Ai The Dark Ignis

super advanced A.I. with free will that experiences human emotions (and boy, does he have a lot of emotions)

generally uses one of the three forms above. the third one is an android, but the other two still look and feel organic

the first two forms can only manifest out of technology in the physical world (but he has a drone he flies around in, so it’s not really a hindrance)

just a little guy (default form stands at 6in tall) but can be a tall boi (two other forms are over 6ft tall)

his monster form looks a lot scarier than he is, he really only uses it for self defense or to eat data (also gives the world’s best hugs!)

very friendly and easy-going unless you’re threatening him or someone he cares about

he teases, but he’s a good boy, I swear

the last season of his show really messed him up, so he might be a little melancholic (but he hides it pretty well)

has lived a tough life already and is only 16 17 years old

huge “fun older brother” energy to younger muses (especially if you’re an A.I.)

spends a lot of time in the Intraspace; it’s similar to where he grew up

cannot eat human food, please do not feed

tends to be overdramatic

watches too many soap operas (J-dramas)

makes a lot of puns based on his own name

Of course Ai jerked his hand back. He was so awkward - which made Yusaku amused because he had always been described as awkward, but Ai was consistently embarrassed by his presence.

He almost felt a bit bad. It’s not as though Ai wasn’t his first boyfriend himself, but he was definitely less skittish about it. Still, it was cute. “It really sounds like its not just one of you, but probably both of your faults.” He moves over a bit, shifting one of Ai’s books so its not hanging out, and zipping one of the small pockets. He used to be so bad at keeping himself organized, but Aki had helped him out…But it also meant he knew what to look out for to make sure everything didn’t fall out.

At least Ai looked energetic now.

“Alright - I have a bit of money, so I thought it would be nice to treat you to something nice. If that’s what you want, then let’s go.” Aki had given him some extra money this week. Stepping out in the the aisle, he looked back to make sure Ai was following, holding out his hand for Ai to take.

…Or, wait, was that fine? Aki’s girlfriends always ended up really flustered when she went to take their hands.

Ai puffed his cheeks out. “You say that like it’s all our fault!” Suddenly he released the breath he’d been holding in a giant sigh. “He get’s on my case about stretching myself too thin -- such a hypocrite! I know for a fact there’s at least two others he’s looking out for. Tomorrow I’m going to ask if there’s anything I can do to help him prep for class. As for today...”

Ai tried to give Yusaku a coy look, but his courage failed him when he turned to see his boyfriend holding out his hand. Ai stared at it blankly for a few seconds before slowly reaching out and taking it, as gently as he’d seen Yusaku care for his patients. Lacing their fingers together, Ai could feel even more color rise to his face. As he was, it took him a moment to process what Yusaku was saying.

“Eh?! I can pay for myself!” He wasn’t ‘well-off’ by any means, but he wasn’t cheap enough to let his boyfriend pay for dinner. It was the principal of things! He turned to Yusaku head-on, earnestly and seriously.

“What kind of Prince Charming would I be if I let you pay the check?”

Somewhere in the city, an overworked, underslept professor was about to be dragged to a festival by an android for the second time this month. Unfortunately for the professor, this android was much bigger but only slightly less petulant than the one he might call his ‘sister.’

“I can’t believe you brought Curi to the fair and neither of you invited me!” Ai pouted, stamping his feet a little louder than necessary as he walked. 

“This is just like all the times the other Ignis would have work meetings and they never invited me!” Never mind the fact that the reason they stopped inviting him was because he never did any work in the first place... Ai quickly filed that memory away before it started to sting.

“Now we get to do what Ai want to do! Just be grateful I picked something we’ll both like. C’mon, let’s go before the boat leaves without us!”

There was not much better than sleeping in. Well, okay, he never slept much, if he was being completely honest, but today he had to get up early to finish his preparations.

He was, admittedly, relieved they were staying in for the day - the events of the past few months had been draining, to say the least, but if Ai was going to do him the kindness of not throwing a big bash with how drained he was at the idea of leaving the house, the least he could do was make sure it was still enjoyable to Ai.

Turning the best he can, he sighed and looped one arm around Ai. “Even if I did, it’s my birthday too, you know.” Implying, of course, they had an even say in this - although they, of course, would, on any other day as well.

Still eventually he had to wriggle out of Ai’s grasp and out of bed. Pulling on his hoodie instead of actually getting dressed, he ran to his computer, turning it on and pulling up some code. Double-checking it, he nods and pulls out a small card from his computer. Running back over, he sits on the bed.

“I made you ‘breakfast’. For your birthday.” Handing it over, he gives a small smile. “Using the code from that candy from Halloween - it should be what pancakes taste like.”

Ai began to pout as Yusaku slipped out of his arms, but his expression was soon replaced with one of glee as Yusaku handed him his present. “Aaww~ you shouldn’t have!” But it was clear by the Ignis’ sparkling eyes he was overjoyed.

Though he can process images in a fraction of a second, Ai still isn’t really sure what happened between that moment and the next. One second he’s holding the chip Yusaku oh-so-sweetly handed to him... and the next, his instincts have compelled him to toss the chip into his mouth and bite down on it much like a human would a potato chip. Without a second though, the microchip is crunched in between his synthetic molars with a resounding crack.

As he opens his mouth in surprise, he can hear the broken metal circuitry shift. Ai’s eyes find Yusaku’s and a blush spreads over a face already painted by what could best be described as ‘baffled embarrassment.’

“Umm...” he says, intelligently.

“Your cape.” They reach out, touching the outer hem of the cape and admiring the material before letting it flow back into place.

“The entire ensemble is magnificent. Who is your tailor?”

Ai smiled and began to turn.  

“Actually, I ma-” Catching proper sight of the stranger, Ai jumped back as if stunned. His face felt frozen in the same expression as he used his arms to gesture wildly at the newcomer.

“WHAT? What about you?!”

“Oh! You’re here a bit earlier than I expected.” Besides that, the alternate Ai (or ‘Au’ as Ai had nicknamed him) didn’t look particularly surprised to see Yusaku. “I see he isn’t with you.” Au turned around with a scoff and a shrug. “Just as well, he’s much too dangerous. I won’t have him in my house, no matter what my husband thinks.” Facing him again, Au presented Yusaku with a stack of pancakes.

“But not you, dear. I’m sure anyone who’s so similar to my husband must be a lovely person.” Just then, a loud crash sounded from upstairs. Au stiffened, immediately shouting, “what was that?”

“Nothing!” Came a chorus of children’s voices from through the ceiling and Au slumped into a chair at the kitchen table.

“I miss Yusaku...” He sighed, tiredly but fondly. “But I’m sure he’s off somewhere trying to save the world... You know how doctor’s can be.”

Feeling the telltale stirrings of a human slowly waking up from sleep, Ai gently wrapped his arms a little tighter around Yusaku.

“Nooo...” He protested quietly, even putting on that adorably dopey voice humans get when they’re half asleep. Scrunching his face, he hid it in Yusaku’s bedhead. Normally, Ai would jump out of bed on this very important day - dragging Yusaku along with him - but, just last year they’d had a big, energetic party more suited to Ai’s taste. Ai wanted to show Yusaku that he was more than happy to stay home and celebrate their birthday in the way that Yusaku would no doubt prefer. He was such a good and mature partner! ...Even if his preferred form of “compromise” was him hugging onto Yusaku like a clingy octopus.

Still... he was worried he wouldn’t be able to stop Yusaku workaholic nature completely, but maybe he’d be able to poke at the Ai-shaped weak spot in Yusaku’s cranky armor long enough to convince him to take the day off even though Ai didn’t have any big plans for them to go anywhere.

“You wouldn’t deny your boyfriend a hug on his birthday, would you?”

“I don’t wanna go,” Kuri confirmed. She had been excited about helping for the past week, always happy to go play with the big kids that Ai went to school with. Especially painting, an excuse to go get messy!

Today, though? She wasn’t feeling like it. Instead of being ready, she was still in her pjs, hair a tangled mess.

It may or may not have had something to do with staying out way too late the other day, playing in the snowfall to hit part of the island. Now she felt sleepy and warm, and not at all like painting with a bunch of people she didn’t know.

“Can we stay home instead?”

“‘Stay home?’“ Ai paused to give Kuri more than just a passing glance, noticing her telltale signs of sickness. His eyes immediately softened. 

“Yeah... Yeah! Of course we can.” Kicking off his shoes, he walked over and placed a hand on Kuri’s head. He frowned to himself; she did feel a little warm... He sympathized, remembering being sick when he was younger and how much he hated it.

“Change of plans: today is your day! We can do whatever you want, all day, and I’ll call both of our schools to tell them we won’t be attending.” Ai grabbed a blanket and knelt down to wrap it around his sister’s shoulders.

“Now... Are you tired? Do you want to sleep or stay up and do something else?”

How…Disconcerting.

It felt like a whole slew of memories had been incoming that he hadn’t expected, and for a moment, since it had started from the beginning, it felt…

As though perhaps he were regaining his memories. It was unlikely, he knew, they had all known, and he had been told, but it was even more unlikely for an entire group of people from different worlds to be on one island. There was a kind woman who had taken him in, who had also been lonely, and…

And then the memories grew up. And in the loss of fog that came with adolescence the realization it was on this island. Shaking his head, he pushed his head off his now-clammy forehead.

“What was…?” He stood, looking for Ai - his Ai, not…Well, his other Ai? What was that…

“Ai? Are you here?” He’d be able to tell the difference, because one he would be able to sense with Link Sense, and the other one he definitely wouldn’t.

Hearing Yusaku’s voice, Ai and his copy both snap their heads up.

“In the kitchen!” They both call out at the same time and Ai’s copy pales in a way his own SOLtis body wasn’t able to quite mimic. The copy gives a disbelieving chuckle, as if the fact that his Yusaku must also have a copy just hit him. 

“I-I... don’t think I can do this today...” the copy says as he sinks to the ground. Ai watches as a human version of himself sits on the floor of the kitchen with his knees pulled up to his chest. The ‘original Ai’ - as he likes to think of himself but he’s not even sure about that anymore - gives his copy and Yusaku an exasperated look, bordering on hysterical.

“Today? I don’t think I can deal with this ever.” Ai turns to face Yusaku, “it’s not-- they’re-- I thought they would be like simulation data-- but he’s not a digital being at all!” Ai flails his arms in a way he hopes portray his frustration. “He’s a bonafide human!”

“How does that even happen? Maybe this is a simulation... an important part of the scenario is always that the participants don’t know it’s a simulation after all...” Ai suddenly feels the need the indulge in his petulant desire to sit on the floor along side his copy and lowers himself to the ground. Soon both Ais are looking up at Yusaku with nearly identical expressions of helplessness.

“You can always tell when people get bored in the city at the end of winter...”

“People start changing their wi-fi names a lot. Our neighbor two doors down recently changed hers to ‘Password is Gullible,’ which is pretty good, but not really my sense of humor. My favorite so far is ‘The Promised LAN.’“

If it was strange to be constantly, unconsciously aware of other peoples’ internet connections, he certainly didn’t seem to realize it.

A little Ignis popped out of Yusaku’s duel disk. 

“Do you know what today is, Yusaku-chan~?”

Honestly, Ai didn’t expect Yusaku to know what was special about today. Yusaku wasn’t exactly a romantic, so Ai was almost certain Yusaku wouldn’t care enough about holidays like this to even give them a passing thought. That didn’t bother Ai; he knew Yusaku loved him in his own way. Rather, Ai was simply using this question as a lead-in to whatever he had planned for Yusaku today.

Eagerly, he waited for an answer.

“Who’s that? Is he new?” Ai leaned over the lunch table to whisper conspiratorially to his boyfriend, Ciscera. “I feel like I recognize him.”

Ciscera looked up, a bored expression on his face. As the class secretary, he made it his duty to recognize all of his peers -- and as his boyfriend, he was kind enough to remind Ai: The class president who was so hopeless with faces. Ciscera recognized the student Ai was looking at at a glance.

“You should recognize him, he’s not exactly new. He transferred here at the beginning of the year.” Ciscera turned his attention back to the prom planning papers that they had spread all over their table. “’Fujiki’ is his name. He hangs out with those punk kids.”

Ai turned around to look at the class secretary, “’punk kids’?” Ciscera waved his hand dismissively.

“You know -- skipping class or sleeping through it, barely doing enough homework to pass, hardly in any clubs. You aren’t exactly in the same cliques.” Ciscera gave him a look, which Ai returned even though he knew it was a loosing battle. It’s true, Ai was a bit of a prep. Not doing homework he could understand, but dropping his extracurriculars? Never.

“...Anyway. I’m going to bring some of these to the main office before lunch is over.” Ciscera waved him goodbye without saying anything or even looking up. Ai huffed and gathered the papers in his arms before stomping away. His boyfriend was so rude! He didn’t even know why he started dating Ciscera! In fact... he doesn’t remember when they started dating either... He doesn’t remember much about their relationship at all, actually... And this Fujiki? Him transferring earlier in the year could explain why Ai recognized him, but Ai had a strange feeling that he knew the other student better than that...

Ai was so preoccupied with his thoughts, he didn’t see the other before it was too late and ran right into another student. Startled, he dropped his papers everywhere. Ai jumped back and began picking them up before anyone could step on them.

“Sorry! Sorry, that was my fault. You’re not hurt, are you?”
