So he was.
The confirmation, the realization, that they were more alike than Takumi had ever thought they’d be was…disconcerting, and strange, and…and oddly comforting.
“I won’t,” the Hoshidan prince murmured, fingers pulling the cape a little tighter around himself. It was an unexpected gesture, but no less kind, and Takumi felt something loosen in his chest, the tightly wound twists and knots of fear and shame not quite as painful as they had been with the knowledge that, perhaps, there was someone in this place not out to harm him.
( An odd thought, perhaps, considering Leo’s earlier threats that felt almost a lifetime ago, but looking at the prince now, seeing the soft expression on his face, the vulnerability in his eyes, it was difficult not to believe in him. )
“…Thank you.”
For telling him. For helping him. For saving him.
Amber eyes darted back up, swiftly, nervously, at the sound of footsteps hurriedly returning to the cell, a sickening weight settling in his stomach. The large blanket in the other man’s hands did little to disperse the tendrils of terror slithering around his heart and he watched, body frozen, eyes locked on the guard as he stepped further into the cell, hesitated, then dropped the bundle of fabric gently on the floor a few feet away.
Takumi still didn’t move. Not even when the guard stepped back out into the hall and out of sight. Only then did he glance down at the blanket. It looked warm, big, soft and clean and so inviting - but it also reminded Takumi of how filthy he himself was. His hair, his face, his back and legs and body–
“I…I suppose it might be pushing it to ask for a b-bath…” The prince whispered, more of a statement to himself than an actual question. The kindness he had already been shown was more than he ever could have expected, after all.
Leo studied Takumi's movements when the guard came in. He was like a skittish creature of prey, the way his eyes darted and those pupils constricted. In a way, it made him uneasy, seeing him like this and knowing the cause.
At Takumi's question, Leo paused to think about it.
“With anybody else, you’d be pushing it...”
He'd want a bath too, if he was put in a similar situation.
"...no. Excuse me, I meant...not here. I don’t trust the bathing area here."
Those men could still be there.
As he spoke, he picked up the blanket and draped it over Takumi, unsure if he actually wanted it over him or not, and unsure if any of these layers was helping at all. Regardless, he wasn't going to have him walk out when his outfit was torn to shreds.
"If you really want it now, you can get it, but I would advise against it. And...”
Leo’s face turned a little red.
“I’ll...have to watch you. If you decide to bathe in the bathing area here. Just to make sure none of my father’s men enter or try to sneak in while you’re there. If you want, I can also have a bucket of water brought here instead, if you really need it. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing at all. When we get to the castle...I'll see if I can arrange something. If I'm successful, you'll get a bath after my report. If I'm not..."
Leo's voice trailed off, feeling a pit in his stomach. His expression grew dark for a moment at the thoughts of what would happen if he wasn't able to convince his father to let him keep Takumi.
"...don't worry. I'll be successful. I'll make sure of it."
@darkartsdelver (continued from an ask)
Circe laughed and shook her head. “Nope! A new friend would have been nice, but that’s not why I’m excited!” She gave her father a kiss on the cheek. “I’m excited because mommy is gonna teach me how to sword fight! I’m so excited, daddy!” She giggled and gave Leo a big hug. “Maybe when she’s done you can teach me how to use magic!”
“Oh?”
That soon, huh?
“That’s great! And yes, definitely. I can teach you a little bit.” She was growing up so fast. It felt like just yesterday, he was teaching her how to walk. “Be careful, okay? Tell your mother if she’s being too hard on you or moving too fast for you, my little princess.” Though knowing Lucina, she probably would have figured out a good pace for Circe prior to the training.
"Daddy! Guess what?" Circe was bouncing on her heels in excitement while looking up at her dad.
There were very few things that brought a smile to Leo’s face. One of those (and that was always consistent) was whenever he laid eyes on his daughter - especially if she was as full of elation as she was right now. Seeing her always manages to lift up his mood. “Oh?” he chuckled, “What is it, my little princess? Did you make a new friend today?”
Worry, biggest feeling Takumi has currently. Worry for his friend. Worry that he won’t make it. Worry that he’d die. If only this hadn’t happened, the Hoshidan found himself thinking, if only I knew as much about healing as my sister.
At first, Takumi was wary of the people coming to help, unsure if they had true intentions of making sure Leo would survive. But he cast that away quickly when he saw even more blood. His doubtful nature might end his friend’s life. “You’ll be okay, Leo… there’s people helping.” he explains as he sets the Nohrian down so the others could help.
Leo is carefully placed on a stretcher made of bamboo. Through blurred vision, Leo could make out several people. Were they already in town? That meant he could close his eyes now. He was safe, right?
But he was still afraid.
A groan of pain escapes Leo’s lips and he starts to bleed more, but the villagers quickly attend to his wound before lifting up the stretcher to take him into the castle town - to bring him to a proper doctor.
The civilians seemed to recognize the two. Takumi, definitely. One of them approaches the prince.
“Prince Takumi,” they say, “Where would you like us to take him?”
It seemed that he didn’t notice her change of expression and inwardly, she relaxed. With a nod, she took the pot of tea and slowly poured some till the cup was full. It was a good thing the tea stayed warm, knowing when she touched the teapot.
“Here you go, my lord.”
She was about to move on when she heard his question about her sibling. Something about it made her clench her fists. It could have been that it was about her sister, but she took a moment to answer.
“I’m not quite sure. If she did, she must not have thought twice about it.” It was the only thing she said so far that wasn’t a lie. "One would think that the older sibling would fare better, but in this case, not at all.” Pushing her hair out of her face, it made her curious on why he wanted to know about her.
As Leo listened intently to Flora’s words, his curiosity for her only grew. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but he felt like there was more to her story - or, at least, more emotions to be had - and she wasn’t sharing. Granted, it was none of Leo’s business, but Leo was curious.
“Yes...Yes indeed.”
Before Leo went on with more questions, he stopped himself.
“...do these questions make you uncomfortable? I can stop if you want.”
Leo eyed her.
“I don’t know that much about you nor your sister.” Flora, mostly. “You and Felicia just kind of...showed up one day. And father didn’t speak much.”
Leo stuttering was definitely something new. Though, he figured he could understand why the other was fumbling over his words. His mind was still a little sleep addled, but he knew just what’d happened. It was surprising, to say the least, to wake up to someone kissing him.
His first kiss.
“You did?” He asked, shifting a little under his blankets to prop himself up on his elbows. “I suppose I was…doing well enough for you to kiss me?”
Kamui knew he should be more ashamed of himself and how he’d actually liked waking up to something like that. It’d been warm and comforting. It’d also been quite surprising as well to find that it was Leo that’d been kissing him.
For a moment, Leo thought that he had successfully tricked his brother. But that last part completely and utterly filled him with dread.
“I...”
He didn’t know what to say. For the first time in forever, he was speechless. He had no excuse, really. Kamui probably hated him. Thought he was weird. Leo lost all chances with Kamui with this move, and for what? Temporary gratification? His brother would probably tell someone in the morning about this incident. And Leo would be avoided and become the laughing stock of the army.
“I...”
Leo turned around, doing the only thing he thought he could do in this situation that did the least damage.
“...I-I’m sorry. I’ll leave now. I’m...sorry for waking you up.”
Corrin sighed and shook her head. She could never return to that village. Who knew what would happen to her if she did. She took a deep breath before calling out, “Wait!”
Her hands balled into fists, and she stared at the ground, squeezing her eyes shut to calm herself down. This was not going the way she expected, and she was grateful for that, but…
“I can’t go back. Ever. If I return to that village, they will more than likely kill me. And for what? Rejecting some higher up? It’s stupid!” She took another breath and opened her eyes, looking up at him and not really caring what she saw.
“Let me stay here! Please! I can never return to that village. I’ll do anything you want! Just please don’t turn me away!”
Leo stopped mid-step, his back towards her as he listened to her speak.
Was that the reason she was offered to him? They were going to kill her just because she rejected someone? Those villagers were a lot stupider than he thought.
Off to the side, out of Leo’s sight, his servants eyed him; hopeful, expectant. There was a long pause of silence before Leo turned around. The face of a fearsome lion with a golden mane met with the girl’s gaze. Piercing, crimson irises narrowed into a glare. More than anything, he wanted her to leave.
“I don’t like intruders in my castle,” he growled, “Isn’t there some other place you can go to?”
Was there another place the girl could journey to that wasn’t her town? Leo wasn’t aware. Though, he supposed that either way, if it was too much of a distance, traveling for that long wouldn’t be wise. The weather was growing cold and it looked like there might be snow.
Still.
Blink.
Falchion looked at him calmly.
“I’m Falchion. A spirit in the sword. Wanna see it again?”
From where she came from, people knew who she was, revering her as a god almost, despite that not being the case. Since he obviously seemed confused, she tried to break it down. How long was I in slumber anyways?
“Hey, I’m not a thief.” The very thought offended her. “Put that down, please…”
Leo lowered his tome, but still kept his guard up, just in case she was trying something funny.
“You’re...Falchion? A spirit...?”
He had heard the tales, but he didn’t think it were true - that weapons themselves had spirits and sometimes manifested in human form. Was this one of those cases?
“I’ve...never encountered a spirit in a weapon before. Is this a common thing?”
“And that’s some claim. Falchion’s a fictional sword.”
“Oh great… I’ll just follow you then.”
A small smile appeared on Setsuna’s face as she followed the young Nohrian through the woods.
Though she didn’t notice before, the way this boy held himself seemed very… authoritative? No that wasn’t exactly the word. It was more, prideful. He seemed to carry himself quite highly, as if he had a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. It was almost, prince-like if she had to give a word to it.
It reminded her of a certain prince back at home. Setsuna began to wonder if the two would get along.
Setsuna continued to follow the man in front of her without a care, trusting in the blonde. As they continued to walk through the forest, Setsuna noticed a familiar river over to the west. If they followed it upstream it would certainly lead them back to the fortress. At least that was what Lady Hinoka said.
But seeing as the Nohrian didn’t stop, Setsuna decided to trust the boy’s judgment and continued walking away.
Time continued to pass and Setsuna started to question the path they were on. She wasn’t sure whether this way lead out of the forest at all. Maybe she should mention the river she saw earlier.
“…Um hi. I don’t know if you noticed, but there was a river back there we could have followed… Unless you know a different way back of course.”
Strange. He was sure that he was going the right direction. But when Setsuna pointed out the river, he internally groaned.
"How further back is the river?" Leo asked. He vaguely recalled the direction of the river, but wasn't one-hundred percent certain of where it was. Everything in the forest looked the same, and Leo wasn't the best tracker. Interested, yes, but in practice, he wasn't the best.
"And...why didn't you say anything earlier?"
It would have saved a lot of time, especially if Setsuna recalled the way out.
Leo tried not to sound angry or irritated. He told himself over and over that he was better than that. And if he didn't watch his words or actions and Setsuna told Hinoka about his rudeness, well...not only would Hinoka come to him, but he imagined that both of the royal families would as well.
With little to do aside from prepare her darling Nivrema for the flight ahead Camilla spent much of her time simply fawning over the wyvern, hands brushing along her scales and words adopting the soft pitch one would often use when talking to a young child. The princess spilled both praises to her mount and words of excitement over finally having some way to bond with her baby brother. It was so easy to embarass that one that she often found herself at a loss for what she should do.
“Of course I’m still here.” Elated at Leo’s return and the smile on his face -something she saw far too seldom these days- Camilla smiled down at her younger brother, patting a spot on Nivrema’s back as she encouraged him to hop on.
“She’s plenty strong enough to carry us both. Come along, we don’t want to be gone too long now!” A motherly smile and Camilla took the front seat and the reins. As much as she loved to spend her time with Leo, they still had a war to attend to. If Corrin, or her other siblings for that matter, should have need of her, Camilla wouldn’t want to disappoint them by not being present.
"Right..."
Leo got on Nivrema, sitting in the spot that Camilla offered to him. He hung on tight - this was the first time riding a riding in such a long time. The last time he rode one was several years ago, and it did not go very well. Leo preferred the comfort of his horse, but since they needed to be quick, going by wyvern was probably the ideal route.
"Thank you very much for this, Camilla. I..." Leo pursed his lips, pausing. He was unsure if he should say the next part.
But seeing as how he had just opened up to Camilla some time ago, he figured that saying this would be fine as well. Camilla had been so far accepting, and Leo, in a way, found comfort in that, despite feeling embarrassed at the same time. "...I'll be sure not to go overboard this time when I buy tomatoes."
Well… what was he supposed to do now? He had thought it was all over, but here he was… Um, somewhere. No matter how far he looked or how much he walked he did not seem to find anything or anyone so far. It was getting tiring. Was this a punishment of sorts for something he had done in life?
Suddenly a voice reached him, it sounded familiar but at the same time it did not. His eyes searched for the source but it seemed it was uncorporeal. ❝Hello? Hellooooooo??! Who’s there? Where are you?❞
He had found the tome during his visit in Izumo, and what better way to try it than at the discovery site itself? Though, he had to admit, if anybody were looking at what he was about to do, it would probably be in bad taste; Leo was trying to contact Izana, who had fallen during the Valla incident.
At first, Leo heard nothing. For five minutes, he didn't hear a single peep. But just when he was about to drop the spell altogether, he heard a rather familiar voice that came to his ears
"I...wha...!"
Was that who he thought it was?
"I...Izana?" he called out, "Izana, is that you?!"
Takumi was getting ready to respond before Leo even finished his question. He knew that the blond was going to ask about his other retainer’s well being. but he never got the chance. The coughing fit started and it sounded awful, as though the Nohrian prince was in massive amounts of pain.
Takumi did stop walking… and started running. He has to get the blond to a healer and FAST, regardless of who the healer is.
Leo was choking on his own blood, but tried his best to keep it down, or turn his head to spit it off to the side. He had already soiled Takumi's clothing too much, and he felt a pang of guilt for bleeding on it further, even if his body couldn't help it. Leo continued to struggle to breathe, and for a moment, he thought that this was going to be the end.
But up ahead, some villagers see the two and run off, calling for help.
Sure enough, several people returned, eager to assist them.
“It’s… a pleasure to meet you too,” he said quietly, feeling his cheeks heat up at having been rather unceremoniously pulled from his thoughts to meet him. He hadn’t even thought about what to say. Nevertheless, Riku extended his hand to clasp the other’s, and winced a little as the throb in his chest tightened.
Now? Was it the servant? It couldn’t be Leo, could it?
He forced his spine into a straighter line.
“Yes, of course–I know, sir,” he said, with a little quirk of a smile. “I’m very honored to have been chosen as one of your family’s attendants. It’s been a dream of mine. I… intend on fulfilling my duty to the letter.”
Which was what most people did? Ugh, at least try to sound impressive! You want him to feel safe or at least at ease around you.
“Thank you for your congratulations. I’ve already settled in so if you have need for anything, I’m at your beck and call, sir.”
These palpitations were very concerning, and only made Leo even more concerned by the second. But since he was in the presence of a servant and a new attendant, it would hurt his pride to show any sign of weakness. Instead, he buried his uncomfortable feelings behind a smirk.
Off to the side was the servant, still ever-vigilant. They were probably here to make sure that Riku's first day and introduction were going well. Leo paid them little attention.
"Ah, wonderful. Tell me, Riku, how well-versed are you in magic? Or at least magic history? Any knowledge at all?"
It was a long shot, but Leo was looking for someone else to speak about magic to. Too many of those around him weren't very familiar about the subject at all, so finding at least one person to confide in about magic would make him quite content. The dark mage wouldn't be surprised if Riku didn't know anything at all. He had a lot of errands for him to run, regardless, if the attendant was truly free right now.
For a moment, there was a flash of surprise on her face. No one has really asked about her family but then, she wasn’t expecting it at all. Though with her lord in front of her, she wasn’t sure on why but she didn’t feel the need to keep it short with him. It was then she had a moment to compose herself to her usual stoic face.
“…I’m not sure exactly on how to answer that.” That was a complete lie but could she really tell him? “My father favored my sister for her strength but he didn’t mind that I was competent on being a maid.” Lies, lies, lies. Her father didn’t care that she was a maid at all but since he just shipped them to where Kamui was, it didn’t seem to matter.
“Would you like more tea?” In an odd way, it was her way of changing the subject but she wouldn’t have been surprised if he asked more.
He didn't mind...?
Leo watched Flora's expression. Still ever-hard to read, but he sensed something...off. He couldn't quite put a finger on it.
"Yes, more tea would be nice."
The prince hadn't even noticed that his cup was empty until he looked down. But he was eager to keep pressing.
"Does Felicia know? About your father..." he asked. In a way, he could almost relate. He did notice that Flora didn't say "favor", but rather she said, "didn't mind". It must have been harder on Flora, though, since she was the oldest, if Leo recalled correctly. He wasn’t sure.
His chuckle had somewhat reassured her, even if it had the smallest hint of him being uncomfortable. But hearing him call her my princess made her stumble a bit, a flustered mess again with his little nickname.
“A-Am I really? T-This is all pretty new, s-so I’m not quite sure w-what to do. B-but you’re moving just fine, a-and I am enjoying myself with you, m-my prince.”
She wasn’t sure where that came from, but she felt herself relax a little with his movements. He was going slow enough for her to follow and he was being surprisingly patient with how she was stumbling around as if she never had that shrine maiden training.
And she wasn’t sure if it was because she’d forgotten all about her shrine maiden training or because she was too flustered from his voice so close to her, but she stepped on his feet again and squeezed her eyes shut, sucking in a deep breath.
“I-I’m so sorry! I… I just don’t think I’m too cut out for dancing,” she felt her hands loosen from his, wanting to pull away and pretend she was Cinderella with her imaginary midnight bell chime, but she wanted to keep dancing with him until midnight actually came, before she had to go back to Hoshido and he had to stay in Nohr.
Before he would stop calling her my princess and she would stop calling him my prince.
Leo was quite enjoying himself. Then again, not only was he dancing - which was fun in and of itself - but he was also teaching, which Leo enjoyed if the person was willing. So he didn't really pay much mind to when she stepped again, continuing on with the lesson. But when she spoke those words, and felt her fingers loosen against his, Leo stopped.
"No...wait. Please, it's fine, really. I think you're doing wonderful, my princess."
Leo's own fingers tightened a little against his partner's before he stopped himself, and loosened them. If she didn't want to dance at all, Leo shouldn't force her.
"Is...I...I'm sorry. Was I being too pushy? Is this not enjoyable for you...? We can stop, if you wish. I just wanted to dance with you, and make your first time dancing in Nohr...memorable."
Was that the right word to use? He wasn’t sure, but for now he had stopped dancing with her. Luckily they were still off to the side, in an area where the guests could keep dancing, and it wasn't awkward if they suddenly stopped.
"Heh...if it means anything, you're doing a lot better than I was, I lost count of how many times I stepped on my instructor's feet in the first minute of him teaching me..."
His voice had a light, friendly tone to it. The incident was, in a way, true. Leo had never danced before - much less dance a dance where someone other than him was leading - and his instructor had sore feet for that whole week.
Corrin had closed the door behind her soon after entering, and was about to leave that area to look around when she heard the voice. She wouldn’t scream when she first saw him. That’s what she told herself at least. And she wasn’t exactly wrong: She screamed when she first heard him.
When she heard his voice from the top of the stairs, Corrin screamed bloody murder. She hadn’t been paying attention to the staircase, but had instead been looking elsewhere. She looked to the top of the stairs after she’d stopped screaming and took a deep breath. She gave him the biggest smile she could, which wasn’t that big,
“I’m afraid I can’t exactly drop what I brought, sir…” Corrin pursed her lips and gave him a little curtsy. “A pleasure to meet you. My name is Corrin, and I am this months villages offering…” She stood up straight and took another deep breath. “I am yours, sir, in any way you see fit.”
Leo's ears twitched, having grown sensitive due to his form. He covered them, but stayed in the shadows so that the girl wouldn't see, groaning internally. Once she stopped screaming, he sighed, somewhat irritated. Her mentioning the village sending her as an offering only made that irritation grow.
Well...he was a beast, but...
"...hmph..."
...it didn't mean that he ate humans. He used to be human, and he wasn't interested in the taste of them. He supposed that it was only natural that seeing someone of his form would make anyone assume, but still.
"I don't eat humans. Go back to the village and tell them that this is my first warning...or whatever."
He didn't mean to add the last bit. It just kind of slipped out. Regardless, Leo turned around, prepared to leave, expecting the girl to leave as well.
