream
was his reality, and he continued to recall it as if it was true, as if Yunho really did leave
him and turned his back on him that easily.
“Hello Mrs. Song! Is Mingi home? I tried calling him, but he didn’t pick up.” Mingi hears
Yunho’s voice faintly coming from downstairs. In normal circumstances, he would check
his phone to see all the missed phone calls and unread messages from his friend, but
he feels like he’s stuck while still trying to make sense of the dream. Why is he getting them now? Why are they all portraying some sort of loneliness or being abandoned by
Yunho? What if these are warning signs or what if they are premonitions? He knew he
sounded insane but he couldn’t fully exclude it given how frequent this specific themes
was. Mingi’s head was flooded with a bunch of ‘what if’s.
Mingi was so deep in thought that he didn’t notice when Yunho entered his room, nor
did he hear him when he was trying to talk to him. Only when Yunho sat down beside
him did Mingi notice his presence.
Yunho didn’t say anything. He just looked worried at his friend, knowing that another
nightmares had occurred moments before he showed up. Yunho just circles Mingi’s
shoulders and pulls him in a hug that Mingi accepts without repositioning himself. Yunho
didn’t ask what the nightmare was about, and Mingi didn’t want to tell him either.

“Why did you choose to spend time with me out of everyone? It’s always been like this… You could’ve been with the others right now.” is what Mingi asked while he was laying on the grass looking at the night sky, Yunho sitting next to him, resting his arms on his knees and admiring the stars that were shining brightly. The grass was still wet from the rain that happened not too long ago and both of them knew that their clothes were dirty with mud, but neither of them cared. The air was so clear and refreshing and the grass tickling Mingi’s exposed arms were feeling extremely liberating.
Yunho turned his face to look at his friend, eventually turning his entire body and sitting crisscross next to him, scanning Mingi’s face and giving him a gentle smile. Mingi noticed as his features softened and how his eyes had a tinge of sadness that seemed to say something along the lines of ‘why would you even ask that?’.
“It was never a choice to begin with, you were just brought into my life and I couldn’t be more thankful for it, and it’s been this way ever since we met. I will always choose you over anyone else, Mingi.” is Yunho’s reply as he rips a fistful of grass-blades and throws it on Mingi’s chest, making them both laugh awkwardly. Mingi felt as his heart swelled from happiness.
*
The walk to the convenience store was silent. Mingi couldn't tell if either of them didn't talk because they had nothing to say or because Yunho was still somewhat upset, but he was too out of it to force himself to get any words out. It wasn't awkward by any means, but this time it just felt a bit more tense than usual, like he was caught doing something he shouldn’t have and was waiting to be scolded for it. It was a heavy and comfortable silence.
The convenience store was empty enough for them to eat inside of it, so after the two of them picked their items and paid for them, they sat at one of the tables and started eating, Yunho monitoring his friend’s every move.
“Can I ask you something? You don't have to answer if you don't feel like it.” says Yunho, being the first to break the silence, being already done with most of his food, still having saved a small amount of it to eat at the same time with his friend. Mingi stops mid bite of his kimbap, continuing his bite of food after swallowing the lump in his throat and chewing the food while nodding his head.
“Do you still want to debut?” asks Yunho seriously, now distracting himself with the wrapper of the plastic straw that was in his cup of juice half empty, avoiding making any eye contact with his friend, his gaze alone giving Yunho the answer before Mingi could begin to put it into words. “Because I feel like you are a bit off about the whole thing. And I don’t want you to feel pressured at any point. Is this still something you want to do?” Yunho continues, in a way adding salt to the wound, the wound in question being the truth Mingi was hiding from him.
Mingi feared this question. So much and for no reason. He himself wasn't completely certain of what he wanted. All he knew was that he wanted to be with Yunho, since being around him was the only time he was really happy. And while Mingi enjoyed dancing and singing with his friend, it didn't feel the same when Yunho wasn’t around. It didn’t feel the same as it did before, something changed. He started feeling a sort pressure that was weighing him. And seeing his friend be happy and succeed while he was stuck in his head made him feel like he was dragging his friend down.
“Of course I do!” he lied. As always he lied. Because disappointing the person he looked up to the most was more heartbreaking to him than lying to him. Mingi puts down the kimbap and continues chewing slowly after taking another bite.
“Have you written anything as of late?” asks Yunho after what seemed to Mingi to be a long break. Seeming as if Yunho had to take in Mingi's lie and dissect it, think about it more, giving possible reasons as to why his best friend would so insistently lie to him. Yunho knows how much writing means to Mingi, and he has always believed that once Mingi stopped writing, the dream would be dead. Such a simple and innocent question, but it held so much meaning, and Mingi knew what Yunho was after.
“I have.” and he was telling the truth. However the lyrics he wrote down weren't exactly some that would ease Yunho's mind in any way.
Upon Mingi’s reply Yunho raised his head and finally made eye contact with his friend. His eyes were full of hope, almost shining, and that alone gave Mingi the strength to at least pretend for some more, to force himself for a while longer.
“That's great to hear! Are you gonna perform it at the audition?” was Yunho's next question. Mingi takes another bite of his kimbap, stalling the conversation. “I'm considering it.” he replies, mindlessly chewing.
“You would tell me if you had any doubts about continuing with becoming a trainee, right?” asks Yunho as he opens the bag of chips, patiently waiting for his friend to eat as well. Yunho never minded waiting for his friend to eat at his own pace, which is one of the many things that Mingi found so comforting about Yunho. How observant and considerate he was. He did so much without ever being asked to and without asking for anything in return.
“Of course.” another lie escaped Mingi’s mouth. Nothing would get in the way of Yunho’s happiness, not even Mingi himself. Mingi takes a sip of his drink and a big bite of his food.
“Wanna sleep over? My parents are gone for the week and we could practice the songs for the audition. And leaving you alone right now isn’t something I want to do, if I’m being honest.” says Yunho, giving Mingi a look full of concern, which made him feel so bad, so guilty, for making his friend worry and in a sense feel like he has to take care of him. Mingi feels like a burden. You are his best friend, you are not a burden is one of the things his brain snaps back at Mingi with, thoughts that he just brushes aside.
“Sure, that sounds fun. Let me just text my parents.” Mingi carefully places his kimbap on the table and takes out his phone, letting his parents know that he won’t be home tonight.
“Great!” says Yunho, giving his friend a bright smile which warms Mingi’s heart. “We can order takeout. And maybe you can show me what you started writing, if you’re down of course.” Mingi just smiles at his friend and nods, taking another bite of his food afterwards.
The rest of their stay in the convenience store was a bit more quiet, every once in a while talking about random things that happened throughout the week at school. The two of them went to different high schools, and Mingi would sometimes listen fascinated to the stories Yunho would tell him about the friends he made there, making it seem so easy to just fit in. By any means does this imply that Mingi was an outcast, but he didn’t manage to form any meaningful friendships other than the one he had with Yunho. Which is also why he valued the time he did manage to spend with him, however short it was. That was another reason why he followed Yunho everywhere whenever he had the chance, be it going to dance classes or auditions or just running different errands together. Yunho was worth anything and everything.
After taking his final bite of his food, Mingi crumples the wrapper and throws it in the nearest bin, his tongue itching to thank him for waiting for him so patiently and apologize to Yunho for taking so long with eating, but Yunho has insisted so many times that it’s no need to thank him nor apologize, since they were gonna spend time together anyway and he felt at ease making sure his friend ate, knowing how forgetful Mingi can get when it came to trivial things.
“Are you feeling any better?” asks Yunho while walking right next to Mingi, playing with the hem of his shirt mindlessly.
Mingi clears his throat, his voice having been unused for a while. “Yeah, I’m not lightheaded anymore, nothing to worry about.”
Mingi’s mind has been filled with names that Yunho has been saying, calling them his friends. San, Hongjoong-hyung. All people that Mingi has never met but has only heard good things about. People from the dance class that he never noticed, such as Yeosang. And there were so many people that Mingi had never heard about before, it felt like every time they hung out Yunho had someone new to talk about and Mingi couldn’t help but feel a tinge of unintentional jealousy. He always brushed it aside and called it selfishness on his part. All these people sounded like great people.
“I really think you’d get along well with San. Or even Yeosang! He was so concerned today after you passed out, he offered to help on multiple occasions, he really seemed worried. He even offered to call someone to pick us up but I insisted it wasn’t necessary.”
For some reason it didn’t quite register in Mingi’s head that everyone in the dance class saw him pass out, which brought some sort of embarrassment to his features. Everyone saw him be weak enough to faint during the class and become a nuisance, something that others could make fun of him for.
“Can we pretend this didn’t happen?” asked Mingi, not realizing he interrupted Yunho from talking. Yunho shut his mouth and immediately understood what his friend was talking about, the next few minutes of the walk being dead silent, Mingi giving himself a mental slap for making things awkward again.
“You are not weak for reaching your limits, Mingi. We are supposed to know our limits and work around and within them, this time you just overstepped them, and that’s fine. You didn’t inconvenience anyone, we were just worried. But if not mentioning this will make you feel at ease, then that’s fine as well. But needing help isn’t something you should feel bad to ask for, especially asking me for it.” says Yunho in a low voice, low enough so only Mingi can hear. Low enough so that maybe it will reach Mingi in a deeper way.
Mingi just nods and keeps his head down. There is something so embarrassing about being comforted and understood so wholeheartedly. He felt seen and exposed whenever Yunho said just the right things. Most of the time Mingi was left speechless at the way Yunho could understand him so well so quickly, when there were times when Mingi felt like he didn’t understand himself, let alone another person.
Mingi just let his head down, feeling in a way scolded, and continued the walk to Yunho’s house. Turned a left, and finally reached his house. His friend unlocks the front door and enters, Mingi following right behind, taking off his shoes quickly.
“Wanna play Mario Kart?” asks Yunho with a big smile on his face, lightly bumping his arm onto Mingi’s, which also makes Mingi smile. “Oh yeah, you are so gonna lose.” says Mingi, playing along and joining in on the playful atmosphere. Mingi pushes Yunho out of his way and runs to Yunho’s room. Yunho’s house feels so much like home to Mingi. Yunho is heard laughing as he is left behind and then heavy, quick footsteps are heard as Yunho follows right behind.
Once Mingi enters Yunho’s room, with his friend right behind Mingi is quick to set up the game for the two of them. Mingi sits on the ground, resting his back on Yunho’s bed, his friend mirroring his position, their upper arms touching. The familiar music of the game starts playing and they start setting up the course.

“Loser buys food?” asks Mingi, looking at Yunho with a playful smile.
…2…!
“Of course. No fainting this time.” replies Yunho, giving his friend a warning look. Mingi laughs.
…1…!
“I am not above using tricks and slightly cheating.” says Mingi and Yunho scoffs in reply, rolling his eyes playfully.
START!
---
“WHAT THE FUCK WHERE DID YOU COME FROM?!” screams Mingi surprised as he is surpassed by Yunho at the last second, leaving Mingi a speechless loser.
“I am not above cheating and using tricks either.” says Yunho simply, winking, with a huge smile on his face.
Mingi’s mouth opens wide in shock, still processing the fact that he lost at the very last second. He playfully punches Yunho’s arm repeatedly, continuously saying things such as ‘How dare you! We need to play another round! You betrayed my moral loyalty! You will pay for this you fucker!’ which made Yunho laugh loudly, his cheeks hurting from the wide smile he had plastered on his face for so long.
Defeated, Mingi stops playfully abusing his friend and lays on Yunho’s bed, looking at the ceiling desperate. He is still in disbelief that he lost by seconds.
“How does fried chicken from our favorite place sound to you?” asks Yunho once he stands up, towering over Mingi. “Fine.” Mingi says and then stands up and pulls his phone from his back pocket, calling the number to the fried chicken place, still sulking over his loss which maintained Yunho’s big smile. In his eyes, Mingi was the cutest person at that moment.
“The food will get here in around 30 minutes. Which songs were you thinking of auditioning with?” asks Mingi as he throws the phone somewhere on Yunho’s bed and crosses his arms over his chest, looking at the TV screen where Yunho’s avatar was still jumping victorious while Mingi’s was celebrating with getting the 2nd place.
“I’m really stuck between these two songs, and I wanna improve my overall technique before the audition so I should master the song completely, you know?” Mingi nods and sits on the bed, slapping his hands on his thighs. “Let’s hear them then. I will pick for you.” Yunho nods and starts looking for the instrumental version of the songs.
“My main two options are Grenade by Bruno Mars and Let Me Love You by Mario. I managed to shorten the amount of options I had but I really can’t pick between these two.” is the last piece of information Yunho gives before the instrumental to Grenade is heard from Yunho’s phone. Yunho was holding the phone in front of him, looking at the lyrics, Mingi assumed.
As the song went on and Yunho sang his soul out, all Mingi could pay attention to was Yunho’s subtle facial expression changes: the way he would furrow his brows and squint his eyes when hitting a higher note, keeping the rhythm and the beat of the song with his foot so he wouldn’t sing too fast or slow.
Sometime during the middle of the song Mingi realized how enchanted he was by his friend’s singing, so much so that he wasn’t even hearing his voice anymore, he was just looking up at his friend and admiring his talent, his passion. How desire to succeed would flow through and out his body with everything he did. Everything Yunho touched suddenly had the potential of becoming greater.
Yunho was shining so brightly and even now, as he was standing two steps away from his friend, Mingi couldn’t help but feel like he’s light-years behind. Standing so close to Yunho was burning his skin and hurting his eyes, but the warmth Yunho offered, even though torturous in this moment especially, felt so good that Mingi couldn’t help but be selfish, indulge in this friendship a while longer, stick to him for a bit more time and maybe, just maybe, Yunho’s brightness would rub off on Mingi, even though Mingi knew that it could never be possible, and he would just extinguish Yunho’s flame while trying to protect and amplify it.
“How was it?” asks Yunho after clearing his throat, getting Mingi’s attention finally. Mingi closes his mouth that he realized was slightly hanging open and then opens it again to think of something to say, but no words would dare to leave his throat, as if stuck somewhere on their way. To be completely honest he didn’t pay as much attention as he should’ve but he heard snippets of it while he was getting too much in his head and then back to reality.
“Was it that bad?” is the next question Yunho asks, his voice heavily laced with anxiety. Mingi stands up offended, as if he himself got insulted. “What? Hell no!” says the words as if punched out of him, and takes a big step towards his friend, resting his hands on Yunho’s shoulders and looking for his eyes.
“It sounded so good, Yunho-ya! You improved so much in such a short amount of time, I am genuinely impressed, I was speechless. Your high notes are so stable and consistent and your facial expressions are so eye-catching, I was truly just mesmerized.” rambles Mingi while not breaking eye contact once, seeing as Yunho’s anxiety melted away with each word Mingi said, bringing a huge smile to Yunho’s face, which made Mingi’s heart skip a beat as he realized how silly he sounded.
Mingi has never been vocal about his high admiration for his friend and he felt so vulnerable and exposed in that moment that he felt like he was burning up. The words he just said were repeating continuously in his mind, making him more embarrassed by the second.
“Thank you so much Mingi, it means a lot coming from you. I really appreciate it.” Yunho replies, which makes some of Mingi’s embarrassment go away. Yunho pulls Mingi in a hug that the latter is quick to accept and reciprocate, squeezing Yunho quickly before backing away from the hug and sitting back down on the bed. “Come on, next song.” Yunho nods and looks for the instrumental.
Yunho starts with the ad-libs as soon as the instrumental starts playing and Mingi tries to be focused this time, really wanting to help his friend with constructive criticism and honest opinions, otherwise he was starting to feel like he was wasting his friend’s time, even though he just couldn’t help being distracted and mesmerized by Yunho’s pure talent. He embodied each song he sang, giving the lyrics and the way he interpreted a separate meaning, putting his own touch on it.
Up until the last minute and a half of the song Yunho didn’t get to showcase his vocal range, but as the ending approached, he was belting the higher notes and showcasing his vibrato quite well. Mingi looked at him as he reached a higher note and the corners of his mouth went up in a proud smile. Yunho did improve so much and Mingi didn’t even notice it until now.
As the song ends, Yunho closes his phone and shoves it in his back pocket, anxiously waiting for feedback, shuffling from one foot to another.
“Your voice is very stable and your vibrato has improved a lot since the last time you attempted it, but I worry that if you are to go with this song, the people at the audition might either see the potential behind it or simply turn you down. You do have very good control with both songs and it’s obvious you’ve been practicing like crazy, so I see why it’s so hard for you to decide on one.” Yunho nods along and lets a small smile slip on his lips, being proud of himself for earning Mingi’s praise like this.
“I think you can either decide based on a coin flip or we could get a drink and let our drunk selves decide!” suggests Mingi while standing up excited, as if he just had the most genius idea. Yunho bursts into laughter and leans himself on Mingi while catching his breath.
“You’re the only one who will get drunk, Mingi, but sure. I will let you pick which song once you are black-out drunk, is that a deal?” asks Yunho with a chuckle as he wraps an arm around Mingi’s shoulders and pulls him into a tight side hug, a hug that Mingi gladly accepts.
“Then it’s settled!” claims Mingi between giggles and Yunho nods. The doorbell ringing makes the both of them redirect their attention towards the hallway and Mingi quickly makes his way towards the front door, snatching his backpack on the way and getting his wallet out, ready to pay for their food, Yunho a few steps behind him, excited for the food.
“Do you have any alcohol or should we run to 7/11 really quickly?” asks Mingi as he places the bag with their food on the kitchen table.
“I do have some but not enough. Let’s go and get some. Beer with soju goes great with fried chicken.” says Yunho and he goes ahead and puts on his shoes and grabs his backpack, emptying all the dancing equipment in it to make room for the alcohol. “Quick though, we don’t want the food to get cold!” Yunho says as he pushes Mingi out of the house with a big smile on his face, the both of them jogging towards the store after Yunho locked the front door.
Mingi was suddenly feeling liberated and at peace, all of his worries and concerns left him in the last hour he’s been together with Yunho and he wishes he could live each and every day this way.
They reach the convenience store in five minutes and start slowly walking through the aisles, looking for the drinks of their choice. They split, Yunho going for the soju and Mingi for the beers, the two of them meeting at the cash registry, Yunho paying for the four beers and four bottles of soju, carefully putting them in his backpack and leaving the store, now with no rush home, not wishing to break the bottles.
Despite the two of them being friends for so long, they haven’t hung out like this in a long while due to their high schools being so far from each other, even though Yunho did his best to keep in touch with Mingi. But now that school and finals were over they could finally focus on each other as well as everything else they had going on. They were now talking about nothing, having mindless conversations that Mingi wasn’t giving much thought to, but all he knew was that he loved everything Yunho related and anything that involved his friends.
The two reach Yunho’s house again, and after putting the drinks in the fridge (all but two bottles of beer and one of soju) and washing their hands, they finally sit at the table. Mingi pours Soju into the small glass and after taking the shot together, “Ok finally let’s dig in.” says Yunho, looking at the food excitedly.
---
“Remember when… Oh my God wait, fuck this was so funny.” says Mingi in between loud laughs, being too giddy to try and contain his laughter, his cheeks hurting. “Remember when I took too long eating lunch and you spent the rest of the day in my high school? The professors were so confused.”
“They did accept me very quickly though, once they realized I was not there to cause trouble. Some even asked me to attend their classes more often.” continues Yunho, with a huge smile on his face and rosy cheeks.
“They did like you more than most of the other students but who can blame them, you are very likeable and charming, and how smart you are just made them like you instantly.” rambles Mingi, looking at his friends with big eyes and raised eyebrows, as if trying to convince him that everything he was saying was true. Yunho just giggles out of embarrassment and covers his mouth that was growing in a bigger smile, looking at Mingi with adoration in his eyes. Mingi always had only words of praise for his friend.
While Mingi was still blabbering about God knows what, Yunho takes the opportunity to refill their glasses. “Stop with this nonsense and drink.” says as he hands Mingi his now filled glass, Yunho having his own glass in the other hand.
“I mean it, you know?” says Mingi as he opens his eyes wide and he looks at his friend, taking the drink in his right hand, and putting his left hand on his friend’s shoulder and squeezing it. “You are such a bright and warm person, people are always drawn to you. Never doubt that about yourself.” says Mingi while stuttering a bit due to the alcohol in his system, always having been more lightweight than Yunho.
Yunho tries to hold in a laugh -one of embarrassment and endearment, not in any way laughing at Mingi-, feeling as his ears were starting to get redder and his face was heating up. Yunho starts to awkwardly laugh and with his free hand he guides Mingi’s hand that had the drink in towards his mouth. “Please just drink, Mingi.” says Yunho as he laughs awkwardly. Mingi always expresses his admiration for his friend, but that doesn’t make it any less embarrassing to accept or listen to.
Mingi finally decides to drop it and takes a few sips of his drink. “I think you should go for Bruno Mars.” says Mingi as he rests his forehead on the cold wooden table while his head was spinning.
“What are you going to audition with for the rapper position?” asks Yunho as he clears up the table a little, sorting everything in piles for plastic, paper and then putting aside the dirty dishes.
“One of the raps I wrote a while ago I think. I have to decide on which one.” replies Mingi honestly as he raises his head and looks at Yunho through heavy-lidded eyes.
Yunho just nods and takes another big sip of his drink.
“What if I don't pass the audition?” asks Mingi as he blankly stares and Yunho. Normally he wouldn't verbalize his insecurities like this. Especially not the ones that had to do with the audition as he doesn’t want Yunho to catch on to Mingi’s loss of interest in debuting.
Mingi straightens his back and puts his hands on his lap, making them into fists and waiting for Yunho's reply, expecting him to tell him to give up and save himself the time and embarrassment of being rejected.
Yunho furrows his brows. “Why would you even think that, Mingi? And even if that were to happen, which it won't, but if it did, it would be their loss and we will go to another company.” Yunho simply replies.
“We?” asks Mingi confused as he raises his head as if startled and looks at Yunho with wide eyes. Why would Yunho change the company only because Mingi wouldn't pass?
“We are debuting together, Mingi. Under the same company. No matter what. I am not leaving your side.” quickly answers Yunho to reassure Mingi, putting his hand on top of Mingi's clenched fist and that’s when Mingi finally loosens up a bit.
“Even if… There will be a day when my burdens and problems will be too heavy to carry? And it will get exhausting to help and understand? And what if my company won’t be pleasant enough to have around and I will drag you down with me?” are the words that leave Mingi’s mouth as his body goes limp and looks at Yunho’s hand covering his own.
Mingi surprises himself with the words he just let out as he did not plan on giving away so much of his insecurities in one night, and he wishes that he just imagined saying those things out loud, but that possibility is quickly excluded as with the corner of his eye he sees Yunho raise his head straighten his back to look better at his friend that was still just eyeing their hands.
Yunho lets out a deep sigh which makes Mingi hold his breath as if it was his last in return, closing his eyes shut and expecting the impact of Yunho’s words. He was expecting for him to agree with him, tell him nicely that he won’t be near him to witness Mingi’s downfall. That he wouldn’t want to see how flawed and broken his friend really was, and how much worse things could really get.
But that didn’t happen.
“Especially then. If those days ever come, I will be here to soften your landing as you stumble and fall, which is normal to do. Sharing your burdens would be my pleasure, Mingi. Please allow me to stay near you and please allow yourself to lean on me when you need the time to rest.” Yunho squeezes Mingi’s hand reassuringly as he is observing his features. Mingi still has his eyes shut close, trying to stop any tears from leaving his eyes. “You’re not weak if you rely on others. You are not weak if you need help. Nothing you ever do needs to be done alone. Please let me help you Mingi.” continues Yunho, hoping that his words will reach the Mingi that is sitting beyond a brick wall that he built himself throughout the years to shield himself. But in moments like these it seems like this wall is hurting Mingi more than protecting him.
“Come here.” Yunho pulls Mingi in a hug that he is quick to accept. “You don’t have to say anything to all the things I said, I just wanted to make sure you actually hear what I’m saying.”
Mingi sniffles and nods, which makes a nostalgic smile form on Yunho’s lips. Mingi has always been more fragile than he seems, which is what Yunho always found so endearing about him.
Mingi indulges in Yunho’s touch for a bit longer, allowing himself to fully calm down and saving Yunho the misfortune of seeing his friend all teared up. This isn’t the first time Yunho is here to comfort his friend and it isn’t the first time that Mingi ends up crying in his arms. Mingi loosens his hold on his friend and backs away, pretending nothing happened, and getting up to pour himself a glass of water.
“I really think you should go with Grenade for the audition.” says Mingi after drinking two glasses of water and after he rid himself of the dry throat sensation he was feeling.
Yunho chuckles and smiles widely. “Thank you.”

Prompt: You go to visit Yunho on a very short notice due to having a bad day and he melts your frustrations very fast. He's playing with his friends but he wants to play with you<3

You are overwhelmed. So overwhelmed. Work was more stressful than usual, it seemed like the entire world was turned upside-down, all the customers you encountered today were in a bad mood, in some way or another, which also put you in a bad mood and have been on edge since your shift started. And when your shift finally ended, it started raining, and you got a text from your parents, letting you know that more relatives came over. Normally you would be able to put up a front and deal with them, but not now.
‘Are you home?’ you quickly text your boyfriend Yunho, right after texting your parents that you already made plans. You were not getting home tonight.
Ten minutes passed by and no reply from your boyfriend, the rain calmed down a little though. You start making your way towards your boyfriend’s house, which is fairly close to the place you work at.
As you get closer to his house, starting to see it in the distance, you let out a relieved breath as you finally get a text back. ‘Yes. Why? Something happened?’ is his reply. He’s probably playing with his friends. Now that you think about it, he did tell you that he planned this gaming night in advance and you are about to bother him. But you felt like you were about to explode if anything else went bad. Your clothes stuck to your skin due to the rain and it frustrated you so bad and all you wanted was to be a bit selfish and hug your boyfriend. ‘I’m coming over, I’m sorry.’ is the last thing you text as you shove your phone in your tote bag and reach his house, ringing his bell and waiting, the door opens a few seconds later and you are pulled inside by your wrists.
You are pulled into a tight hug, your face tightly pressed into Yunho’s chest, his arms wrapped around your shoulders. He didn’t say anything, and neither did you. You just took in his scent and presence, listened to his heartbeat as you calmed down. It was insane how fast Yunho was able to calm you down and ground you.
“I’m sorry I came unannounced, but I really needed you.” you are the one to break the silence. One of his hands goes up and down your back while the other is still around your shoulders. Yunho slightly pulls back to look you in the eyes and smiles at you, bending a little and kissing your forehead. He was wearing his glasses. You love it when he wears them.
“Don’t be sorry, princess. I always love having you over, you know that. Just let me end the call with the guys, and I can give you all of my attention, yeah?” Yunho says as he takes your hand into his and starts walking towards his room. Him cancelling his plans is exactly what you didn't want him to do.
You firmly plant the heels of your feet into the ground and he turns around, once again facing you, with a confused puppy-like expression on his face. “You are not going to cancel your plans because of me. I know you've been looking forward to playing with them. I don't mind just being in the room with you while you do your thing. Your presence is all I need.” you say as you play with his fingers.
“It's really no problem, princess. Let me take care of you.” Yunho insists as he takes one step closer to you, but you take one back, to keep the distance and in a way threatening him. “If you cancel your plans I will go home. I don't care if it's still raining or that I will catch a cold.” you verbally threaten and you look at him with wide eyes and a serious expression. He knows you are not joking.
Yunho lets out a defeated sigh and pulls you into another hug. “You are so stubborn sometimes, you know?” he says and then proceeds to kiss your head. “Learned from the best! Now go back to your game, I will just take a hot shower and then stay in your room.” you say as you peck his lips once and then push him into his room and then on the chair that was sitting in front of the desk, seeing on the monitors the ongoing game waiting for him.
You turn on your heels to go and pick some clothes you left at his house for moments like these, but Yunho has other plans and grabs your wrist and pulls you onto his lap. You are now straddling him, your forehead pressed together. He loses no time and he pulls you into a kiss that quickly turns heated, as his tongue slowly licks your lips, urging you to open them, which you do eagerly. One of your hands finds its way into Yunho’s blonde hair while the other one comfortably rests on his neck, feeling his pulse picking up, all while his hands were resting on your ass and your tongues were taking turns in exploring each other’s mouths.
As you were about to start moving your hips, he pulled away and let his head fall on the headrest of the chair, both of you having your breaths heavy, his glasses being slightly foggy in the inner side of it. However, his neck being so exposed as it was, made you connect your lips to his jaw, placing kisses up to his ear and then down his neck, taking your sweet time into worshipping every inch of that sensitive skin, earning some groans from his part.
He cups your face and pushes your face back slightly so he could look you in the eye. His cheeks were a slight shade of pink, but his ears were bright red. His mouth was slightly open and his hot breath was fanning your face. He was the most beautiful person you have ever seen. He always was and always will be.
“Go take that shower before I cancel my plans.” he says in a low voice, his stare piercing right through you. You wish you could be selfish and ask him to cancel his plans without feeling guilty about it, but Yunho’s in-game character doing his idle animations while waiting to be controlled and the faint voices of his friends that you could hear from the headset on the desk just made it impossible for you to ask that of him. You nod and get off his lap, heading towards his closet and he sits properly in front of the desk and puts the headphones on his head, starting back the call he was on.
“Sorry it took so long, I had something to take care of but I’m back now.” Yunho says as he places one of his hands over the mouse and the other over the keyboard. You rummage in Yunho’s closet until you find the clothes he always has ready for you, a pair of sweats and one of his white plain shirts. You take a towel and head to the bathroom.
Finally a hot shower.
***
Once you were clean, warm and most importantly, dry, you were starting to feel much better. You re-enter Yunho’s room and he was in the same position you left him earlier, but wearing different clothes, as you dampened up the clothes he was wearing earlier. Yunho is in front of his computer, hands on mouse and keyboard and glasses resting on the bridge of his nose, however there was a very concentrated expression painting his features, his bottom lip trapped tightly between his teeth. God he is so cute.
While passing by next to him to reach his bed, you lean over and give him a quick kiss on the cheek that causes his features to soften all of a sudden and he gives you a huge smile.
“Feeling better?” Yunho asks while still looking at the screen, but removing his headphones from one ear. You sit on his bed and just hum, to which he nods and puts back his headset.
You grab your phone and so the mindless scrolling on various social media platforms begins.
You would look over at your boyfriend every time he would let out any sound such as a gasp or a groan of frustration and you would smile. At times you could even hear Wooyoung’s voice escaping from Yunho’s headphones.
Wooyoung, the person you are most grateful for as he introduced you to Yunho. When he said he has a friend he’s gaming with that he thinks you’d get along with, you didn’t really know what to think of it, but you still agreed to him setting up a blind date for the two of you, and you couldn’t be more thankful.
You and Yunho just clicked right away. There was no moment of awkwardness between the two of you, maybe because he can handle conversations so well. But it’s been a little over eight months since the two of you started dating and things are going more than great.
One of the first things you talked about were your love languages, debating who has what love language, and while he could give and receive love in each and every way (true puppy behaviour), you on the other hand were only really okay with anything but gift receiving and acts of service at times, mainly because you were so overfilled with guilt whenever Yunho did something for you out of the kindness of his heart or whenever he got you something only because it reminded him of you. But you were working on it. Yunho was patiently rewiring and changing your perception of love, making it a healthy one.
This wasn’t the first time you came over on a short notice while he was gaming or doing other things, and usually you are okay with just being near his presence while each of you do your thing, but this time you wanted him close. This time quality time was just not enough. You want his undivided attention and his arms around your body while you talk about nothing and everything. But you also don’t want him to end his plans early.
And then you get the genius idea.
You tap into the notepad app on your phone and start typing a quick message so he isn’t too confused.
‘Can I sit on your lap please? I need you close:c’
You get out of bed and make small steps in his direction, and once you are next to him you slide the phone in his sight and he quickly reads the note and then looks up at you with a surprised face that quickly turns into a huge smile. “Give me a second guys, I need to go to the bathroom.” says Yunho into his headset and then mutes himself, takes off his headset and stands up, pulling you into his chest for a big hug and you are quick to wrap your arms around his waist.
“Is my princess needy? Is my presence not enough?” he says in a playful and teasing tone, using your words from earlier against you, and you get embarrassed, hiding your face further into his chest, inhaling his scent. “Nope, I was wrong. Need you close.” you reply simply and he chuckles. He takes a step back and takes your hands into his, caressing your hands with his thumbs.
“You sure you don’t want me to end the call? The guys won’t mind, I promise you.” Yunho says while tilting his head to the side, giving you a soft smile. But you don’t fall for it, you are not backing down. With one of your arms still clinging to his waist you bring the other close to his face and adjust his glasses that were close to the tip of your nose. “Yes I’m sure. Just let me stay next to you please.”
He looks down at you, straight into your eyes and you can visibly see him weigh his options. “Two more rounds and then I’m leaving the call, I’m starting to get tired of it and I wanna spend more time with my princess. I’ve been playing with them for the past four hours.” Yunho says as he gives you his best puppy eyes, pouting while looking at you through his glasses. Your biggest weakness: fluffy hair and glasses.
“Deal.” you say after a long sigh and he smiles brightly, leaning into a kiss, a quick one, ending after placing a few fast pecks over your lips.
Yunho sits back on his chair and turns it towards you, making room for you. You carefully place your legs on each side and then sit, slithering your arms around his waist and placing your head on his shoulder, Yunho’s head resting against yours for a bit before straightening it again.
Yunho then drags the chair back in front of the desk and puts on his headset, unmuting himself and continuing the game he was playing, from now on being more considerate before making any sudden moves or saying anything in a louder voice. Your heart hurts from the love you have for him, the little things making your love for him grow greater. How his arms would hug you tighter whenever he died in game or had a few seconds of nothing happening, how he placed small quick kisses on your neck or shoulder, taking you off guard and making you blush.
You turn your head so you could face his neck this time and you look up at him between your eyelashes. The angle was a bit weird and would make anyone look not that great, but Yunho was still so beautiful. His blonde hair looked very fluffy and messy, his glasses sitting comfortably on the bridge of his nose, bottom lip still trapped between his teeth as his concentrated brown eyes were stuck on the screen monitor. You place a kiss on his neck and see him smile slightly, seeing as he was trying to focus on the game, but he still died and was now on cooldown to respawn. You mute and deafen his mic quickly and he turns to look at you, kissing the tip of your nose which makes you smile.
“I love you, my Yuyu. Thank you for having me over.” you say as you tighten your hug, feeling as if you will never be able to show him just how much you love him actually. Words are never enough, any physical contact is never enough, nothing will ever be enough to make him understand and see how much you love him and that frustrates you.
“I love you more princess, more than you can imagine.” Yunho replies as he adjusts your hair with one hand, ending up caressing your cheek as you lean into his touch.
Before Yunho gets to respawn he sees the losing screen on the game so he unmutes and undeafen himself, being able to hear his friends complaining over yet another loss, which you find endearing to some extent and you giggle, hiding your face into Yunho’s chest so they wouldn’t hear you.
Yunho closes the game before they get to invite him to another one. “This game fucking sucks. I’m logging out for the day, you guys have fun. See you next week at the same time, bye.” he replies, rushing, not giving any of them the chance to stop him or to try and convince him to stay for one more game. He leaves the discord call and takes off his headset and glasses, leaning back into the chair and closing his eyes, taking a deep breath in. You stay like that for a while, with you still on top of him, hugging him tightly and hearing his heartbeat, one of his hands going up and down your back. You find yourself smiling at the comfort and security Yunho brings you.
He suddenly stands up which makes you yelp, circling his waist with your legs this time, your arms around his shoulders, pulling him close. Yunho laughs and places a kiss on your cheek.
“Now, how about we play something, hmm?” Yunho says as he slowly and carefully lays you on the bed, placing his palms on either side of your head to hold his weight so he wouldn’t squish you.
You smile and bring your hands to the back of his neck and pull him into a kiss.

“Can I Facetime you? Urgency level 10.” you quickly text Yunho. You briefly see his chat bubble appear and then disappear, seeing as he called you.
“What’s burning? What happened? Is someone following you?” he asks concerned, as he inspects your background, noticing you are in your room. He exhales loudly and you giggle, wiping your tears and hugging your knees.
“I miss you. We haven’t talked that much lately and I miss you so much.” your words come out muffled, sniffling and new tears replace the ones you just wiped. You’ve always been this attached to him, he was the only person that ever allowed you to be clingy and express your feelings the way you wanted and needed, and he took it all gladly. He loved being loved by you, which made you love him even more.
He sighs and you notice as his expression morphs into a sad one, seeing his lips gain a small pout. “I miss you too princess. But I will be with you soon, just a few more weeks and I will be there.” he says trying to comfort you, at which you nod and try to stop your tears.
“Are you busy? Do you have things to do? Anything to study for?” you ask slightly anxious that you are wasting his time. You see him scratch the back of his neck and nod. “Yeah… I have like two exams coming up this week and a few more presentations to work on. But they can wait, you need me way more and you are more important.” he replies he smiles sweetly at you.
Is this the right time to mention the huge crush you’ve had on this man for the past nine years? A crush that was impossible to get rid of. Your heart does a flip at his smile.
“No fucking way. Did you make plans with your friends to study?” you ask alarmed, straightening your back and looking at him. “I did but I already told them that I’m not coming the moment you texted me. It’s okay princess, really.” he reassures you again.
“Nope. It is not. We are having a study date together right now. I should be studying too. Come on get your notebooks and let’s go.” you say fully motivated as you go to sit on your desk and get your things ready. He laughs and looks at you lovingly with a cute small smile plastered on his lips. He also goes to sit at his desk and gets to work, at times mumbling whatever he was reading or writing or even explaining it to you so he himself could understand it. As for you, not much studying happened as you couldn’t help but stare at his focused, concentrated face.
The love you have for this man… You are doomed.
***
You check yourself in the mirror once more before picking up your tote bag that had your things and leaving your house, getting into your car and heading towards the airport.
After
Your childhood best friend Yunho is finally coming back home after studying abroad for the past three years. And while you two still talked on the phone and texted a lot, not being able to see him whenever you wanted was annoying, as well as the lack of any physical contact, which was so painful for you to be suddenly robbed by his warm hugs, by his arms circling your waist and pulling you oh so close.
You shake your head at the thought. You were about to see him and your heart was beating like crazy. Sure maybe you had a small crush on him. For the past 9 years of your life, and sure maybe you should give up already, but your heart can't calm down whenever he's around. But you are not delusional enough to interpret every touch and every look he gives you as him reciprocating your crush for him, the two of you have always been this close and used disgustingly cute pet names just to annoy each other. You are more than okay with Yunho not liking you like that.
Before you know it you reach the airport, thanks to being lost in your thoughts. You park your car quickly and get inside the building, looking to see when exactly his plane lands. He lands in 10 minutes at gate 5, so you quickly look for it, and while there are around five minutes left of waiting, you remember you forgot something in your car. Could you make a run for it? I mean for sure, it takes forever to get off the plane and get your luggage and everything. So you run out of the building and towards your car to get the bouquet of flowers you got for your friend on your way to the airport.
Once you have the flowers in your arms, you quickly rearrange them and head back inside the airport, but after you check the arrivals screen again you don’t see Yunho’s flight anymore. Did everyone unbark already?
You started to take bigger steps towards gate 5. Or was it gate 4? You couldn’t remember. You were now jogging towards the area where you thought (and wished) the right gate was, and while in your hurry you jog full force into someone’s chest, the flowers squish between your body and the person’s in front of you. Oh fuck not Yunho’s flowers.
You take a step back and tears gather at the corners of your eyes as you look at the now very squished flowers, some of the petals falling off. Without making eye contact (you always hated making eye contact with strangers) you started apologising to the poor person you just hit and somehow didn’t see at all.
“I’m so so sorry, I don’t know where I was looking. Are you ok? Did you get hurt?” you ask while looking at the ground now, trying to keep the tears at bay so they wouldn’t spill over, looking very sadly at the flowers.
“Are you ok princess?” responds a very familiar voice. The pet name disgusted you at first, coming from a stranger as far as you knew, but once the voice registered in your mind, you raised your head, you raised it so much that your neck was in a very uncomfortable position. It was Yunho. A very tall Yunho. Taller than you remembered.
“Yunho.” you whisper and then get your arms around his wait, pulling him into a very tight hug. If you weren’t crying before, you surely were crying now, while you were snuggling into his chest, not caring if you were dirtying his shirt, and he didn’t seem to care either, as one of his arms went around your shoulders and the other was resting on the top of your head, caressing your hair gently. He was talking to you, but you were so overwhelmed by his presence and scent and just all sorts of emotions that you could not hear anything anymore, you were just feeling everything. Your heart was beating so fast and you were hearing his heartbeat just as fast as yours and you were smiling like crazy into his chest. Oh how you missed him.
“Never leave for this long again.” you muffle while your face is still buried in his chest and you feel him laugh under your touch, which makes you smile.
You finally pull back, taking a step back and wiping your tears with the back of your hand, not caring at all how messy your face was right now. You remember the bouquet you had in your hand the whole time and you give the flowers one last look before you stretch your arm with the flowers towards him.
Yunho looked down at the very colourful flowers trying to contain his excitement, but his smile was the widest and prettiest you’ve ever seen. “For you. They are Gladiolus, I know you’ve talked about how much you like them that one time. I’m sorry, they looked so much prettier five minutes ago before I basically ran you over…” you shily say while looking down at your feet, still embarrassed by you bumping into him like that. He takes the flowers gladly, looking at them adoringly and smiling, you would even say he was blushing a little. He slightly leans down and circles your waist with his arms and pulls you in a hug and lifts you at the same time, your feet leaving the floor, being forced to quickly wrap your arms around his neck so you wouldn’t fall, letting out a surprised squeak.
“I love them. Thank you.” he says as he buries his face in your neck, his deep, low voice and his very strong scent and steady hold on you making you freeze for a brief second, in which you start playing with the short hairs at the back of his neck.
He slowly puts you back on the ground and you look up at him. When and how did he get this tall? “Let’s go.” you say as you grab one of his luggages and drag it after you. He knows it’s pointless if he insists he carries it, so he doesn’t even try, instead he just follows right behind while still looking at the flowers lovingly, dragging behind him the other luggage that had on top of it a huge shoulder bag. You are the only person to ever give him flowers, and while this isn’t the first time you gave him pretty flowers, he is always in awe when he receives them.
“When the fuck did you get this tall? What have you been doing over there?” you ask jokingly to break him out of his trance and he laughs. “Maybe you just got shorter?” he replies jokingly and you slap his arm which just makes him laugh more. “I grew like two inches. I’m not really sure how but I didn’t notice it until people started pointing it out. I’m around 6'2 now, not that much of a difference honestly.” he continues and you try to hide your shock. 6'2. Holy fuck. There was a time when the two of you were the same height, and you’re not even that short, you’re 5'6. This guy just kept stretching.
You look with the corner of your eye at him and how much taller he is than you, towering over you while just walking next to you. You return your eyes ahead of you, feeling as your face was starting to redden up. “How was the flight?” you ask, trying to distract yourself from the way he made you feel. He starts telling you all about it while you lead him towards your car. He puts the luggages in the trunk and then gets in the front seat.
“How have you been? How has the town been? Living without me must’ve been terrible right? I’m impressed you didn’t burn the house down.” he teases. Before he moved to Japan for his Master’s he used to be your dorm mates. It just made sense, you know? Being friends for so long and getting along so well, your communication was so good and you two worked so well together, it was the most obvious thing to move in together. And it was the most obvious thing to continue like this now. You two living together was also another factor of why you didn’t plan on telling him the feelings you have for him, besides the obvious of him not feeling the same.
You didn’t look for a new dorm mate while he was gone either, even though he said he was okay with the idea of renting his room while he was gone, you weren’t okay with it.
“It was horrible, never dare leave me alone for this long again.” you say in a joking tone even though you were dead serious, and he knows it as well.
On the ride to your house he tells you about the friends he made in Japan, how they threw him a small party the night before, how they all ended up crying over him leaving while the rest of them were staying. “Though one of the girls, Yoko, I’ve told you about her before, confessed that she liked me for a while. But I turned her down for multiple reasons.” he says at one point and the statement makes your heart skip a beat. I mean yeah, who wouldn’t. “We all promised to keep in touch. They might even visit one day. You will have to meet them when they do, they are really the nicest.” Yunho continues to tell you excited while you were still stuck on the girl liking him, your grip on the steering wheel tightening. Were you mad? No, no reason or right to be. Jealous? Maybe only because this girl had the courage to say something you’ve been trying to say for nine years.
“What got you so mad? Your knuckles are turning white. What are you thinking about?” Yunho asks, concerned as he touches your hand that was on the gear. You flinch at the unexpected contact and quickly focus back on the road. This is not the time to be getting jealous for no good reason. “I was thinking if I locked the door or not when I left.” you quickly lie and he looks at you with a doubtful look but brushes it off, telling you about the friends he made at the dance classes he attended.
That was close.
*
Once you park your car in the driveway you help Yunho with his luggage and bring them into his room. “Did you clean my room?” he asks after he looks around, noticing there is little to no dust on the furniture. “Yeah every once in a while. I didn’t want dust to pile up and I wanted to welcome you back with a clean room.” you say while you follow him with your eyes as he falls on the bed, letting out a sigh. “Feels good to finally be home.” he mumbles while his face is buried in a pillow. You smile widely. He said home. He thinks of you and this place as home. His words make you insanely happy and want to do flips. Despite having had a great time in Japan, with a girl liking him, he still considered this his home.
“Wanna leave you to get some sleep? I know you had a few stressful days with the whole coming back process.” you ask while shifting your weight from one foot to the other. He nods. “Yeah. Thank you. We will catch up when I wake up. Love you.” he says in a very sleepy voice and you nod, silently leaving his room and entering yours.
And then it hits you.
What did he say?
Did he say what you heard him say?
Did he actually say that?
You’re pretty sure he did.
Are you so down bad for him that you’re starting to imagine him saying this?
That can’t be right.
It’s fine. He loves you as a friend. Friends always say this shit.
Not you two though you never actually said you love each other.
Stop spiralling. He’s your best friend, you’ve known each other for so long, it goes without saying that you love each other. It has gone without saying for so long. And yeah, maybe you love each other in very different ways, but it’s still love. But if he says it more often your heart will break over and over again every time, as being in love with someone and loving someone are so different.
You fall face down onto the bed, letting out an exasperated groan that was muffled by your pillow. Let’s hope this won’t become a usual thing, because the way the words fell out his mouth sounded beautiful.
***
A week has passed since Yunho came back home and you are feeling as if your sanity is slowly leaving you. You are starting to think that he knows you like him and he’s playing a prank on you.
He keeps telling you either muffled or whispered ‘love you’ ’s at different times of the day, but you either pretend you don’t hear him or actually don’t hear him, in which case you ask him what he said and he always says ‘nothing’.
A bit more touchier than usual, which is crazy to say since you are very touchy usually, but here you think you might look into it too much. But you feel like he is closer than usual, his arms rest around your waist for a few seconds longer, you catch him staring more often. When you hang out with your friends he always ends up sitting next to you, with his arm either around your shoulders and dragging you closer to him or with his head resting on your shoulder and snuggling into you, which always makes you a flustered, blushing mess that your friends never comment on or tease you for, since they know the way you feel about Yunho.
Mingi was the first to notice and then everyone else knew about it. Was it that they noticed themselves or Mingi told them, you’ll never know.
And no matter how hard you tried to not fall for it, how hard you tried to convince yourself that this was just what friends did, you just couldn’t. Your first thought was that maybe he liked you, but you gave up on that thought quickly as it made no sense. Your second thought was that maybe he was playing a prank on you, that maybe he found out about your feelings for him and was making fun of you, but again this was very unlikely, Yunho wouldn’t do that, would he? But what else could it be?
These were the thoughts that were drowning your mind as you were at a pub with your friends, being in a situation similar to a past one. On the bench, next to Yunho, his arm casually around your shoulders, pulled close to him, your head resting on his shoulder, one of his hands playing with the ends of your hair while actively participating in the conversation.
Suddenly he laughs with his entire body, as he always does, and that pulls you out of your thoughts and back to reality. You raise your head and look up at him, seeing as he has his head thrown back, laughing loudly, his eyes closed shut and you can’t help but smile. He’s so beautiful, so breathtaking and your heart swells up, your entire being becoming happy and feeling warm and fuzzy. You love him so much and he brings so many pleasant emotions that it makes you sad, melancholic.
He finally lowers his head, having calmed down his laughing and he looks down at you, making eye contact, having the biggest smile on his lips and you feel like you could explode. Yunho’s grip on your shoulders suddenly tightens and he pulls you closer, pressing his lips on your forehead and then pulling back, straightening his head and returning to the conversation your friends were having.
You however, didn’t change your position. Your eyes widened and your mouth opened slightly in surprise, staring at the wall, trying to process what happened. You could still feel his lips on your forehead, so soft. However you could also feel your face heat up and your friends’ eyes on you. You readjust your head and look down at your lap, looking at your hands fidgeting trying to distract yourself and maybe convince yourself that nothing happened, but the lingering sensation on your forehead was telling you otherwise.
Maybe you should talk to Yunho tonight when you get home. Maybe.
You are suddenly very aware of your lack of interaction with your friends, you’ve barely said a word or touched your drink ever since you’ve gotten here hours ago.
You clear your throat and gain everyone’s attention, including Yunho’s, who was looking down at you curiously this time. You make eye contact with the people that are sitting across from you. “I think I will go home now, I have to wake up early tomorrow, but this hangout was fun, we are finally in the complete formation.” is the little white lie you come up with.
After you are done speaking you stand up, Yunho taking his arm away seconds before you stand up, and after you hug everyone goodbye and wish them to continue having fun, promising to meet up again soon, after one final look at Yunho you leave the pub.
Tonight you will talk with Yunho. And you will tell him everything. Because you are starting to feel like he is giving you false hope.
It was around midnight, it was still warm outside but every once in a while a breeze would pass by and cool you down a bit. You didn’t take your car as you thought you’d be drinking more than you did and the pub is kind of close to your house anyway, you should be safe to arrive on your own.
Your head was filled with all the small touches Yunho shared with you throughout the week, but the forehead kiss from tonight was something else, it caught you off guard the most. You were thinking so deeply about it that you didn’t hear Yunho call after you to wait up, which lead to him touching your shoulder to get your attention and startling you, scared it would be a stranger, but as you turn around and instantly make eye contact with someone’s chest you are quick to figure out that it’s Yunho and you look up at him, relieved.
You bring your hand over your heart, feeling it beat very fast, taking a deep breath. “Never do that again, I could’ve died!” you say in an exaggerated tone and you hear him giggle, he puts one of his hands on your and pats you gently. “Oh don’t be dramatic, I tried getting your attention by talking to you but you were deep in thought and didn’t hear me. What were you even thinking about?” he asks as he leans in closer to you, his face inches away, inspecting your face carefully, his breath fanning your face slightly. You look at him mesmerised for more seconds than you would’ve liked and then straighten up, his hand leaving your back and then straightening up again, looking down at you, still waiting for an answer.
‘You have to tell him NOW.’ are the words that keep repeating in your head, the rational part of your brain yelling at you that if you don’t talk to him about it now you will keep postponing it.
‘What if you will ruin your friendship? Who will have to find a new place to stay? What if it will make things awkward? Just come up with something!’ is saying the insecure part of your brain, which usually overpowers any other thought you might have.
But not this time.
You are tired of hanging on to false hope.
Sure, you wanted to talk about it when you got home or maybe tomorrow, but things don’t always go the way we plan.
“Why are you doing this?” you say while looking somewhere behind him. He lets out a confused ‘hm?’, tilting his head slightly, seeing with the corner of your eye how much he looked like a puppy. Oh you’re about to break your own heart.
“All the recent touches, the public affection, all the whispered and muffled things you say that some I can hear. Why are you doing this?”
Silence. Yunho tenses up slightly.
“We’ve always been close, sure, but not this close. At least in my opinion. And don’t get me wrong, I love every second of it but…” you say, taking a deep breath in. What you’re about to say can change your entire relationship. You exhale.
“I know you probably caught on that I like you more than a friend, or probably Mingi told you. But giving me all this false hope in the past weeks has been a double edged sword, because I’m so certain you don’t mean these things the way I wish you did, which is fine. But I’ve been indulging in them, and it hurts.” you continue, feeling a knot forming in your throat and tears filling up your eyes, making them burn.
Still nothing from him. You’re starting to feel anxious.
“I hope this won’t make things awkward between us, I don’t want us to stop being friends or housemates, but could you please stop giving me false hope? It might be fun for you, but I don’t know how much longer I can stand it for.” you say, letting the tears softly fall from your eyes, caressing your cheeks as they fall. You finally look at him. You are done with your speech and waiting for his move now. You said everything, and you feel relieved and burdened at the same time as you wait for a reply, a small part of you hoping for the impossible, hoping that he feels the same way you do. You let out a shaky breath.
His eyes are glossy, he has his lips slightly parted and a confused frown. Yunho opens his mouth a bit more and you close your eyes, as if waiting for a physical impact that his words might have.
“Y/N…” he says as his hands reach for yours. You squeeze your eyes shut. While Yunho is holding your hands gently, he brings them up to his lips and kisses your knuckles, making you open your eyes in surprise. “I’m sorry I made you believe I was toying with you. Or that I made you believe I wasn’t in love with you all this time.” he says and Yunho’s hands let go of yours, making your arms fall limp next to your body. “...What?” you say confused, looking at him bewildered.
Yunho’s big hands cup your face, stopping the tears that gathered around your jaw and with his thumb wiping away any other tears that stained your cheeks. He was slightly leaning over you, you were looking up at him with your eyes teary and shiny and he swore he could see stars in them. He smiles softly at you, caressing your cheek, but you're frozen, trying to make sense of what was happening.
“Can I kiss you?” Yunho asks as he leans in more, his forehead almost touching yours, completely towering over you. Your eyes widen. Is this real? Are you imagining it? Is this a dream? You couldn’t care less. You nod your head as you still haven’t found your voice to talk again.
And Yunho wastes no time, leaning in and connecting your lips. And it felt so good, electrifying, sending waves of shocks in your entire body. You were overwhelmed in the best way possible. One of Yunho’s hands travels down to the side of your neck while the other one remains on your face. Yunho was going at your pace, his soft lips following your moves and letting you take the lead and adjust.
You pull away slightly, raising your hands to the back of his neck and making him stick his forehead to yours, making him lean more over you as you were standing on your tippy toes. He pecks your lips once, getting a giggle out of you.
“I’m so sorry I hurt you, it really wasn’t my intention. I was trying to make it obvious that I also like you. I was planning on telling you, but I didn’t know when and how and I was overthinking it and spiralling even though I knew you felt the same way and despite ev-” he rambles as he tried to put some space between you two but you drag him back in in a deeper kiss this time. You gently bite his bottom lip, letting him know to open his mouth, which he does immediately, and so your tongue meets his eager one. The kiss is slow, in a way experimental but full of promise, getting used to each other, exploring freely. Until you run out of air and you two have to pull away, panting for air.
“You can be so dumb at times.” you say in a lighthearted tone as you let go of your grip on the back of his neck and go in for a hug, your arms circling his waist and pulling him close, with your head pressed on his chest, feeling his heartbeat. Just like a few weeks ago when you picked him up from the airport.
“Says the one that got flustered over every touch I gave them and got jealous when I mentioned Yoko. Are you not the same person that screamed in their pillow like a teenage girl when I told them I love them two weeks ago?” Yunho teases you as he rests his chin on top of your head. You playfully slap his back in response while your cheeks were heating up. So he heard you… Embarrassing.
You stay like that for a bit, hugging him tightly, every once in a while rocking back and forth, Yunho placing kisses on the top of your head while playing with your hair. “I love you, Yunho. So much.” you say as you look at the pavement. You feel his heartbeat pick up and you smile. Cute. “I love you too, princess.” he replies and he squeezes you.
“I wanted to have this talk with you at home not in the middle of the street but I guess this works too…” you say as you pull away, looking up at him in admiration. He brings one of his hands up to your face and fixes your hair. “Let’s go home then.” Yunho replies as he takes a hold of your hand and interlocks your fingers, rubbing circles with his thumb on your hand and starts walking towards your house.
“I’m already there.” you reply, more for yourself, as you look at your intertwined fingers. You’ve been waiting so long for this moment.

It was so dark. Mingi was standing in the middle of nothingness and everything surrounding him was pitch black, with occasional faceless people bumping into him and making him stumble, almost fall on to the ground, scared of what could’ve happened if he did fall. All Mingi managed to do was stare down and take little steps forward, but the mass of people pushed him back and made all his efforts pointless. He was starting to feel a lump in his throat as he was getting more frustrated with it all. Why is it that no matter how hard he tried to push forward, more people swarmed in to push him back. He felt like screaming, but the moment he opened his mouth no noise was leaving his throat, instead the faceless beings next to him started letting out a painful, loud screech, which made Mingi cover his ears and squeeze his eyes shut as he fell to the ground, the ringing in his ears continuing, the very same ringing waking him up from his nightmare, instantly standing up from his bed and reaching for his phone. It was just another nightmare, unfortunately not the first one he woke up from tonight, however Yunho was the one to wake him up from this one.
He looked outside the window and it was sunny outside. The night has passed, so the chain of interrupted sleep can at last be broken. Mingi zones out watching the wind blow through the leaves in the trees as the phone that was in his hands stopped ringing only to start again a second later. Yunho again. Mingi instantly answers the call, trying to steady his breathing so that his friend doesn’t get worried. Yunho thinks Mingi’s nightmares were dying down.
“Did I wake you?” asks Yunho, obviously trying to contain his excitement, Mingi observed, while he was still somewhat zoned out, mindlessly watching the scenery outside his bedroom window. “No, did something happen?”
“Did you check your emails?” asks the older boy while smiling like crazy, looking at the screen of his laptop. Mingi rubs the sleep off his eyes with one hand while with the other hand he removes the phone from his ear and checks his emails, the sight making him gasp.
Congratulations! After having seen your online audition that you sent two weeks ago, we would like to get to know you more and see what you can do in person!
Please prepare a rap or a song to sing and be aware that we will ask for you to perform a free style dance!
Let us know when you would be available for this. Have a good day, signed KQ Entertainment Recruitment Team.”
“No way.” is all Mingi manages to say. Becoming a trainee and debuting as an idol has been his and Yunho’s dream for the longest time, but now that it’s so close to his reach he’s terrified. What if he fucks it up, what if he touches this dream and it breaks under his finger tips.
“We are so close, Mingi. So close that I find it hard to believe. We just have to get past this step and we will be trainees. Isn’t that amazing?” says Yunho excitedly, pacing around the room, being so full of energy and feeling like he could burst at any second.
In a perfect world Mingi would be genuinely excited with him, and one part of him is still excited, but fear and anxiety are overwhelming him and have been overwhelming him so much more as time went by. When they were kids, they would talk so often about debuting together, it actually felt real and doable. But Yunho grew up to become this sociable and talented person, with an amazing and stable voice and incredible dancing skills and body control, not even to mention his breathtaking visuals, while Mingi felt like he didn’t bring anything new to the table. Sure, he was praised by some people for his rapping and dancing style, but what was the point if he didn’t believe it? There were so many other rappers in the industry, why would he be anything new and special?
But telling Yunho that he actually has given up was something that he couldn’t do. This was their shared dream, one of them giving up would mean that they both gave up, and breaking Yunho’s hope was something Mingi couldn’t do.
“I didn’t expect them to reach out after the first half…” Mingi whispered while still looking at the email. He was so conflicted. “Don’t say that. Of course you passed the first half, you have everything it takes to debut, Mingi-ya.” says Yunho and Mingi could already see him frowning at him. There was no point in arguing with Yunho, especially on this topic.
“Are you coming to today’s dance class?” asks Yunho. For the past year and a half the two of them have been going to all sorts of dance classes in attempts to get better. That’s also when Mingi was starting to lose confidence: noticing how everyone else around him was doing better so effortlessly, his best friend included. He really didn’t wanna go today, not after the nightmare he just had. “Yes, of course.” is all he managed to let out.
“Great! I will come pick you up so we can go together. Will be there in an hour.” and then he hangs up.
Mingi lays back in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. Why are the nightmares more often and stronger than before? He has to be getting better. If not for his sake, for Yunho’s sake. He would get so worried and concerned hearing about Mingi’s nightmares and felt so useless as the thought of not being able to help him in any way, so much so that it made Mingi feel guilty for not being easy to help and deal with.
Mingi let out a deep sigh and got out of bed, making his way to the bathroom to take a shower and get ready for the dance class. Mingi felt like in a trance whenever he did all these common tasks, like he was in autopilot mode and momentarily left his body to work on its own while his mind would wander someplace else. As of late, it especially happens more often than not, but he tried to keep it in check while he was with Yunho. Yunho would notice if something was off, he always does. Yunho is too observant for Mingi to even try and hide anything from him.
And just like that, the hour passes by and Mingi is brought back to awareness by Yunho calling him. He doesn’t answer the phone, instead he just grabs his backpack with the change of clothes and water bottle and rushes outside, seeing Yunho from the window.
Once he gets outside he is pulled in a quick hug by Yunho and then they start making their way to the class.
It was a quiet walk. And that’s something Mingi really appreciated about Yunho, the fact that they didn’t have to force conversations. Their friendship was so much more deeper than words and they both understood that. However conversations were the only thing that kept Mingi awake and engaged in reality, and silence, especially when he got little to no sleep, such as today, only made him completely unaware of his surroundings, which was what he hated most to happen when near Yunho.
“Mingi-ya, are you listening?” is what brings Mingi back, Yunho’s hand resting on Mingi’s shoulder, both of them stopped walking. Yunho searches Mingi’s face with slight concern in his eyes and Mingi just shakes his head and puts on a reassuring smile. “Yes I’m sorry. I just didn’t sleep that much tonight. Sorry, what were you saying?” the boy asks, trying to pass by the reason why he didn’t pay attention to what his best friend was saying.
“Nightmares are back?” asks Yunho worried, squeezing his friend’s shoulder right after. ‘They never left to begin with.’ is what Mingi wanted to say but couldn’t. Saying that would have Mingi admit that he lied to Yunho Mingi just nodded defeated. “Then why did you agree to come to the dance class? You should’ve stood this one out and rested instead.” slightly scolds Yunho.
“No way I give you the opportunity to get too ahead of me! It’s fine, dancing will wake me up. Come on, we’ll be late.” and with that Mingi starts walking, being a few steps ahead of his friend.
“Did you think about what to prepare for the next step of the audition?” Yunho asks once he is caught up with Mingi, lightly bumping his shoulder to his friend’s, an excited smile plastered on his lips. Right, the audition. “Not yet. It still hasn’t hit me that I passed the first stage. I had no doubts about you though. What am I even supposed to do now? Call them? Email them to set a date for the second stage? Did they decide the date on their own and they will just let me know? How is it-” Mingi rambles with questions that are clouding his mind, but Yunho is quick to shush him before he loses his mind with all these questions.
“Let’s take them one at a time. I have a few options as for my audition, but I will need your help to pick one. And what I did was just email them to ask when the audition will take place and they replied shortly that they will call at some point this week and discuss it over the phone. And of course you passed the first stage, what are you talking about? You will even pass the second. Don’t forget the promise we made to each other, hm? You’re not one that breaks promises now, are you Mingi?” says Yunho while trying to somewhat ease Mingi’s mind, seeming to have worked a bit. Yunho then puts an arm around his friend’s shoulders and pulls him closer to him, to some extent to cheer his friend up but to also reassure him that he will also be there for him and he can safely lean on him when needed.
The rest of the walk was silent, which was nice and comforting. Yunho at times would hum the songs he was thinking to audition with, providing the walk with some background music, which also made Mingi stay aware of his surroundings, suppressing his yawns whenever he felt like one was approaching. The two take the last left and then have in sight the dance studio.
“You sure you don’t wanna sit this class out?” asks Yunho once more while stretching with the whole class, looking concerned and Mingi’s tired eyes. “Why are you trying to shoo me away? You're afraid I will steal your title of main dancer?” teases Mingi with a challenging smile on his lips, which also makes Yunho loosen up. Surely Mingi is okay and Yunho is worried for nothing.
“I am actually. Give your all and I will give my all. First to pass out, buys dinner.” says Yunho confidently, now standing up and stretching his hand out towards Mingi, waiting for his friend to shake it and make this bet official. “Get your money ready.” and with that Mingi shakes Yunho’s hand, a big smile on his lips. Maybe he can debut after all, maybe he is worthy.
Mingi was so excited and overfilled with hope of debuting with his friend that he didn't notice straight away that he was getting lightheaded. He didn't mind the way his breathing got heavier and how his vision got blurry. He didn't mind the way he was unable to move his limbs consciously, he felt like a marionette while following the instructor's indications on the moves, and he certainly didn't mind when he closed his eyes and his body hit the cold wooden floor of the dance class. He did in fact pass out. Last thing he heard before falling into unconsciousness was Yunho screaming his name while trying to soften his fall. Because the truth is that Yunho was keeping his eyes on Mingi the entire time, in a way maybe expecting this to happen. He does know Mingi best, at times it seems that Yunho knows Mingi more than Mingi knows himself.
Mingi was once again dreaming, but this time he was alone in what seemed to be a waiting room, it felt extremely eerie. He was sitting on a chair and around him there were a bunch of closed doors. He got up and tried to open them, but none of them budged. The silence was becoming deafening, each step he took becoming more and more loud, banging on every door and pushing himself on it, hoping it would maybe at least break, but no luck.
Mingi was starting to get more frustrated by the second, his forehead was now stuck on the door, banging with his fists on the dark brown wood, but with every other bang he would grow more tired, his breathing heavy and throat sore from all the yelling, his face red and some tears staining his cheeks. Suddenly the door opens and he takes a step back, straightening his back, the person in front of him startling and confusing him. He was more scared by each second that passed. The person in front of him was still him, but slightly deformed. “When will you give up, Song Mingi?” is what the figure repeats, while still standing in place. Mingi takes a step back trying to put more distance between him and his clone, but with each step he takes back, the figure takes another forward, imitating Mingi's mannerism, but never actually touching him. Mingi shuts his eyes closed, wishing to disappear from this moment, hoping that maybe not seeing the figure would help him escape.
“You should wake up now.” whispers the figure and when Mingi opens his eyes seconds later he sees the ceiling of the dance studio. Awake again. The figure’s voice kept echoing in Mingi’s head again and again, until the voice distanced and became an echo and then a whisper until it fully vanished from Mingi’s mind, making it seem as if it never happened.
Mingi turns his head to the side, confused and slightly scared of maybe seeing the figure again, but he sees Yunho instead. Mingi squeezes his fist, digging his nails into his palm, a habit he picked up during the time he had nightmares very often, the pain he would feel was what made the difference for him between reality and dream. His palms were rough from the amount of times he managed to break skin, having faint half moons on his palms. He was awake now. He loosens the grip, putting his hand palm down on his thigh. Yunho hears the movement and turns around, now facing Mingi. Mingi saw as some of Yunho' worry from his eyes melted away, some of it turning into some sort of annoyance.
“What happened?” Mingi asks as he puts his weight on his elbows as he tries to stand but fails due to his head spinning. Of course he knew he passed out, but playing dumb is the only thing he can do now. Maybe he won’t be scolded that much.
“Take a wild guess. When I said the first to pass out I didn't mean it literally. Did you even eat anything today?” Yunho said irritatedly, his voice ever so slightly raised. Ok maybe Mingi won’t escape the scolding.
Yunho examines Mingi’s face carefully this time, slight panic still visible in his features, Mingi’s body visibly tense, Yunho catching on that his friend had another nightmare in his brief state of unconsciousness which makes Yunho uneasy as well, guilt of not being able to help him the way Mingi needs it overfilling Yunho. Yunho’s features gradually soften.
Mingi tries to act as calm as he could, trying to make it look as if he is all better now. He straightens his back and rests it on the wall behind him, quickly noticing that they are still in the dance class, now empty. “The instructor was worried and said we can stay here until you recover.” answers Yunho quickly when he sees the slight confusion on Mingi's face. He then hands Mingi his water bottle and he takes it gratefully.
Mingi sighs defeated. “I didn't but it wasn't my intention. The nightmare I had took everything out of me and it left me feeling numb. It simply slipped my mind.” Mingi wasn’t exactly lying. Whenever he enters autopilot mode he doesn’t need anything, it’s as if he’s self sustained, and it doesn’t hit him until someone reminds him or if something happens.
Yunho just looks at Mingi's face, with his frustration and concern filled eyes and just sighs, now sitting up straight and stretching his hand towards Mingi to help him get up. “Fine. Then let's go fix that. Come on, let's go eat.” is what he says and starts walking, Mingi a few steps behind.

You rest your head on the cold window of the bus and sigh, the window getting a bit foggy from the hot breath that left your lips. Today was horrible for so many reasons and you don’t even know where to begin.
It could be that you ran late for work today and got scolded by your boss and your team leader, but in the morning while you were running after the bus a car passed you so fast that splashed water on your light coloured suit pants given that it snowed all week and there was dirty melted snow everywhere, you just hope you didn’t catch a cold. And given that you were very late to work, you had to stay overtime and get everything done. Thankfully it was a Friday and you have the whole weekend to destress and prepare mentally for a new week.
While you were watching out the window and waiting for your stop, it hit you why your day was so bad: your boyfriend wasn’t home to wish you to have a good day today. He was out walking your dog. That is totally it. You feel silly thinking it but it makes complete sense. You will have a talk with him when you see him.
Once you are one bus stop away from the station you have to get off at, you stand up and almost fall when the driver suddenly pushes the break and then hear a bunch of car honks, causing you to have a headache. You hold on to the bar with all your might, but you still hit your hip on one of the seats because of the sudden break. At last your stop comes right after and you get off, glad that this day was finally coming to an end.
You walk the three minutes that are in between the bus station and your house and you see the lights on in the living room, tears gathering at the corner of your eyes at the thought of you finally getting to see your boyfriend. Your trembling hands look for the keys in your backpack and once you find them you unlock the front door. You quickly take off your shoes that were dirty from all the dirty water that was splashed on them and leave your backpack on the floor and hang your coat, making quick steps towards the living room where you assumed your boyfriend would be at. And you were right.
The first thing you see once you enter the room is your boyfriend laying on the couch with the remote in his hand, fast asleep, with your puppy (a 5 months old golden retriever that you initially didn’t want, but you could not say no to your boyfriend’s puppy eyes) laying on his chest, also fast asleep. You smile at the sight and the tears you were holding in up to that point break out and fall down your face. You could really use Yunho’s hugs right now, but you don’t want to disturb his sleep, even though he would be upset if he found out that you were needing him and didn’t wake him up, but that’s a problem for later.
You make your way towards the couch and take the nicely-folded blanket that was hanging from the couch’s headrest and you quietly unfold it while wiping away your tears and sniffling your nose. You were about to put the blanket over the two of them until the universe once again wasn’t on your side and your phone that was in your back pocket of your pants falls with a very loud thud, making the puppy wake up and start barking, jumping off of Yunho who was slowly waking up from his sleep startled, rubbing his eyes.
You were trying to make the puppy calm down, repeating multiple times “Milo please quiet. Calm down” in an attempt to not wake up your boyfriend, but once you see Yunho adjusting his eyes to the light, you sigh defeated and put the blanket aside and sit on the couch, quickly wiping your tears once again, before your boyfriend could see them.
The puppy was now on your lap, wagging his tail happily that you were finally home. With the corner of your eye you look at your boyfriend who is now standing up and stretching his limbs. He looks at your profile and then he frowns, now sitting on the ground in front of your legs so he could face you and see your face, cupping your cheek and dragging your face towards him so he could see you better, his thumb stopping some of the tears. Oh no.
“Hi baby. Slept well?” you ask him, in a pathetic attempt to play it off as cool. He quickly inspects your features and then checks over the rest of your body, noticing your dirty pants and trembling hands that were trying to hide in the puppy’s fur.
“Sweetheart what happened?” he asks while his thumb was rubbing slow circles on your cheek, his eyes worriedly and lovingly looking into yours. You try to look away and avoid his piercing gaze. “Tell me baby, let me help you, hmm?” he continues in a soft voice, desperately trying to meet your gaze. And that was the moment that everything you were holding back up to that point crumbled. His puppy eyes were too much for you and made it impossible for you to not break down.
You let out a pathetic sob before basically jumping on him, now the both of you are sitting on the ground. You wrap your arms around his neck and let out all your frustrations of the day, while his hands were quick to wrap around your waist, one of his hands going up and down your back trying to calm you down, repeatedly whispering into your ear “It’s okay baby, I’m here now. Let it all out. Nothing can hurt you now, I’m here.”. To be quite honest, his soothing words were only making you cry more.
After what seemed to be an eternity of crying in Yunho’s arms, with Milo sleeping on the couch next to your heads, you slowly pull away from his tight hug, looking at him. You could feel how red and puffy your eyes were and you could see his heart break the moment he saw you like this. You wiped away the residue of the tears with the back of your hand and let out an awkward laugh. “I’m sorry for jumping on you like that and dirtying your shirt. And I’m also sorry for waking you up, I really didn’t want to.” you say while pointing at the wet spot on his shirt where your tears were earlier landing on. Yunho just looks at you, with his messy brown hair slightly getting in his eyes and takes your hands into his.
“Never ever apologise for anything baby, please. It breaks my heart seeing you like this. Want to talk about what happened? Or would distracting you be more helpful? Did you eat? Are you hungry? Want me to run you a bath? God, I should’ve thought you’d be tired after a day of work, I’m sorry for not preparing anything…” he rambles while worriedly looking at you and you can’t help but let out a chuckle which stops Yunho from his train of thought. “...Was I rambling again?” he asks shily and you nod, making him smile. “Yeah, but it was cute.” you tell him and rest your head on his shoulder, letting out a sigh. “Can we cuddle?” you ask while your head was still on his shoulder.
Your boyfriend doesn’t reply, instead he stands up and lays on the couch, patting the empty spot that was next to him. His back rests on the huge pillows that are on the couch, and he opens his arms towards you. You smile at the sight and crawl into his arms, instantly wrapping your arms around his chest and as he wraps his arms around yours.
“Milo, come!” he says a bit louder and immediately after the puppy sleepily stands up and sits next to Yunho’s torso, resuming his sleep right after, at which you chuckle. Yunho looks at you and smiles fondly while you better rest your head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat calming you down.
“Today sucked.” you state while looking in the void. He hums, encouraging you to continue whenever you are ready to while he is caressing your head, occasionally playing with your hair. “I was late for work, was scolded for it and had to stay overtime, I got splashed with dirty water by a car, the ride back home was horrible, the computer kept crashing at work and had to redo the project sheet I was working on.” you let everything out, recalling everything that happened, Yunho’s arms and his scent being the only things that were keeping you from crying again. You take a deep breath in and when you exhale it comes out shaky.
“And everything happened because you didn’t wish me to have a good day this morning.” you say in a playful tone, trying to change the atmosphere, hearing him let out a choked laugh, which makes you laugh in return.
“Shit, you’re right…” is all he can say after thinking about this morning, retracing his steps and realising that he did not, in fact, wish you a good day. “Baby I am so sorry, it completely went over my head, I was too tired and focused on preparing Milo for the walk. I am so so sorry.” he states while whispering the ‘w’ word so that Milo doesn’t get excited, which you find cute, but pointless, as the puppy’s ears raised and looked at the two of you, wagging his tail. Yunho sighs and you laugh.
At this point you were fondly looking into his eyes, feeling how all your troubles were melting away in his touch and words.
“You’re so cute. Thank you for listening to my dumb problems.” you say as you once again nuzzle your head into his chest and hug him tightly, inhaling his cologne that now smelled like home to you. He grabs your chin with his thumb and pointer finger and forces you to look at him.
“They are not dumb problems, they are just problems. And I’m so sorry you had a bad day baby. I hope I can make this weekend the best for you.” he finishes his sentence by pulling you into a slow, lingering kiss, making you knees melt and bringing butterflies in your stomach. “Want me to run you a bath?” he asks after pulling away and kissing the tip of your nose.
“I think someone else is waiting for something though.” you say while looking at Milo who was now on the floor playing with his leash. You hear Yunho chuckle and it makes your heart flutter. You watch him as he looks at Milo biting and tugging at the leash and you feel as if your heart is about to explode from the love you carry for this man.
“Then I will run you a bath and in the meantime I will go walk Milo?” he asks and the puppy barks and jumps in circles after hearing his favourite word. Yunho looks at you and with one of your hands you reach for his forehead and push away the hair that was covering his forehead, caressing his face. The love you have for this man…
You take a glance at the window and you notice that it is now snowing outside. Your smile grows.
“No way I’m missing a walk with you and Milo when outside is snowing so beautifully. Let me change.” you say and quickly leave his embrace, not giving him any time to protest. You run to your shared room and quickly take off the dirty, uncomfortable clothes and change into a pair of sweats and one of Yunho’s hoodies. When you go back downstairs you see Yunho on the ground trying to tie his shoes, however Milo was interrupting him and either biting his hands or shoelaces, which makes you giggle. Adopting this puppy was the best decision you two have ever made.
“Come Milo! Let dad get ready for the walk.” you say as you try to distract the puppy, pulling him into your arms and letting him bite your hand playfully, giving Yunho enough time to put on his boots. Ater that the two of you switched duties so that you could put on your boots as well. Your boyfriend put on Milo’s coat and then helped you with your own.
“You sure you don’t wanna sit this walk out?” your boyfriend asks you once more before unlocking the door, at which you nod with a wide smile on your face. “I need this walk as much as Milo does.” you state and Yunho laughs. He kisses your forehead and hands you over Milo’s leash so he can unlock the door easier. You get outside and wait for Yunho to lock the door, admiring the way huge snowflakes were falling from the sky. When you look down you see Milo trying to bite them.
You are surprised by Yunho’s arms resting on your shoulders and pulling you into a back hug and you let out a surprised squeak. He kisses your cheek and then pulls away, taking Milo’s leash from your hands and offers you his arm to hold on to it while you walk together through the snowy night. You gladly take it and so the walk begins.
The street was silent, besides the occasional cars that were passing by and your steps on the freshly laid snow. You quickly reach the park you usually walk Milo in and you take off his leash, leaving him to run around the park freely, the two of you sitting on a bench while still having the hyperactive puppy in sight. You rest your head on your boyfriend’s shoulder and let out a deep breath, fog escaping your lips. You rub your cold hands together while breathing on them, in an attempt to warm them up.
When your boyfriend sees you struggling he takes off his scarf and wraps it around your neck and you instantly nuzzle into the warm material, inhaling his scent. He then takes your hands into his big, weirdly warm ones to warm up yours. He brings your hands to his lips and he kisses your fingers before breathing warm air on to them, making you blush and being grateful that the scarf and the cold were covering most of your face.
After your hands were all warmed up he urged you to put them in your pockets to keep them warm, which you do. Yunho then cups your face and his now slightly colder hands were caressing your cheeks, while he was looking into your eyes lovingly.
To him you were the prettiest person to ever exist in that moment: your cheeks and your nose were pink from the cold, lips slightly chapped from the change in weather, while you were wearing his scarf that was slowly getting covered in snowflakes, your hair being adorned with snowflakes as well. He really felt that in that moment he was falling in love with you all over again.
“Now, don’t you dare catch a cold, yes? I want you to stay happy and healthy with me. I have plans for this weekend to help you destress, ok?” he softly says, saying the first question in a more warning tone. His words make you smile and you nod, shifting your head so that you could kiss his palm, leaning into his touch afterwards.
“You’re beautiful, Yuyu. Inside and out.” you say while admiring his features. His very red cheeks and pink chapped lips, with big snowflakes all over his dark brown hair, made him look like he had stars on his head. You take out one of your hands from your pocket to ruffle his hair, snow rapidly falling from his head which makes you smile. “I love you so much, Yuyu, thank you for sticking by my side for so long.” are the words you let out before he pulls you into a hug and you are quick to hug him back, squeezing him tightly, while your eyes are fixed on the puppy that was either biting the snowflakes that were falling on him or jumping into piles of snow.
“Don’t get sappy now. I love you too. So much. Thank you for letting me stick to your side. I am not going to leave your side ever, you are stuck with me.”
“Oh no, the horror!” you sarcastically say and you can hear him chuckle. God how you love that sound. “Should we head home? It seems that Milo is getting tired as well.” you say while pointing to the puppy that was now slowly coming towards the two of you, exhausted from all the running and jumping.
Yunho stands up and picks Milo up after he brushes off all the snow that gathered on his coat. Milo rests his tiny head on Yunho’s arm and soon after falls asleep. “I really hope he won’t wake up in the middle of the night this time to bark at nothing.” you state while walking next to Yunho, burying your face into the scarf, looking for warmth. “Mhm. We should be fine tonight, he seems to be very tired.” Yunho states as he looks at the puppy in his arms, who was faintly wagging his tail in his sleep. Adorable.
Once you reach your front door again, your boyfriend tells you to get the keys from his coat’s pocket, and once you are inside your house he takes off Milo’s coat, quickly cleans the puppy’s paws and places him on his bed, putting a blanket on top of him. Only after he’s done with Milo does Yunho take off his shoes and coat, looking at you and sighing, resting his head on the wall behind him.
“The walk on this weather was beautiful but fuck, we are never staying this long on a snowy bench again.” he says and you giggle. While he is still leaning on the wall, his hands reach for your shoulders and pull you into one of his warm, bear hugs, resting his chin on the top of your head, your ear directly pressed over his chest, hearing his heartbeat slowing down.
“Are you feeling any better sweetheart?” he asks while slightly rocking left and right with you in his arms. You nod. “Yes, and it’s all thanks to you.” you admit and you can feel him smile.
“I will go run you a bath and then will cook something, does that sound good?” he asks after he pulls away a bit. You smile and nod, your whole body being overwhelmed with love for him. “Alright then. You just rest until the bath is ready, yes? Maybe think of what you’d like to eat.” Yunho says as he starts walking towards the living room while holding your hand, making you sit on the couch.
Yunho leans in and kisses the top of your head multiple times and then cups your face, pulling you into one of his slow, loving kisses, that was worth more than any amount of words in this world, making your stomach do flips. After that he leaves to prepare your bath.
You sit more comfortably on the couch and throw the blanket over your body to warm yourself up while thinking about the walk the two of you were on. A very tired Milo jumps on the couch and sits next to you, planning to continue his nap next to you. You smile and slowly pet the puppy. You were against the idea of getting him, but when Yunho was holding Milo in his arms, his eyes pleading that you accept him, you gave in, and to this day you are not regretting it, as seeing Yunho smile brightly every day is worth anything. Your heart is once again overwhelmed with the love you feel for him.
“So? What do you feel like having?” you hear Yunho’s voice from the kitchen and smile. You are insanely in love with this man.
