I've introduced a new Doctor Who OC, Aeris, and one of her earliest adventures is The Christmas Invasion. Here's the scene where Harriet Jones destroys the Sycorax and the Doctor deposes her out of spite in response. I've tried to give Aeris a somewhat nuanced view of the whole situation here. How will Shareen and Iliana react in this scene. Will they take Harriet's side or the Doctor's, or will they take a third, more nuanced viewpoint?
Huge bolts of green energy shot out of five points on the ground and converged in mid-air to form one enormous bolt of energy, which shot out into space and hit the retreating Sycorax ship, destroying it.
"What is that?" Rose gasped. "What's happening?"
The Doctor was furious. He and Aeris walked over to Harriet. "Was that really necessary?" Aeris asked her, disappointed.
"Yes, it was." Harriet answered.
"That was murder." the Doctor glared.
"That was defence." Harriet argued. "It's adapted from alien technology. A ship that crashed to Earth 10 years ago."
"But they were leaving." Aeris reminded. "They'd surrendered and weren't a threat anymore."
"The Doctor said himself they'd go back to the stars and tell others about the Earth." Harriet countered and turned to the Doctor. "I'm sorry, Doctor, but you're not here all the time. You come and go. It happened today, Mr Llewellyn and the Major. They were murdered. They died right in front of me while you were sleeping. In which case, we have to defend ourselves."
Aeris could see her point, but the Doctor didn't agree. "Britain's golden age." he said disdainfully.
"It comes at a price." Harriet said gravely.
"I gave them the wrong warning." the Doctor scowled. "I should've told them to run, as fast as they can, run and hide because the monsters are coming: the human race."
"Doctor..." Aeris began, realising that things were starting to get out of hand.
"Those are the people I represent." Harriet said defiantly. "I did it on their behalf."
"Then I should've stopped you." the Doctor snarled.
"What does that make you, Doctor? Another alien threat?" Harriet challenged.
"Don't challenge me, Harriet Jones." the Doctor spat, stepping angrily towards her. "'Cos I'm a completely new man. I don't need swordfights, I'm stronger than that. I could bring down your government with a single word."
"Except you're not going to." Aeris tried to stop the Doctor before he went too far.
"You're the most remarkable man I've ever met." Harriet said coolly to the Doctor. "But I don't think you're quite capable of that."
"No, you're right. Not a single word." the Doctor said, looking down at her. "Just six."
"Six." the Doctor reinforced, and they stared at each other for a few seconds; a battle of wills.
"Alright, Doctor, come on. Let's go." Aeris tried calm things down. "What's done is done and we can't change it."
Unfortunately, the Doctor wasn't content to let it go like Aeris was, so he walked around Harriet and approached the aide. "Don't you think she looks tired?" he whispered in the aide's ear, then he turned on his heel and walked away with Mickey and the Tylers following.
Aeris facepalmed. Now the Doctor had really done it.
"What did he say?" Harriet asked her aide anxiously.
"Oh, uh... nothing, really." the aide lied.
"I... nothing! I don't know!"
"Doctor!" Harriet called after the retreating Time Lord. "Doctor, what did you... what was... what did he say?! What did you say, Doctor? Doctor?!"
The Doctor ignored her, as did Mickey, Rose and Jackie.
"What did he say?" Harriet asked Aeris anxiously.
"I'm afraid he's done to you what the Tories did to Thatcher in the 90's." Aeris told her gravely. "I'm sorry. I couldn't stop him. It's out of my hands now."
Very interesting to see an OC with a more nuanced viewpoint!
Shareen, I'm afraid, will not have a nuanced viewpoint, much less take the Doctor's side. She basically reams into him over this and, later, when they learn of the Master becoming the Prime Minister, wastes no time in telling the Doctor 'I told you so' (really rubbing salt into the wound there, lol!).
Iliana, I think, might be a bit more nuanced due to her past as the Manipulator. She can see both sides of the situation, and can therefore understand everyone's actions, but I think even she will find the Doctor's actions a step too far.
