What would it have been like if the Sonic franchise continued down the path the Pontaff era set for it?

That path would remain largely decided by SoJ or Sonic Team regardless of who's in charge of the English script and/or dub. In the games, the English writers are rarely the ones who come up with the actual stories and what the characters do in them, something that a lot of fans either ignore or don't realise when they're pinning all the blame on one single target. There are exceptions, but that's what they are.

As far as general characterization goes though, I think we might have seen more improvements still beyond Eggman's already long-perfected role had they been allowed to carry on post-Forces. Sonic's portrayal was really good in Forces, and despite fandom dismissing it on the grounds of them not dragging out Maria's corpse, so was Shadow's. There was room for improvement for other characters, but it's possible they could have received it in time at that rate, or at least Tails and Amy in Frontiers might have not recycled their SA1 development and passed it off as something new.

So I thought I let anyone know regarding the next few chapters of EoDV. At the risk of doing something predictable yet /very/ controversial...

They'll be more focused on Ms. OC herself post-Hebioto and her start as Shadespark. Since the last few were obviously from Yusaku's POV during a dream, now it'll be her turn.

But hear me out on what will come along with this.

-Expect some (more) Kusanagi being the Big Bro of the cast

Headcanon: Sonic sometimes secretly goes to a therapist to talk about his problems. He doesn't want to talk but he knows that if he doesn't do anything about it he won't be able to fully enjoy his life. His friends didn't know, not because he felt embarrassed about attending a therapy session, but because he didn't want to put his burden on his friends.

I'm not sure how many more trauma-adjacent asks you plan on sending regarding Sonic's character, but I think I've made my opinion clear by now that Sonic, or at least Game Sonic, is simply not like that. He's not a sad clown: when he said "what you see is what you get" to Shadow, that wasn't a lie, and honestly, even if there was genuinely something on his mind that he was, for whatever reason, not likely to say openly, he would probably just discuss it with Tails or one of his other friends as per standard, because he trusts them.

Not to accuse, but the intent to make Sonic more emotionally traumatized kind of veers into the usual fandom problem with Sonic and Eggman other characters in the series. Namely, going extreme and making them borderline unrecognizable in an effort to seemingly make them more complex, instead of playing around with the traits provided because the characters as we know them are already more interesting and diverse than a lot of people give them credit for. Showing a different angle is one thing, and fine in theory, but that's not the same as making them someone else entirely.
