when you're feeling full hater mode about a piece of media but you know one of your beloved mutuals enjoys it

I think another reason for my jaded attitude towards Tumblr's extreme obsession with character flaws at the expense of everything else is because that mentality is how a lot of fans approach Tails.
He's always infantilized, taken care of by another character, cowering behind Sonic or Shadow at every threat, and so on, because "He's a kid!" "He has fears!" "He's not the strongest!" Alright, but can he do something cool and impactful on occasion? Can he have a means to justify why he's on equal footing with Sonic and the rest instead of being a mere sidekick to them?
I'm not asking for Titan Tails to flex his uncanny valley muscles and solo all of the opposition, but his appearances in previous titles have already demonstrated there's a lot more to him than fans are willing to give him. You can't appreciate different strengths for different characters if they keep getting shortchanged with little-to-no compensation, especially when - just like with Flynn lampshading Eggman getting upstaged by other villains in IDW - doing it too often encourages hack writers to further egg it on.
I really do believe that the Sonic cast as a whole have deeper qualities as they are than a lot of people give them credit for. Shadow tends to be looked at as a step above the rest due to his backstory and arc, but I feel that sells Sonic, Eggman, Amy, and everyone else short. They tend to be a lot more than the sum of their parts.
If they truly were so embarrassingly simple, that you could write them blindfolded, why do a significant number of writers and fan-writers alike fail to do them justice?
And with each failing leads to more misconceptions about them, thus muddying the once clear-water characterizations.
What do you think about the story of Shadow comforting Sonic after he loses his loved ones, usually Tails?
Don't take this the wrong way anon, but is there any reason in particular for why you keep sending asks revolving around Sonic being in emotional pain? I've already expressed my thoughts on how to handle that as a setup, I don't know what else to add that wouldn't be redundant.
As for Shadow comforting him... eh. Maybe it's unfair, but the idea of that gives me flashbacks to old 2000s Sonadow fics that would kill off Tails/Amy/literally everyone else to justify them bonding together. So I kind of don't feel an immediate need to see it with that lingering aftertaste in mind lol.

Yami Yugi scolding people for not loving their pets god he’s so endearing
Me, Always: gee it sure would be nice if I got nice-to-engaging comments on each chapter of EoDV on A03 to know I wrote something good For a Change.
Me 30 Minutes Later Then Never: maybe the fact that there's barely any comments indicates it speaks for itself and I mustn't seek vocal validation whatsoever

I dunno, stop apologizing for your art. This includes not posting enough, too much, changing style, inconsistent style, repetition, subject. Its your art its your expression. Have fun.
What do you think about Sonic having PTSD or experiencing emotional trauma in the mainline canon series or some fan work?
I don't think it's necessary for a character like Sonic. He often gets portrayed by fans as secretly being depressed and miserable behind his happy mask due to all he has experienced, but that just isn't who Sonic is. You use him to help other characters with complicated feelings lol.
Sonic can have emotional reactions to scenes that warrant it, but they need to work with his character instead of against it. That's also why fandom's obsession with Sonic crying is pointless, as he's not the type to bust out the waterworks when he's under emotional distress. Not publicly, anyway.
Plus heaven forbid not everyone is going to cry to indicate they're super sad. That there are various ways to (facially) express grief or pain without needing tear works.
Kinda weird to suggest that a(ny) character be made into a wangsting woobie in order to be engaging or "developed" when they're depressed. Not to judge ofc, but maybe it has more to do with a fan wanting a character to act more like themselves. #Relatable, and all that.
Saying I love you without saying “I love you”
“Being around you makes every day just a little lighter.”
[fondly] “You're such an idiot.”
“Got you, always.”
“I can imagine growing old with you.”
“I could sit here and listen to you forever.”
“Let me take care of you.”
“Nothing makes me happier than being with you.”
“Of course I trust you.”
“Seeing you happy makes me happy.”
“Something about you makes me feel safe.”
“Stay for a bit?”
“Stop making me smile, dork.”
“Why didn't you tell me you were cold? Come here.”
“You mean everything to me.”
“You were in my dreams tonight.”
“You're my favorite person, just… ever.”
some people are really looking so hard for some morally correct excuses to harass other people and be bullies, and then they wonder why fandom becomes toxic and no one wants to post their fics or art anymore. it's just pathetic.
fanfic writers and fan artists do not owe anybody anything
