Since Chirrut’s lightbow is referred to as “handcrafted" and “an antique” and it’s an ancient design built by and for a race that has presumably longsince died out (or at least left the temple), I’m guessing this weapon wasn’t necessarily just something that he already had on hand.
Think about it. Chirrut clearly prefers to fight with his quarterstaff. Imagine how frustrating this is to Baze, who is literally trying to keep his husband out of trouble 99.73% of the time he isn’t causing it himself, “at least use something with some firepower going toe to toe with blasters holding nothing but a literal stick is going to get you killed someday,” etc. Finally Chirrut relents after the 862nd lecture and permits Baze to buy him One (1) single long-range weapon, but is this any weapon? No. He needs it to have a spiritual connection to that shit, how else could he be expected to learn how to use it?
What I’m saying is Baze probably found this old ass broken down lightbow in the deepest vaults of the temple and literally fixed up a centuries-old weapon as an anniversary present because he’s a fucking sap and Chirrut pretends to be put upon and makes Baze carry it when his back starts to hurt but it’s one of his most valuable possessions, not because he’s materialistic by any means, but because he understands the meaning behind it and he loves Baze so much, too much for words.
