I find the well-meaning "write for yourself, not for others" advice so fundamentally flawed in the context of comments and engagement with fics.
While in general it's valid for any hobby, especially in our age of content-creation grinding and constant seeking of validation, the advice feels like it deeply misunderstands and dismisses natural human motivations.
Now that I'm older and have a lot of other priorities I just don't have the time or inspiration to write as much. So in my case, it is purely the engagement (the comments people leave) that motivates me to dedicate the time and mental effort to finish a fic. It has nothing to do with whether I like writing or am writing for myself - I can scribble a quick sentence, talk about a plot idea with a friend, but taking the time out to actually refine that and share it is done purely for the interaction and feeling of belonging to a community and getting feedback.
So yes, doing something purely for the sake of getting attention from others is a dangerous slope towards unhappiness and lack of satisfaction, especially for younger people who hinge a lot on that validation, but there is a lot of nuance before we even get to that point and it's counterproductive to dismiss the encouragement and joy that people get out of those interactions.
Not all writers are the idealized, passionate type whose soul cries out if they can't put their ideas on a page. They might have the inner motivation to write no matter who reads it. The rest of us might need a little external motivation.
For me at least, the engagement is the crucial difference between something sitting in my head or drafts and it getting worked on and published.

HALLOWEENNNNNNNNN uh this is from last year but I don't remember if I posted it so uuuh yeaaaah edgy klonoa for the seasonnnn
anyway the thing about fanfic is that it's not essentially bad or good; it's essentially amateur. some people are absolutely out there writing award-worthy prose (some fic writers ARE award-winning writers IRL!), but that's not the point. the point is that we're all telling campfire stories. it's a community, and it's a way to spend some more time in the worlds and stories that we love.
“this trope is bad and wrong” “this trope should not be glorified or romanticized” “this ship is toxic and problematic” “you shouldn’t write a fanfiction about this” “you’re a terrible person for liking fucked up things in fiction” — good thing I write for my own enjoyment, not yours
Sometimes I think about stopping writing my fics in French. Kudos are rare and comments are non-existent.
I adore Lord ghadius Shoes in that old beta design of his...
Like, where ya going with them cracows on ?? ಠಿ_ಠ
its so scary to put yourself out there but a SINGLE message saying "hi i loved what you made it touched me in some way" makes it all worth it 10000%
daily reminder that if you like something someone made tell! them! tell them tell them tell them TELL THEM
I sometimes wonder if Joka ever tried to cheer up Ghadius with the colourful attacks ..
I think that idea is so sweet :o)

a feel like the new generation of fanfic readers NEED to understand that clicking on a fic (interaction) does nothing. ao3 has no algorithm. your private discord discussions of fic do not reach the authors. if you do not actively engage with writers they will stop posting. this isn’t social media this is community.
