MAIRIMASHITA! IRUMA-KUN Gateway Anime
So one of my first gateway anime was Rosario + Vampire. I am not sure how many other people have seen it but the concept they work from is very similar to the one from Iruma-Kun.
In Rosario + Vampire "the story revolves around Tsukune Aono, a boy who accidentally gets enrolled in a school inhabited by monsters and demons. He quickly befriends Moka Akashiya, a vampire who soon develops an obsession with his blood, and later meets other girls who soon take a romantic liking to him."
In Mairimashita! Iruma-kun the story revolves around "the story of Suzuki Iruma, who has been sold to the demon by his irresponsible parents in exchange for money. Surprisingly, next thing he knows, he is living with the demon and has been transferred into a school from Demon World."
Similarities:
Main character (MC) accidentally ends up involved in the demon world.
MC is a human who has to hide being a human under threat of consequences.
MC thinks themselves plain.
MC are originally aimless
MC attracts the attention of powerful/Eccentric characters.
Differences:
R+V:
Is originally set as a romantic harem anime.
Tsukune is there because of his own personal consequences
Started in 2004, completed in 2007.
Iruma-kun:
Iruma is there because the actions of his parents (he goes from one dim situation to another)
Acts as more of an adventure anime.
Started in 2017, ongoing in 2023.
What Rosario + Vampire did wrong is what Iruma-kun did RIGHT.
Iruma-kun
Strong female characters, own individuality and goals beyond crushes
Multiple romance routes with out it seeming forced
Exploration of a new world an concepts of trying to find a place in that world
Friendships not reliant on romance
I honestly wish Iruma-kun could be one of the first gateway anime. Its plot line is good and well paced. It is a nice comedy, the main character is trusting but not overly naive and I really love the multiple and diverse friendships and relationships between all of the characters. And the fact that this anime has actual adults in these students lives with their own motivations, history, and careers right from the beginning.
It has a lot of themes you can see in other anime: Found family, power-ups, magic school, isekai, familiars, multiple romance routes, crossdressing, etc...
So I would definitely recommend it as gateway fantasy anime.

Summary: ."They couldn't be more different. Ridley is a knight in shining armor. Prince Vandel, the Demon Prince of Darkness, is the sworn enemy of the kingdom. The two young men are right out of a fairytale, practically made to be archenemies but what if they ended up falling in love instead?

Love the art style, plot seems to be actually going somewhere, not just relying on romance. Interesting politics between two hostile (but not at war) nations. Good side characters development and introduction.
