The History of Love: Part 2 - Professor Andy Barber x Student Reader

Part 1
“Oh fuck,” you whisper to Kay. You’re really regretting not asking Andy what he did for work last night because now the guy who you’re supposed to be going on a date with is apparently your professor.
“Oh, girly you are screwed,” Kay whispers back.
Andy takes a moment to compose himself and then continues with his introduction. You’re barely listening as he walks the class through the syllabus, instead you're trying to figure out what the hell you are going to do now.
Before you know it, the hour is over, and your classmates are packing up.
“Are you going to talk to him?” Kay asks as she slings her bag over her shoulder.
“I guess I have to, don’t I?” you reply with a sigh. You’re not even sure what you’re going to say.
Kay waits with you as the rest of your classmates file out. Andy is packing his messenger bag up as the last student leaves. Kay gives you a look before making her own exit out the door.
You approach Andy and clear your throat to get his attention. Andy looks up before scanning the empty room for any stragglers.
“Hi,” he greets you after he’s sure the room is clear.
“Hi,” you respond with a shy smile. Andy smiles back at you and then sighs.
“Well, this was not where I thought I’d see you next,” he admits. You let out a nervous chuckle.
“Yeah, I’ve been kicking myself all class for not asking you about your job last night,” you confess. Andy nods and leans against the desk, crossing his arms over his chest.
“I know,” Andy sighs. “I thought you were possibly a student, but I never expected to find you in my 9 am lecture this morning.”
“Do you want me to drop the class?” you ask quietly, a little bit afraid of his answer. “I’m sure I can find another history class still. Professor Romanoff usually has room in her European history classes….”
Andy places a hand on your arm, effectively stopping you mid ramble.
“Don’t do that. We’re both adults we can be professional about this,” Andy pleads. “Well, unless you don’t feel comfortable, then of course I’ll sign the schedule change form.”
“I’d like to stay,” you tell him, trying not to blush. “You’re right, we can both be adults about this.”
“Good,” Andy replies with a huge smile on his face.
Students for the next class start filing into the lecture hall, bursting your little bubble. Andy nods his head toward the door and you follow him out into the hallway. The History department building is bustling with students on their way to classes as the two of you move toward the front door. No one takes a second glance toward a professor and student talking.
“When’s your next class?” Andy inquires as you cross the large lobby. You spot some familiar faces of classmates across the hall, but none of them seem to notice you.
“Not for another hour,” you answer, adjusting the strap of your backpack on your shoulder as you go to push open the door. Andy beats you to it though, holding it open for you.
“Can I buy you a cup of coffee?” Andy asks as you both exit the building. The sun is beaming outside and there’s already a crisp fall breeze in the air. You know you should probably say no, but between the colder than normal temps and the fact you’ve got maybe a slight hangover still, you could use a pick me up.
“I’d like that,” you admit, tucking a stray piece of hair behind your ear. Andy smiles again and leads you over to a coffee cart off a side path next to the building. The two of you order and Andy insists on paying.
“Thank you,” you tell Andy as the two of you sit down on a nearby park bench.
“I remember living on coffee when I was your age,” Andy responds. “Would never have made it through law school without it.”
“Why did you decide to teach history instead of pre-law?” you ask him. You knew a little about Andy’s past, or at least what was covered in the newspapers during the trial for Jacob. Everyone in Boston knew; it was quite the scandal at the time. Andy hadn’t opened up much about it yet, but you kind of figured that wasn’t the type of conversation best had in a bar.
“I always liked history,” Andy confesses. “Plus growing up in Boston, you are kind of surrounded by it. Just seemed like the right thing to do,” he shrugs, before picking up his coffee and taking a sip. You get the hint and decide not to push it farther.
“Why did you pick history as your major?” Andy asks, throwing your own question back at you.
“Honestly, it’s kind of silly. I had an American Girl doll growing up, Felicity, the one from the colonial era,” you tell him, playing with the sleeve on your coffee cup. “Each doll came with her own set of books, stories about their lives set in their historical era. I loved those books and I fell in love with studying history.” You’d never told anyone that before, but for some reason, you felt comfortable telling Andy.
You looked up to see Andy staring at you in awe.
“What?” you ask, worried you’ve spilled coffee on yourself as Andy keeps looking at you.
“You’re adorable,” Andy professes, making you blush. “And that’s not a silly reason at all,” he tells you, reaching out to give your hand a small squeeze causing you to blush more.
You and Andy continue to discuss your shared love for history for the next hour. You find it so easy to talk to him, much like the night before. It doesn’t seem to bother either one of you that he’s your professor and you’re his student.
Too soon, it is time for you to head to your next class.
“Thank you again for the coffee,” you tell Andy, standing up from the bench.
“Of course,” Andy replies. “And you’re not going to drop my class, right?” he asks one more time.
“Nope, you’re stuck with me,” you promise him.
“Good,” Andy states. The two of you stand for another moment, staring at each other, neither of you wanting to leave.
“I gotta go,” you tell him, though you seem to be having a hard time making your feet move.
"You could text me later if you need help on the homework," Andy says, nonchalantly. “And maybe even if you don’t need help, you could still text me.”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea, professor?” you gently remind him. “I don’t want to get in trouble.”
“No, you’re right,” Andy sighs. “I’ll see you in class on Wednesday.”
“Yes, you will,” you reassure him. “See you then, Professor.”
Andy nods with a sad smile. You smile back at him and head off to your next class. You feel bad about letting Andy down, but you know it's for the better. As you walk away you don’t notice Andy staring after you before you disappear out of his sight.
When you get back to your dorm that afternoon, Kay practically jumps you dying to know what happened.
“We had coffee and we talked, that’s it,” you tell her, not ready to share any more than that. Like the fact if he wasn’t your professor, Andy would be the type of guy you could see yourself falling for.
“God, it’s so forbidden,” Kay sighs, flopping down on the couch in your small apartment.
“Yep,” you agree. “Which is why we are going to remain strictly professional about it,” you inform her.
“Did he pay for your coffee or did you?” Kay asks with a sly smile.
“He paid for it,” you confess. Kay squeals next to you.
“I bet you twenty dollars that before midterms he kisses you,” Kay proposes. You roll your eyes at her, before pulling your homework out of your backpack and sitting down at the kitchen table.
Even though you compose a text to Andy several times as you are working on his assignment, you never actually hit send. The two of you had agreed to keep it professional and that means no texting, no matter how much you want to.
Soon enough, Wednesday is here. You and Andy behave like "professor" and "student" all class period, which finally makes Kay shut up about your forbidden love.
Friday’s class is much of the same. Andy assigns the class their first reading reflection and sends you all on your way into the weekend.
Kay heads out to a party with some other friends that evening, leaving you home alone Friday night. You’re fine with that, never really having been the partying type.
As you're sitting on the couch trying to decide what movie to watch, your phone buzzes in your pocket.
You let out a small squeak when you see Andy’s name flash on your screen, quickly answering the call.
“Hey,” Andy greets you once the line connects.
“Hi,” you reply back.
“What are you up to this evening,” he asks.
“Just having a quiet night in. My roommate is out so I can watch whatever I want on the tv,” you tell him.
“No parties?”
“No, not really my thing,” you admit. “What about you? What are you up to tonight?” you ask, mindless playing with the pillow on the couch.
“Sitting in my house all alone and daydreaming about a certain someone,” he tells you wistfully.
“Me?” you ask, pretending like you already don’t know the answer.
“Yeah, I know we said we were going to be adults about this, but I can’t stop thinking about you,” he confesses. You have a hard time not squealing at this.
“Me either,” you tell him. “But we agreed to be responsible about this. I don’t want you to get into trouble.”
“Why are you the smart one?” Andy teases.
“I know, you’re the professor after all,” you tease back. You can hear Andy chuckle on the other end of the line.
The two of you end up talking for hours and you’re reminded once again how easy things are with Andy. Except for that big glaring red stop sign of he’s your freaking professor.
Finally, around 1am, you’re yawning up a storm and struggling to keep your eyes awake, so you tell Andy you better go.
“Goodnight y/n,” he says softly. “Sweet dreams.”
“Goodnight Andy,” you reply.
Just before you drift off to sleep you admit to yourself that you’re starting to fall for Andy.

I would walk to the library, and spend all day, from 10 am to 9 pm reading there!! I got special awards for how many books I read, I wrote little blurbs on why i loved the books (probably why I love to BETA and do ARCs)

As a 50 year old woman, the library offers me so much. Digital art pads to borrow, 3D printing, book clubs that are face to face (yeah, the introvert likes face to face because a moderator will stomp on anyone getting snarky)
New books in LARGE PRINT! I’m visually challenged and as much as I love my kindle, The feel of a real book in my hands will always be a beloved feeling!
Our library also has quarterly books sales of almost free books!! For 5$USD we get in a day early and can buy as many as we want. Anyone else has to wait and there is a limit for the first 2 days.
Also many, many libraries have inter library loan(it may be called something different). This means if they don’t have the item you want, they can get it for you. This may include photocopy/pdf of articles. This can also include along with books and DVDs, microfilm/fiche which is also a huge resource. Check around for libraries that are listed as depositories if you want to look at government documents.
Remember that many colleges and universities have open stacks for the public. You will likely have to pay a membership fee but you will get to stuff.
The library was one of my favorite places to go as a kid and I still live to go and just. Sit and read. Or do homework. The university I’m at has a massive 8-story one I love to just wonder around in~ Great places
