Honestly, I don't understand what they were trying to do with M11. That ship had potential at the beginning, I don't deny it, but instead of developing them, they spent 3 seasons showing how terrible they are for each other. In the comics and books they keep trying to paint them in a positive light. Netflix promotes them as love story. In the script, even in the season 5 trailer, they had some cute moments, like holding hands, which were ultimately cut. The script also didn't include "the real me" and ET makeover montage, and they didn't make Finn vomit in Millie's mouth. So, what's going on? Like, it's not even about byler. They used byler to humiliate and torture Will, we already got it. But what was their plan with mileven? I genuinely don't understand. The only thing that makes at least a little bit of sense is that they hated it but Netflix insisted on keeping them as the main couple to please GA.
This love story makes no sense to me.
Did they really sit there writing season 1 like “yeah they’re gonna be separated every season and we’re also gonna make nobody like their relationship and make them break up so El can be independent and show her being much happier than before, but then we’re gonna force her back into her toxic relationship and make them even more toxic. And then let’s make Will give Mike a painting and make Will confess his feelings for Mike but make it sound like it’s Els feelings and make that painting and words be what makes Mike say I love you to El but we’re never gonna bring up the painting again or have Mike know the truth. And then let’s make them have no romantic moments but still make El say Mike understands her the best despite disproving that all last season, and let’s also make her death about Mike cause we’re misogynists who hate women and think they should have no personality besides their boyfriends”
The kiss they deserved = the kiss we deserved
Happy Byler day everyone!!! 💛💙

"The idea made me horny" is a good enough reason to write anything.
When they’ve been at a party for a while and Will’s battery is running low, Will likes to cuddle up against Mike to signal that he’s ready to go home.
The mistakes of Game of Thrones vs Stranger Things (they're the same)
It still BLOWS my mind to think about how the cast and crew referenced Game of Thrones so much when they talked about the end of st, and how they felt that their ending wouldn't make the same mistakes. And then they made the. exact. same. mistakes that the fans of GoT were mad about.
Game of Thrones hyped up the battle with the Night King for the entire series, and then they beat him and his army in one episode (roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes) vs Stranger Things (who must've said "hold my beer, I think we can beat that") where the Mind Flayer (the villain who should have been the most difficult to beat based on earlier seasons) was beaten in what, 6 minutes? And Vecna went down ridiculously easy as well. The whole "battle" was litterally over in a couple of minutes.
Game of Thrones killed off their main heroine who the fans had spent years rooting for. A girl who'd been put through abuse and been hunted for what she was born as, yet she constantly fought for others, vs Stranger Things, who..... killed off their main heroine who the fans had spent years rooting for. A girl who'd been put through abuse and been hunted for what she was born as, yet she constantly fought for others. The only good thing here is that they didn't give El a villain arc before she died like the one that was given to Daenerys. But let's instead throw in a little twist that she just might be alive, leaving the fans to never know the truth in the end. Sooo satisfying!!!
Game of Thrones spent unnecessary time on building character arcs and relationships only to nuke them in the end. Jaime Lannister was given one of the most interesting and progressive character developments of the show, and fans were rooting for him to stay with Brienne, which would have made his character arc come to a beautiful and well-earned conclusion. Yet, they chose to nuke that relationship and their development completely only for him to go back to Cersei. They also spent time to build something between Arya and Gendry (another ship many of the fans were rooting for) only for it to mean nothing in the end, leaving fans disappointed. Vs Stranger Things, which spent a ridiculous amount of time in season 4 and the beginning of season 4 on developing character relationships which seemed to build toward something interesting and progressive only for it to... not happen. Probably millions of fans thought they were building a romantic relationship between Mike and Will, which would have deepened Mike's character a great deal and at the same time given Will's character arc a much more satisfying conclusion. They strung a huge part of the fandom along knowingly only to nuke them. And Mike and El, their flag ship since season 1? Yeah, let's give them 0 development together the last season before we nuke them too. And not to talk about the amount of time they spent on the whole Jancy vs Stancy-thing before which didn't lead anywhere either.
Game of Thrones had their main hero ending up alone and miserable, right where he started. Everyone rooted for Jon Snow. Everyone thought at least he would end up doing something meaningful in the end, right? Nah, let's have him kill his love interest, the main heroine, and then be banished to the Wall where he stared, where he can live the rest of his life miserable and alone, living with the guilt of what he did to Dany. So satisfying. Vs Stranger Things who had one of their main heroes (and arguably main character if you go by the first two seasons) to end up seemingly alone, miserable and ridden by guilt in the end. Because Mike, much like Jon Snow, can also be seen as partly responsible for El's death because he built the bomb that ultimately killed her.
It's just... they did litterally the same things??? The flaws of GoT were well-known. Fans weren't quiet on why they hated the last season. And Stranger Things just... thought it was a great idea to basically make the exact same mistakes?? Make it make sense???
It's truly a mystery to me. They claimed to have studied shows like Game of Thrones for the mistakes they made that led to them ending in disappointment. But then, as you said, they go and make basically the exact same mistakes, almost to a comical degree, too.
It's easy to see how conformitygate gripped so many people (myself included) after the finale. Even ignoring all the weird hints that Henry wasn't really dead, it just felt so terrible, especially in light of them making a documentary for the production of the final season. I may not be on the bus anymore, exactly, but I can understand why it feels far too suspicious. After all, why call attention to the bad endings of shows and document your process if you're making the same mistakes?
At least I didn't get into Game of Thrones. It'd kill me if I had to go through this more than once.
happy 7/7 byler day!
