my friend hasn't really ever gotten into comics, which is fine, i never had money to afford them (and also little opportunity to buy them.) compendiums from secondhand shops are my friend.
x-men has had an endless number of reboots and retcons and whatever. it interests me to see what people do with the ghostly basics of story lines and characters. and what they don't do, which characters are incredibly interesting and somewhat fleshed-out, but that these reboots and cartoons seem to consistently avoid or tokenize.
maybe that's why i don't care about fanfic canon *as much* (although i get annoyed when a character is not at all resembling the character in original concepts.) x-men franchise, all of american long-running comics really, are basically just teams of artists pairing up with fanfic writers who get published on the official house name.
so anyways, i decided to go back and watch my fave live-action x-men movie. i hated the prequels tbh, and the 'days of future past' version where everyone is suddenly hot and young again (ahhhh the Black Widow treatment, one more reason to hate late 2000s-early 2010s cinema) but i liked the hated X2.
there was so much more they could have done there, but like the Simpsons, it was written as if viewers should already know a lot about the story and also like there didn't need to be continuity, in the way the Simpsons doesn't really need continuity, which was... jarring. it isn't Great. it's like if JJ Abrams did a Star Trek, but with X-Men.
but I liked that they pulled in Nightcrawler as a main character, instead of relegating him to "Catholic Magical Negro, but not Black, so it's okay." check out the 90s cartoon to see what I mean: he was in two episodes, and the first one that introduced him actually made his entire arc into a spiritual life lesson for wolverine. the other served no growth or change of character for him; it was a spiritual life lesson for mystique.
x2 shows him as an intelligent, sweet guy who is isolated through wounding. his "self harm" as an empowering choice made as a reaction to literally being demonized by others. he has an AMAZING action scene which really takes advantage of his full powers (of the time.) He tries to clear his name after someone (very skillfully) using him to attack the US president. unlike what they did to MY GIRL STORM*, they "let" him keep his german accent. also, alan cumming does speak german.
*storm, a kenyan princess who's dad is from harlem, was not allowed her south african speech patterns because Reasons. what, "people" couldn't understand her? S Africa made the character recognisably african while mericanized. but everyone is supposed to understand a german accent. s african english is practically england-english, are you fucking kidding me, but ANYWAYS (and also thank you Halle Berry for trying to push it and I am so sorry Hollywood did you dirty.)
x-men 97 was condensed into WAY TOO FEW episodes to explore *anything* but nightcrawler was there, *sometimes* even to be something besides the spiritual consolation/priest to others! he tri-wielded swords against super sentinels. so that was cool.
there could be a whole video essay on why i adore nightcrawler but 1) i am lazy/energy inefficient 2) i would need to learn how to do all that 3) i don't feel like it
ANYWAYS
sometimes whatever is playing while i sleep influences dreams i have
while it was very short, thanks to overheating and Eris the Destroyer, it was fun watching a 90-something year old (but multiply de-aged) man mentally go through the blue screen of death. You kids, BSOD is something that happened to windows a lot in the Before Times, look it up.
--------
the premise started out with waking in some kind of lab, like the perpetually-useful 'medical room' or hospital-type single bed and lots of equipment that the xavier mansion has for easy plot purposes.
i'd been in some kind of general mutant conflict, the kind that leaves regular fucking people with exploded houses and crushed cars and shit. nothing special. except that someone decided i was special because i grabbed him and told the cops/FoH (a hate group, like how IRL cops are sometimes also KKK or Proud Boys) he was my boyfriend and got seriously hurt in the conflict. i was believable enough so they let us go. i kind of remembered figuring out how to use the emergency number on his phone and not much after.
some person was in the room when i woke up. there were some general questions, they'll let me go soon, usual crap. then another guy came in and started asking very different questions, like who i knew, what happened, what was i thinking, did i know that guy was a mutant, do i have FoH contacts, why did they leave us alone instead of capturing us?
no one looks unordinary so far. no costumes, no powers noticeably used. everything hurts, no one would tell me where the fuck i am, the lights are too bright, and i'm getting more dead-set against whatever angle this guy is pushing.
i don't know anybody or anything. i saw a guy, he was hurt in one of the blasts from those douchebags fighting, i grabbed him, i ain't letting some fuckass cops take him for no reason. that's all. fuck you, fight me.
can't i tell he was a mutant? no, dumbass, sometimes people have disfigurements and disabilities, the fuck do i need strangers to explain themselves for? whether i knew or not is irrelevant. what are you, the feds? who wants to know?
"he had scales"
"okay? so he has a skin condition."
"a condition that gives you scales."
"i don't know! do i look like a fucking dermatologist?"
"....."
"it was dark. things were exploding. there was blood everywhere. i didn't pay attention."
so we got into this pissy little bitch argument. a couple other people come in and watch by the door, looking like fucking enforcers. this dude wants me to tell him what i know about this mutant brotherhood and how i contacted them, and eventually, where magneto is based because apparently everyone who's on the team has that info. and that seems like a massive security breach to me, but fuck it, i'm not their manager.
oh, and if i don't, he's going to kill me.
ooooh i'm terrified. dude hasn't laid a hand on me and it seems real villains would at least give me some decent drugs. k bro. couldn't even get me a fucking zofran but yeah, let's skip to torture.
hurry up. wait, lemme contact someone first so they can get my stuff out of the apartment before rent's due.
no, i really don't know. or care. none of this has anything to do with me and if it did, i still wouldn't give you shit, just on principle.
one of the people by the door leaves and comes back with some big older dude in a dramatic costume. oh, good, they brought the actual magnet guy from television. how thoughtful. ... did this dude bring me a manager? is that what happened? is magneto HIS manager or mine? my head hurts too much for this and if everyone could turn off the lights and lower their voices, that would be good.
he asked me something like what my job is, what i remembered. let me know that the other guy was going to be okay. first thoughtful thing anyone's told me yet. they have a quiet talk for a moment before someone comes over to check the monitors and release me.
this is the closest i'd come to having health insurance in months.
he isn't evil. not really. but if this is his hired help, the guy needs to be more intimidating. idk, do some market research. practice on office and retail workers or something.
"hey, am I free to go? Your goon-"
"i'm not a goon."
" -fine, that guy said he was going to KILL me if I didn't tell him where Magneto was. I've never met you, but I'm still alive."
Magneto looks like he's about to short-circuit.
(goon says something)
"YOU PROMISED. I am so disappointed in you."
"It was a test! We were testing you to see if you were a threat!" Guy is exasperated. Ok, so Magneto is supposed to be HIS boss in this scenario. got it.
"Yeah, and it looks like you failed, buddy. YOU said you'd kill me if I didn't hand him over, I didn't, and you did not kill me. You're the one who fucked up. How am I wrong."
Both of us look at Magneto. Magneto looks like he is about to have the worst headache of his life. Like he is too damn old to be dealing with squabbling children, and absolutely Cannot with the whole conversation. Like if he could crash the asteroid or wherever we are into the earth and just be Done with it, he would.
goon asks "……… are you seriously arguing on this."
"I'm a late 80s millenial from Florida. Yes." i look at his boss. "christ, Mag, is this what you put up with? I'd be a terrorist too, if I had to deal with this. Not that I think you're a terrorist. If anything, you all have been terrorized."
the helmet protects him from telepathy. wonder if it protects him from having an aneurysm.
i think i was going to be handed off and perhaps meet 'scales guy' (whose name i didn't ask) but i woke up too soon.
I am destashing a LOT of my things! I don't do nearly as much art anymore. Most clothes are getting less comfortable, too. I need to pare everything down to better manage it.

I feel no loss in listing things for sale. If I have any doubts, I just keep the item. Please don't feel like I'm "losing something." I'm really not! <3
I also added some items to ebay. Ebay has a longer listing process and more complicated categories, but a wider reach and more options for people who don't use mercari. <3
Pieces of old shirts and scraps of cheap felt. Entirely hand-stitched. Button + embroidery thread loop for closure. A shame I didn't have a lot of this to use; it's so, so soft. Well-worn fabrics often are.
Approx. 3.5in x 4in (or 8.5in, unfolded.)
I don't keep track of time because then the ADHD thing will say "IT TAKES TOO LONG!!! BORING! ABANDON AT ONCE!" and it'll go back into the "project drawer" forever.
Like unironically we should be subsidising at least 50% of their educations. What do you mean we have a shortage of doctors we should have surplus. What do you mean they’re being overworked they should be treated like royalty, they can fix human bodies
I don’t care if some of them are only doing it for the money. I don’t care if all of them are only doing it for the money. Intentions don’t matter to the stitches in my nana’s leg or the ten billion other lifesaving treatments we all get at a detriment to their finances and mental wellbeing. Entire cities are kept alive by just a couple thousand of them what are we DOINGGGGG
AND you should be able to become a doctor working no more than eight hours in a row and regularly getting eight hours of sleep. You should not have to sacrifice your own mental and physical wellbeing to become a doctor. I think that makes worse doctors actually.
back around march or so, i got a bunch of papers to fill out. i did that and submitted them online. it was an absolute hassle. they wanted me to go back through... i have to remember... (part of the reason I'm on disability...) EVERY doctor I've had for YEARS, all their info and what they treated me for, every job I've had in 10 years, etc.
good thing I keep that shit in an excel file.
last week, i got a letter that might be from wednesday. i get up to the mail hub every 2-3 days, so it isn't much earlier than wednesday, picked up on friday, 6/5.
it says I haven't filled out (unspecified) paperwork and unless I have it in by TODAY 6/8, they can cancel my disability payments.
there is no open paperwork on my online account. none. the site is actually pretty bare-bones for info, so it should have been easy to find. WHAT open paperwork?
i have been TRYING to call for an extension and to figure out wtf they're even talking about!
The phone number for the case worker doesn't have anyone answering, nor have I gotten a call back today. Calling the 'general number' without their extension doesn't reach anyone.
Calling the local office doesn't reach anyone AND the menus DON'T WORK!
That thing where it says "for this, press 2, for that, press 3..." Yeah, none of those actually work. What I can do is hit 1 to be sent a text link to set up an online account. I have that, thank you, it gives 0 answers, and also this is time-sensitive, innit.
so I called the office number a few times, trying different sequences in an attempt to get somewhere. no dice.
so now I'm calling the main SS call line. I typically wait 1-2 hours in these lines, or the phone hangs up on it's own because it's been on hold for too long.
most of the local offices now close at 4pm / 16:00. i don't know when "main social security" closes.
I started ~3pm. It's a few minutes to 4 now, so we'll see.
So. I called the main help desk. VERY fortunately, I got someone in only 20mins- highly unusual, but I'm grateful. They couldn't help but gave me a number for Determimations.
That office was actually very helpful and fast.
It looks like in late April, there was more paperwork and some doctors' offices never responded. That tracks. One of them took almost four months to resolve an insurance billing issue.
So the papers will be sent again. The caseworker will call by end of the week.
@fibro-memes posted this and yeah, I'm at the benefits stage.
Apparently I will get better from the genetic illness that tears apart everything in the body. Also these EXTENSIVE "redeterminations" are now to be done every year. Trump's admin is pushing for every 6 months.
i called SS Redeterminations again because it's been over a week and I haven't gotten that call back. I called the original office a few times and only left one or two messages.
Repeat messages clog voicemail boxes. Other people need to also leave those messages. Please do NOT leave a new message every single time you call these people. Maaaaybe leave one a week.
The second phone number I got last week actually reaches someone really quickly, and they looked into it.
-----
No new paperwork has arrived. It's been only 8 business days, but they insist that these letters arrive very quickly.
My last letter was dated 5/29, but arrived about 6/3 or 6/4. 6/5 was Friday. My deadline on there was before close on 6/8, which was Monday afternoon. SO. yeah lots of time there huh but OH-KAY. Yes, they are correct that 4 business days is decent arrival time. The gap between arrival time and response time is Lacking.
----
Why wasn't any of this in the My Social Security portal?
Because they do not have access to anything on the Social Security website.
The Social Security Disability Redeterminations division has NO ACCESS to the Social Security website.
These are the people who can completely cut off my disability pension.
Which might also explain lack of callbacks.
With T-mobile, I had this issue where any doctors' or government office would call from an Avaya or Genysis system, which protects sensitive numbers for privacy by generating random 'mask' numbers, just like Google Phone. T-mobile has an internal spam filter that auto-blocks these. I cannot take that off. It is separate from their spam blocking service. No call would show in the call log. The phone would never ring. I would only know if I got a VM left- but the callback info either wouldn't work, or it would be far too late.
For example, one of my doctors would do phone calls if video quality was poor or a patient was unable to use it. But when T-mobile blocked the docs' outbound number, the masked one, I would "miss my appointment" by not picking up a call I never got. I'd have to call the OFFICE number back and make another appointment. Rinse, repeat.
So maybe that's the problem? Different carrier, same thing.
Nope, they don't use those anymore.
Okay. So..... .. .. .....? I usually leave the phone number multiple times on the same message, prefacing it slowly with "My number is..."
My phone number was changed over a year ago on the Social Security website. It's updated on other SS paperwork. Redeterminations does NOT have that info because they do not have access to it. They have info from years ago, the last time they reviewed my case.
Which means that even though I also left the current number on voicemails, they may only be calling the 'official' authorized number on my account AS THEY KNOW IT.

When planning hang outs with your friends or acquaintances, try to be considerate of other's budgets. Unless you're positive someone can comfortably afford something, don't invite friends and acquaintances to expensive places or events unless you're offering to pay for them.
Often if someone is struggling financially, they already feel self conscious about it, and inviting them to places and events they can't afford can be embarrassing and make them feel worse about their financial situation.
It's also not a good feeling to be excluded from hanging out with your friends because you can't afford to.
So if you know your friend or acquaintance is struggling, invite them to places that are cheap or free, or offer to pay for them.
In some places, social decorum used to dictate that whoever invited is supposed to pay, so if you invited friends to go to a cafe or bar you were supposed to pay for their drinks. That's typically not expected anymore in most places, so depending on where you live, you don't have to stress about not being able to invite friends out for coffee or drinks if you're unable to afford paying for someone else.
However, if you can afford it, it's still a kind and polite gesture to offer to pay for your friends if you were the one who invited them out. Especially because you're less likely to hurt the pride of a financially struggling friend if you insist you're only paying for them because it's good social decorum that whoever invited is the one who should pay.
If setting up a big open Thing, where 5-6 people or more are invited, I'll set up an "event" on facebook or meetup.com and screenshot the details for those not on the platform.
This makes it less personal, when the event isn't one-on-one, but it also removes you from some anxiety on remembering everything. Everyone gets the same information, from the same sources, and you can read it to make sure you put everything you wanted to in the post. It also clears up who pays for what, without you having to broach that topic personally. Anyone who isn't interested can just click out.
In the details, there should be:
Event name (lunch get-together at sushi place!)
Location
Address
Phone number
Date / Time - end time
Hey, everyone, I haven't seen you all in awhile! I wanted to go to a local business since I'm in that area.
They have (list of a few things that might appeal to different people, like vegetarian, cooked food, raw fish, etc.) I do not feel like it's celiac-safe, though.
Please arrive by (time) so we can order together!
Each person covers their own cheque, please.
-----
If you really really want a particular person there, and you can (comfortably) pay for them, send them a message PRIVATELY to tell them you'll cover them.
That way, you avoid embarrassing them AND you don't have to tell everyone else that you'll pay for ONE person but not anyone else. No favourites or anything.
and ffs, that one person from your group who ALWAYS forgets their wallet or can't get their apple pay to work or who only pays their own bills after no one else did and they look Surprised every time???
do not invite them to things.
see what happens when you do not invite them to things that require payment from ANYWAYS. not even ONE drink. see what they're like when YOU'RE the one who forgot your wallet.
see how they talk to you when they're not just padding a conversation to ask you for stuff.
Started the Stampede on Smalls, a subscription cat food.
1) I don't like subscriptions. I just want to order what I want, when I want.
2) Their Sampler is a discount price, but there are add-ons auto-selected, just like with Hungry Root.
3) The unskippable "donation" at the end. Uh, I am on SSI and feed several animals. Are you going to sponsor me?
BUT the vet suggested it may help his pretty severe digestive issues. What am I to do? He is my lead Pizza Inspector (even if he isn't a taste-tester.)
It finally arrived.
4/10 items are missing. Great start!
Ahhh giving me HungryRoot vibes already. They constantly sent wrong items, food that's gone bad or that goes bad in only a day or two, didn't send things...
and I do NOT have time to constantly inventory and pursue their customer service, THEN work for a discount (taking photos, writing full complaints, hoping they believe it, hoping they refund/resend...) THEN checking back to see if they DID the Thing they said they would.
In this case, Smalls is refunding the four unsent items. I'm not sure how much that actually is? 4 items normal price, or 4 items deeply-discounted Sampler price? CxServ doesn't say. The refund will arrive within 7 days, so I need to remember to check in 7 days to see if they did that.
I hate subscriptions.
Another reason to NEVER subscribe to ANYTHING if you don't have far more than needed on credit, which is the only way you should pay for anything online anyways. Your bank does not protect you. Check. Mine will dispute charges... for $35 each...
I have a lot of EXPENSIVE inks listed! Of course I'll break the lot if there are only certain colours you want.
A lot of stamps, including a few die cut stencils for cards, journals, agendas, notes, and more.
Lastly, a 5.5oz stack of paper samples, stickers, washi tape, memo sheets, die cuts, and more. There's a lot of Pride stickers, rainbow stickers, and more. Build pages using your colours, your friends' colours, and for whoever or whatever you like.
PSA: AI is everywhere. Check your medical records OFTEN.
Almost every office I go to is now required by corporate to use AI transcribers. Regardless of what CCHFreedom says, that use is buried in the paperwork you sign before every visit. It's usually in the Privacy notices and consent sections. If you don't or can't read them, you don't notice it.
Besides the ENTIRE privacy and data mining problem, it's an immediate issue for every patient.
It is not a doctor's choice. If they want to keep their jobs, they do what corporate says.
Yes, I can (sometimes) opt-out. No, they do NOT always have to treat me if I do. The paperwork insinuates that it's like any other TOU: if you don't like the rules, find another provider.
For y'all healthy-ish people, YOU don't have a problem. You will go somewhere else. If your records are wrong, you can probably sort it out. You might see two doctors a year.
That's great!
I see half a dozen a month. Sometimes more.
There are maybe a handful of doctors in three counties that I can see for some disorders. I may have to go across the state for a minor surgery... when I find a doc and get my insurance on board.
I do not have the luxury of seeing a different rheumatologist with another group if I want to. Also the Other Group also uses AI transcribers now.
Check your damn records.
This is for YOUR safety but also so insurance has less to deny.
Across just two or three office visits, I have become a 54(?) year old man who is in my 30s and also AFAB, and apparently I injured my ribs in a fall, necessitating an orthopaedic hand therapist. (WRIST, not ribs.)
Yeah, yeah, "but- but- the doctors are really at fault!!! They're supposed to read it!!!" With what fucking time.
You know who notices that? My insurance company. Who has all the fucking time in the world.
The REASON these AI transcribers are required by the company is to "save time." Because doctors are only given a few minutes for notes because insurance companies want to push more patients into exceedingly small appointment times.
So INSTEAD OF TYPING THE CORRECT THING THE FIRST TIME, they now have to use these stupid fucking AI programs to write things *incorrectly,* GO BACK, re-read everything in SECONDS, look for errors that could be anywhere, and fix it.
And if they don't, that isn't the AIs fault! It's THEIRS!
Companies do this to "maximise profits." I bet insurance companies push it to get more revenue in copays, and also because it increases chances of total denial of payment. They all make huge profits while WE suffer.
I don't know why there's a constant problem with doctors quitting or people going into any other fucking field.
A bunch of handmade jewellery I kept from running Perthro's, plus some other handmade and vintage items I've acquired over the years. I rarely wear jewellery- ever. Why do I keep buying shiny things? haaa~ I think I've (mostly) learned my lesson!

It looks like in late April, there was more paperwork and some doctors' offices never responded. That tracks. One of them took almost four months to resolve an insurance billing issue.
So the papers will be sent again. The caseworker will call by end of the week.
