that makes sense! i like reading people's character analysis and discussing it. you also don't have to worry about spoiling me if you want to discuss it in depth, i've played the whole series.
how far have you gotten, though? asking just in case, i don't want to accidentally put DLC spoilers or spoil an ending you haven't played yet
That's fine, personally I've worked through the main Route E (my current favourite) and A and am slowly making my way through the other routes on my way up to S+ so I can personally do the DLC and Hermit's Room (and Interlude) but I do have a general working knowledge of what's going on in the other routes (like what happens with Nina, Shinano, and so on) but I just didn't want to spoil stuff for anyone else who might stumble across my post.
how would you have liked haruki's situation to be explored more? you don't have to answer if you don't want to, i'm just kind of curious
Well from my personal experience, it's just kind of rare to see a game (or any media really) with a canonically plural character without it being made to be a whole Thing™ where they must "struggle against the enemy within to overcome their evils" or something like that without going into the without going into the complexities about human nature or that people, kind of don't really work that way? At all???
Yeah, I know it's trope viewed that's supposed through a fictional lens so naturally there would be some liberties taken (which I won't really go it detail because I don't want to get too much into spoiler territory) and that you also have to take into consideration the background of the work in question.
Like, mental health (and Haruki's situation in particular even removing a bit of the more fantastical psychic elements) deal with stuff that has been viewed as kind of a tricky thing (not just in the west but particularly so in countries such as Japan and other eastern nations where Cell of Empireo takes place; like I think I remember reading a paper that mentioned an anecdote that it was actually pretty recently, around the mid '90s, that the concept of PTSD was introduced over to Japanese psychs or something like that as an example.)
So taking into the account the whole cult background (and everything that can do to a person in of itself) and slapping on the aforementioned social considerations (because remember the "Current Day" story of COE takes place around 2015 with the flashbacks going even further back to about the Soviet Era) and taking in these added factors into the the understanding of things it would be just kind of neat to see, I guess. Though to keep things short, I honestly just really like the idea of of characters working through traumas through the various concepts of 'self' in the many forms that it might take.
If that makes sense.
nice to see someone else playing coe!! thank you for your art, what did you think of it?
Thank you! I just wanted to give back to a somewhat smaller fandom with a little bit of my own. What I thought of it? Well, the game itself was very interesting in a technical standpoint (I gained some interesting experience in how to do local changing with games which was nice) and I can appreciate the spritework and art design (the face Atou's sprite makes when he's straight up dissociating is kind of a nice touch and I can appreciate the nice pink colour of his hair of that one particular form.) The game's music when in the church before everything goes to shit is pretty and it really does give a nice calming juxtaposition to the horrors that you had faced before with the psychic zombie virus type thing brought about by the whole weird christian-coded cult. I am weirdly invested in that whole sort of queer coded narrative going on along with Haruki's whole plural thing which I kind of wish was explored a bit more.
I've been reading through the manga as well (hurray for mediocre Japanese skills!) and I really dig the artist's depictions of Haruki and how expressive he is in it and I hope that they can at least finish the series in its entirety and that the run isn't cancelled before then or anything because that'd suck. But honestly there's also the fact that Haruki's kind of a fucked up skrunkly little guy going through the horrors and I can dig that in a man.
How many of these little tumblr milestones are there??? I wonder if there's a list somewhere detailing them all.
Breaking News: Perfectly Normal Traveling Korean Salaryman Has a Meet Cute with Perfectly Normal Local Detective!
[Spring Before the Rain]
They first met when Kojima was kind of having a real bad time because of plot-relevant reasons and just straight up spiraling so to avoid having to deal with the whole thing involving his Feelings™ he decided to camp out in the school bathroom. Suddenly, and out of complete nowhere this scrawny and wild-eyed looking first year with leaves in his hair and god-knows how much dirt on his once bright white uniform literally comes sliding in. The two of them stare at each other for a long awkward moment before the other boy (who he eventually comes to learn is named Ishida) offers him the following rush of words:
“Sorry‚ I got thrown off a cliff on my way here. Can I use the mirror and sink while you have your panic attack so I can clean up and not be late to orientation?”
What the actual fuck?
“...Y-Yeah???”
The other proceeded to smile beatifically at him as he offered a chipper word of thanks and then proceeded to ramble on about something the other hadn't the slightest presence of mind to even begin to parse out but there was something about the sheer absurdity situation coupled with the bespectacled boy's nervous-but-bright smile as he chattered along that settled that darkness deep within and had him slowly unclenching his hands so when the morning bell rang and the other hurriedly snagged it to haul him along he didn't even protest.
(They were still late to their first day and had received quite the earful from their new homeroom teacher but as he focused on the taller boy beside of him as opposed to his usual modus operandi of nodding along and appearing contrite to appease the irate authority figure he found that couldn't really bring himself to really care.)

[Lexios Zikas] This is my Obey Me + Nightbringer OC. He's a 29 (give or take a few centuries due to meddlesome time shenanigans) year old Greek man with Oni blood in him because his Great Great Grandma decided to have a harem full of various supernatural creatures. He has wholeheartedly decided to follow in her footsteps.
(Also to dye the tips of his hair pink because why the heck not.)
[You are ██████] No, who are you really?
[You are Haruki Atou]
Story Idea:
A bit of a continuation of the E Route staring that pink-haired alter of Haruki (who I am henceforth dubbing as "Calamity") where Otowa (reluctantly) agrees to go along with Calamity's bullshit (partially because he feels slightly responsible for letting Haruki go alone to that shitshow with the cult so at the very least he might as well try and see if there was any way that he could mitigate even a little bit of the damage from this new alter of his friend and partially because if he said no the unstable esper would most certainly kill him and that would not be ideal) and Calamity (because they are very fucking traumatized and not at all okay) immediately turns into a clingy yandere towards the other (along with Aiba who was kidnapped sometime prior because the other was also clearly worried about him after that whole thing.) And because of aforementioned events Calamity is also kind of convinced that if they let the other men out of their sight then something will happen and they cannot watch anyone else close to them die. So the two become his (only somewhat unwilling because Aiba is also dweeb chuunibyo at heart who would jump to serve at the hands of a fledgling 'Dark Lord' and life is weird enough already) second-in-commands (and maybe eventually hosts for the cells as well because of the whole need to keep them close thing.)
While all this is happening outside we also have Haruki and Alpha playing cards (and cheating at it) with a reluctant and very much dissociating Atou in headspace while his other headmates watch Calamity on the proverbial big screen unintentionally try and fail to woo his new qpp partners.
The Great Hououin Kyouma and his Pokémon Partner Celebi!
