लोकतंत्र को हांकती लाठियां बापू अचानक थाने आये. उनको पकड़कर नहीं लाया गया था, वे खुद आये थे. जब थाने में आ गये तो थानेदार उनको देखकर अचंभित हुआ. उसने बापू को ऊपर से नीचे तक गौर से देखा. बाबू के माथे पर पसीने की बूंदें ढलक रहीं थीं. दरोगा ने बापू से बैठ जाने का आग्रह किया. उनके लिये तुरंत पानी लाने का आदेश दिया. (जानता हूं आप इस बात पर विश्वास नहीं कर रहे होंगे, पर दरोगा ने ऐसा किया.) थानेदार: 'कैसे आना हुआ बापू!' दरोगा ने बेहद नर्म लहजे में पूछा. (जी… यह सच है) 'मेरी लाठी नहीं मिल रही है!' बापू बोले.
