Out Now: Star Wars: Smuggler’s Guide Deluxe Edition

Now out from publisher Epic Ink is the Deluxe Edition of Star Wars: Smuggler's Guide, an all-new entry in the series of Star Wars books/collectibles that began with The Jedi Path in 2010 up through last year's The Rebel Files.  

Subtitled "Notes from the Underworld," Star Wars: Smuggler's Guide comes inside a case that resembles an actual artifact from the Star Wars universe. This one is a strongbox that might have been carried aboard a ship like the Millennium Falcon--and like the Falcon it has a secret compartment. 

Opening the case will reveal various items of interest: a fight poster, a couple fake piloting licenses owned by Han, a wanted poster for an interstellar pirate, a letter of marque authorizing a privateer to raid ships on behalf of the Hutts, an Imperial Customs inspection form, and a coat-check receipt from the Canto Bight casino. 

But there's a false bottom to the case, and beneath it is the book itself. 

It's like a diary, but with dozens of authors spanning decades of Star Wars history. Out Now: Star Wars The Rebel Files Trade Edition

The Deluxe Edition came out last fall, but for those who don't want to buy a whole tricked-out case, the book-only version of Star Wars: The Rebel Files is out now from Chronicle Books!  

As a standalone hardcover, this version of The Rebel Files is available at a much lower price point. Naturally it doesn't come with all the bells & whistles of the Deluxe Edition, but all of the key storyline beats are still there. Out Now: DC Comics Variant Covers: The Complete Visual History

Now available from Insight Editions, DC Comics Variant Covers: The Complete Visual History is an oversized art book that offers a deep dive into the history of variant comic book covers from the 1980s to today.  

That's the book's cover as illustrated by comics legend Neal Adams, and it wouldn't be a book about variant covers if there wasn't also a variant cover for the book itself. That one comes courtesy of Frank Cho as seen here:

Now available from Insight Editions is the official behind-the-scenes art book for Pacific Rim Uprising!  

The Art and Making of Pacific Rim Uprising is the official tie-in book for the 2018 follow-up to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 monster epic. This hardcover coffee-table book showcases some of the amazing art pieces created for the sequel, from costumes to props to visual effects.

Out Now: Star Wars: The Rebel Files Deluxe Edition

Just released from publisher Epic Ink is the Deluxe Edition of Star Wars: The Rebel Files, the latest in the in-universe book/collectible case" series that began with The Jedi Path back in 2010. 

Like the other Deluxe Edition packages in the series, The Rebel Files comes inside a special case designed to look like an artifact from the Star Wars universe. In this case it's a secure Rebel strongbox containing a mini-projector that displays the Death Star schematics at the touch of a button. Several removable items are included in a folder, including a Yavin 4 evacuation checklist, Jyn Erso's prison record, a Rebel intake form for Lando Calrissian, a brochure from Kuat Drive Yards, and a letter that explains the fate of this artifact after the Battle of Endor.  

The book itself is a narrative history of the Rebel Alliance told in scrapbook form.  

This "found document" approach offers a lot of variety in terms of info & general design, and the book introduces a couple new Star Wars characters while fleshing out the Rebel drama that went on behind the scenes.

My Presentation at Iowa City Book Festival 2017

This  weekend I'll be a guest at the Iowa City Book Festival, presenting on Saturday Oct. 14 to talk about writing for Star Wars, superheroes, and other fictional universes. 

My presentation is happening at Iowa City's FilmScene theater from 11:30am-12:30pm. Out Now: The Dark Tower: The Art of the Film

Released in July 2017 from Melcher Media--in conjunction with the movie directed by Nikolaj Arcel and starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey--The Dark Tower: The Art of the Film is a highly detailed, behind-the-scenes exploration of how the Stephen King saga became adapted for the big screen.   

It's a well-designed and gorgeous-looking 200-page coffee table book packed with tons of production photos and early concept art, including many moments that didn't make it into the final cut of the film.  I did an interview about writing the book and my thoughts on the whole Dark Tower saga on the Books and Nachos podcast.  Here's the official publisher's description:  This deluxe, illustrated official companion to the Dark Tower movie—based on Stephen King’s bestselling eight-volume series—explores the art and creation of this extraordinary film, starring Idris Elba as The Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey as his nemesis, The Man in Black. Out Now: Star Wars: On the Front Lines

Released in July 2017 from Titan Books is Star Wars: On the Front Lines, an official Star Wars reference book that takes a history-book approach to exploring the major battles seen throughout the saga.  

It's a great-looking hardcover reference that is essentially an art book, featuring amazing pieces by artists Adrian Rodriguez, Thomas Wievegg, Aaron Rile, and Fares Maese and a cover by Brian Rood. 

There's a historical sweep to the book's content, beginning with the Battle of Naboo in The Phantom Menace all the way through the Battle of Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens. Interspersed with the battle details are sidebars featuring first-person accounts from soldiers who survived the battles, telling their stories in their own words.

Out Now: Star Wars Ship Factory

Released in August 2016 from Studio Fun is Star Wars Ship Factory a make-a-model kit and I wrote the booklet that's included on the inside. 

It's similar to Star Wars Droid Factory from last fall, only instead of making R2-D2, C-3PO, and BB-8, this time you make Kylo Ren's shuttle, a First Order TIE fighter, and the Millennium Falcon (with rectangular radar dish!)  Here's a short vid I made after finishing all three models: 

The suggested age range is 6-14 years or grades 1-8. There's also a 24-page booklet that includes descriptions of many ships that aren't actually in the kit as a sort of mini-encyclopedia for interested kids.

My Schedule for New York Comic-Con 2016

Here's my schedule for New York Comic-Con 2016, happening this weekend from Thursday October 6 through Sunday October 9! 

I'll be promoting a new boxed set called Star Wars: Secrets of the Galaxy from Chronicle Books, as well as other books including Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Visual History. 

Star Wars: Secrets of the Galaxy is a brand-new repackaging of the in-universe "textbook" guidebooks that began with The Jedi Path, continued with Book of Sith, and completed the set with The Bounty Hunter Code and Imperial Handbook. It's a very nice looking set: 

All these books are written as if they could be books you plucked off of Yoda's shelf, or fished out of Boba Fett's foot locker. They provide practical advice and ancient wisdom and the pages are marked up with graffiti-style comments from Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Han Solo. If you missed them the first time around this is a great opportunity to get all four at once.

Like my earlier book Superman: The Man of Tomorrow, this book features some wonderful interior illustrations by Patrick Spaziante in telling Kara's story from Krypton to Earth. I was told to focus on Kara's New 52 comics origin for this, so expect to see that version here (roughly issues #1-7 of the rebooted New 52 series). The reading level is pitched to kids age 8-12.

Get Pop Cultured With Barnes and Noble: I'm Talking Captain America This Thursday 7/28

This Thursday, July 28, I'll be talking up Marvel's Captain America: The Ultimate Guide to the First Avenger at 7pm at the Barnes and Noble in Edina, Minnesota.

It's part of Barnes and Noble's annual "Get Pop Cultured" series of author events and book promotions. Specifically, I'll be at the Barnes and Noble at the Edina Galleria on Thursday July 28 at 7pm to talk about Marvel Comics, Captain America, and the Avengers, and also to sign copies of Marvel's Captain America: The Ultimate Guide to the First Avenger which I wrote with Matt Forbeck and Alan Cowsill.
