I am unable to recreate the amazing grain of the Arcana sprites, the grain i get with photoshop is weird, the overlay textures i tried really messes with the contrast... could you please help and give some advice or a little step by step guide for dummies?

Overlays mess with contrast when the overlay layer is too light or dark. If you want the texture and nothing else in your image, you want to use a perfect grey texture image. Complete midpoint between black and white and no saturation so only the subtle brightness variation of the texture will show.

From what I can tell, the texture overlay used in the game CGs does have colour, but it's still fairly desaturated and at the ~50% brightness to keep the colours consistent.

If the texture is still too much, lower the opacity. As you can see, I use ~50% opacity because I don't make the texture too noticeable.
