thinking about how weird Dinosaur in animal kingdom is. like truly just an anomaly of a ride. every factoid about it that makes up its history sounds like a compilation of someone making up lies as they go along
some fun facts about the ride Dinosaur that i can remember off the top of my head (if these are wrong feel free to correct me iâm just going off of what i know)
yes the ride is just called Dinosaur. it was initially called Countdown to Extinction (sharing its name with a megadeth song that predates the ride for like. literally no reason?) but when the Extremely Well Remembered And Not Forgotten at all early 2000âs cgi movie from disney named Dinosaur came out, in the year 2000 they ârethemedâ it to the movie
ârethemeâ is in quotations because the ride has genuinely nothing to do w the movie or itâs plot bar for a) the name and b) having the same dinosaur species the movie has featured prominently In The Ride c) having a very dopey looking statue of the main brachiosaurus from the movie outside the ride
it is perhaps the strangest ride retheme in history because they didnât even switch out the dinosaur species for the ones featured in the movie they just confidentially had the same dinosaur species . like before the movie happened. the characters in the movies have names but they donât refer to any of the on ride dinos with those names at all
it is the flagship ride of dinoland usa, a kitschy, cheap âcounty fairâ vibes type land in the back alley of animal kingdom, which otherwise has beautiful lush natural theming. this land is very widely detested even by theme park enthusiasts for its pretty clear cost cutting methods of existing. originally the very ambitious high fantasy creature heavy beastly kingdom was supposed to be built on the land or close to the land it occupies but dinoland usa was built instead because they kind of ran out of money. people hate it even more because of that. all the rides in dinoland usa are typical spinning fairground stuff with happy smiling dinosaurs with the exception of Dinosaur which is incredibly odd because
Dinosaur is largely considered the most terrifying ride disney engineering has ever produced, even more than tower of terror, even more than haunted mansion
it has the same track system, like seriously the exact same layout as the indiana jones ride in disneyland . if you overlay them on top of each other it is a 1:1 match
the reason it is considered so terrifying is that it does not do a great job of convincing you that it has peril. tower of terror, mission space (the orange mission at least) and the haunted mansion all have reputations for being explicitly frightening in some degree. people know that if they bring their kids on it they will cry. however because Dinosaur is in a land of cutesy dinosaur flat rides and has a pretty low height requirement many parents think it will be similar in tone to the rest of dinoland usa, like a slow moving dark ride akin to a fantasyland ordeal that educates kids on dinosaurs
it is a dark ride! but it is a dark ride that has Drops and sharp turns and intense elements, akin to a slower moving rollercoaster
the story of dinosaur is you are being sent back in time to retrieve a dino for a dino institute. the institute is also like a weird tourist attraction thing where theyâre just sending tourists back in time to look at dinosaurs i guess?
the process of retrieving this dinosaur is never explained it just happens ,further adding to the uncertainty of the ride
the institute employee character who sends you back in time for some reason - like it is never explained why he wants to do this - sends you back in time to The Minutes Before the Extinction Meteor Hits And Kills Everything instead of sending you back literally any earlier point in time. heâs just doing it for a laugh. thatâs the only feasible explanation He was not told to do this
you can hear him talking to you thru the ride. he is very jovial about the peril you are in
there is literally constant death in this ride. the first thing you see is a dinosaur eating another dinosaur. dinosaurs in the ride are screaming in your face loud as hell and running for their lives. you are literally in a Mass Extinction Event. You Feel Like You Are Going To Die and in the story that is treated like a very real possibility. the meteor looms overhead. there is no joy or cheer in the entire ride bar the guide characters occasional jokey quips in the face of Real Tangible Danger.
most people who attend the park Dinosaur is in have no idea that this ride exists
it will probably be demolished soon
btw i say âit will probably be demolished soonâ not because it is so popular. there are Concrete Plans to completely retheme this entire land. like that is going to happen in the next few years so uh. go while you can i guess
this too
by the way i say this all with love. i love this weird ass ride. this is not a scornful post i just think theme park stuff is funny to explain to peopleđ
The "Shared species" thing isn't a coincidence, the ride and movie were developed together and the artbook for the movie claims that Countdown to Extinction was tossed around as a working title for the movie at one point too.
There is also a tie-in book from when the ride opened focused around Dr. Seeker's nephew being the one to go on the time travel mission (his paleontologist parents left him with Seeker for summer vacation), so that just makes the whole "Let's send random people to the meteor strike" even funnier.

I am sorry to report that Richard Sherman the Disney legend has past away at age 95. The man and his brother that gave us Disney classic songs such as Mary Poppins and Winnie the Pooh to name some.

Finally, theyâre joking around with the voice casting of the current Figment and giving me the theme park/IP mashup Iâve been craving, albeit as just a social media video.
Now then, either bring the Jim Henson Creature Shop aboard that live-action Figment movie or just make Muppet Journey into Imagination with Dreamfinder as the token human.
