Watson Birthday Prompt Fest!

Returning for 2026, the Watson Birthday Prompt Fest! According to some sources, John Watson’s birthday is August 7. So, lets celebrate it, by having a prompt fest!

Come over to the Ao3 collection and leave a prompt or claim a prompt. Open to all Sherlock Holmes related fandoms, and all genres, ratings, and relationships (ships, gen, etc). The main rule being that all fanworks should focus on our beloved Watson.

Prompting and claiming will be open until August 7, 2025.

i don't think watson puts much importance on his own fame - yes, he wrote the stories, but he did so to highlight holmes. and that worked! holmes has, even though reluctantly, become a household name, and gets more cases than ever. watson thinks its wonderful that so many people recognize holmes for how brilliant and captivating he really is.

if watson sometimes wishes that he, too, was something special and not an average medical man with an average build and average intelligence and if he sometimes wishes to, for once, step out of the shadow that he doesn't mind staying in as long as holmes is being seen, he never mentions it.

An ACD John whose health really is weak when he starts living with Sherlock, just absolutely destroyed from the war.

So John tires easily. Sherlock isn't aware, perceptive as he is, of the true nature of John's weakness. He drags John along to every case. John is afraid to let him down and follows without complaint, but each case ends with him feeling worse and weaker.

He falls truly ill one day. Too worn to even rise from bed and burning hot with fever. It feels like he's back in Afghanistan, like he's in the war again, like he's dying in a foreign country and there's nothing he can do to stop it--

If it weren't for Sherlock, petting his hair and sponging his sweat-sheened brow and murmuring,

"I'm sorry. I didn't know. I'm so sorry, my dear Watson."

the three garridebs au where everything is the same except holmes crashes out even more and colossally fucks up because he does confess his love for watson right then and there in the heat of the moment. yes, the police are right at the door. no, they don't arrest him because this is the most touching display of emotion they've ever seen, and lestrade would fire any constable who dares to rid him of his favorite consulting detective

What do you think of the idea/theory that Watson was in on Holmes' disappearance? That HE knew Holmes faked his death and went into hiding and what we read in Final Problem/Empty House is all part of the grand lie he and Holmes concocted /together/.

Which opens up the angst potential of Watson KNOWING Holmes is alive but not much more than that. Where is he? Is he alright? Will he come back? CAN he come back?

But he can't speak of it to anyone. As far as everyone else knows Holmes is dead and Watson must play the grieving friend to perfection or else the entire plot will be compromised.

OOOOHH that is an interesting idea indeed!! especially because it's been established (at least in the soviet adaptation) that john's a shit actor and probably would find it really hard to play the part convincingly. except maybe at one point, he doesn't anymore, because he hasn't heard from holmes in a while and has no idea how he's faring and it's killing him.

i also imagine watson would be absolutely furious about the fact that he cannot help. i like to think it's one of his main ways he shows his care and affection - acts of service and helping others. this is holmes' most important mission, and holmes has forbidden him to help. don't tell me that wouldn't piss him off.

and the fact that holmes had no idea how long his mission would take. it could be anything from a month to a decade. both of them would probably fear that by the time they see each other next, their hair will have gone white :(

she is the doctor to check watson over after he's shot during the three garridebs case. also it seems like she's entered another lame heterosexual marriage, but i hc wiggins as bi and her as some sort of gender-nonconform (haven't decided on what exactly yet) because the irregulars are all queer 2 me

i'm aware that several already exist, but i still need to give sherlock holmes the "what if it was a musical" treatment. if i could write songs, at least. and i have no idea how it would work, but somehow the first act has to end right after reichenbach to leave both watson and the audience who for some reason don't know that holmes faked his death devastated. also much like i want this to be a thing in a screen adaptation at some point (please. i am begging) there's gotta be a forbidden romance johnlock plot. the potential is crazy and i'm sad creators are too cowardly to adapt sherlock holmes set in the original 1880s/90s while adding them falling in love because it would be delicious to watch

oh soviet sherlock holmes i love you. i love your silly prankster holmes who is still kind and polite and caring. i love your very sweet, a little bumbling and yet smart and capable watson. i love the way you allow those two to be so physically affectionate with each other, and i love the way they look at each other like the other hung the moon and the stars. i love your mrs hudson who's such a delight and always up to participate in one of sherlock’s schemes. i love your baskervilles adaptation specifically - the gloomy atmosphere, sir henry, the double hug holmes and watson share when reunited!! i love the emotion the characters have and are not afraid to show at any given time. i love your comedic genius lestrade. i love
