The Best Way to List a New Product On The Amazon Marketplace
We will walk through the way to list a product on the Amazon marketplace so that it is both found by customer and enticing enough to add it to their cart.
A few notes before we begin:
We will be using the Add a Product tool, which is best if you are only starting with a few products. Be sure to check the product restrictions and categories that require approval before you add a product.
Gather Your Information
Step 1: Search Terms: Finding the right search terms is easy and quick if you follow our search term guide.
Step 2: Product Images: Amazon has several rules for posting images for your products. View our tutorial for creating product images in your home with your smartphone.
Step3: Product Descriptions: This part is always the most time consuming for any seller, but we make it simple and quick with our product description tips and tricks.
Want to Sell More on Amazon?
Sorry to interrupt your reading, but we have a new book that we are really excited about. Selling More is a weekend workshop in retail math, increasing sales and traffic to your products. Check it out. Now, back to the program.
Create a New Amazon Listing
On the Inventory link, select Add a Product and follow Amazon's workflow to create your new product.
Find your product » Classify » Identify » Add details » Add images » List your inventory
Newly created products typically appear on Amazon.com within 15 minutes, although some details and images might not appear for 24 hours.
Gaining Momentum for your New Product
It may take anywhere from 1 day to 2 weeks before you start to see visitors to your product. I recommend starting a small Amazon Marketing Campaign for your product. This will get your product in front of customers and the sales rank can begin to build. In vest the gross margin of a few of your products to sell even more. Once the product sees consistent sales, you can begin to pull back on the marketing campaign.
Using Search Terms to Get Your Products Found on Amazon
Search terms are the primary way that customers find products on Amazon. If your product's title or search term matches the customer's term, the more likely it is to show up in the rankings.
Now, Amazon also uses sales rank to show products in an order that will likely result in a sale.
Finding Search Terms
Good news. Since Amazon uses title in their search algorithm, you do not need to duplicate any terms in your title as a search term.
Here are the steps that I take to secure great search terms.
1. Google Keyword Tools
Since we don't have anyway, yet, to determine which search terms are the most popular on Amazon, we will use Google's rankings in their Keyword Planner. This tool will let you search for a single term, and let you know how many are searching for it, and similar ones.
If you are doing several types of products, I would start a list in a Word document or Excel spreadsheet.
2. Ubersuggest
Ubersuggest tells you the top 10 searches for every letter in the alphabet, giving you a wider view of what people type when they search for your product.
For example, if you are making a listing for a Pie Plate, the terms that will come up will be "Pie Plate for Tarts" and "Blue Pie Plate" . You can use these as search terms or in your descriptions for the product.
If gives you an idea of what people are using your products for and with.
3. Amazon Ads
If you are willing to spare $5.00 you can learn so much about your products. Granted, they need to be live on the site, but this is a way to gather information about how Amazon customers shop and reach your products.
It works like this. Create a campaign for all of your new products. Create an ad group for each individual product. When it asks for keywords for each of your products, use all of the suggested Amazon keywords and add every single search term you can think of using Steps 1 and 2 above. Let the ad run for a few days.
Go back and look at the impressions (how many times your product showed up for that search term) and the click through rate (how many times a customer clicked compared to impressions). Note the most successful keywords for your ad group and add them to your product search term listing (or product description if you are out of terms).
1. In Seller Central > Avertising > Campaign Manager
2. Create Campaign and set a daily budget you are comfortable with.
3. Create an Ad Group for a Product or Product group
Campaign: Keyword Research
Ad Group 1: Pie Plates
Default CPC: $0.10
SKUs: Select the single or several skus that fall into this category
Keywords: pie plate, bakeware, quiche plate, baking supplies....
Amazon's tips
Do not use misspellings as search terms. Amazon.com's search engine compensates for common customer misspellings and also offers corrective suggestions.
When entering several words as a search term entry, you don't need to use punctuation. Our system ignores commas. Just make sure to put spaces between your words if you want them treated as separate terms. The word pillowcases is a different search term than pillow cases..
You don't need to use simple stemming variations. Our search engine performs basic stemming. For example, it will treat a search for gloves the same as a search for glove.
Have any tips for generating keywords that attract customers? Add them in the comments!
Keep calm and happy searching,
Susan

Writing Quick and Irresistible Product Descriptions
Hello Sellers!
How many times have you created a new listing and stared at the blank descriptions area of your Seller Central and just could not get inspired? Writing, even technical writing, requires that your brain to be fairly and somewhat present. Breaking Bad can not be on in the background, ScanPower radio must be silenced and your loved ones muzzled. Not really, but really. Concentration is key, or is it?
Being an innovative (quite frankly lazy) seller, I created a template to help inspire me to create quick copy that helps our customer-friends add products to the cart. Here goes.
They tell you not to be passionate about what you sell, but I would say this is the one time you need to get giddy about your stuff. Let's get stupidly in love industrial chemical beakers. Fall head over heels for your socket wrenches. Make out with your Gluten Free Vanilla Swirl Cake Batter 6 pack. Wait, no.
But, if you are complacent, your customer will be, too.
1. Just Write The Opening
When I get stumped, I just used this handy formula to jumpstart my brain to get excited about what I am selling.
[Adjective]. [Adjective]. And [Adjective]. This [Adjective] + [Product name] + [Why the customer needs it.]
Example: Fast. Stylish. And matchless in quality. This unparalleled gadget is the absolute best smartphone for your fast-paced life.
2. Keep Phrases Handy
Sometimes I just have enough energy to just fill in some blanks. Having a few sentences and phrases around helps.
Phrases
...best experience possible...
...most [blank] ever...
...works perfectly with...
From the moment you...
Sentences
This [product] is [description] , yet [positive outcome] .
Ex. This gadget is mini, yet powerful.
This [product] is [description] , so [positive outcome] .
Ex. This phone is slight, so that you can take it everywhere.
This [product] has [feature] , so [positive outcome] .
Ex. This ski suit has built in hand warmers, so that you can stay out in the snow as long as you want.
This [product] was created to...
This [product] was features...
3. Keep Great Words Around
This is a list of my favorite adjectives. These are positive words for most major descriptions, even if the description is not so positive. Remember, we are falling in love. And love is blind. So, that pattern on the dress is not eye-scorching, it is alluring.
Perfect
Absolute, excellent, expert, foolproof, matchless, sound, unequalled, complete, optimal, practical, features, quality, unparalleled, classic, form, modern, power
Small
Little, mini, petite, modest, pocket-sized, and slight
Large
broad, full, generous , grand, plentiful, vast
Beautiful
alluring, stunning, appealing, divine, exquisite and refined
Cheap
wallet-friendly, economical, budget, bargain, steal
Use
Purpose, benefit from, features, functions
I hope this hels you jump start your brain to help your customers fall in love with your products as you temporarily are. Now, go back to being coldly indifferent because if they don't sell, you are breaking up.
Keep calm and happy writing,
Susan
Inspiration Notes: Success
"Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm." - Winston Churchill
Inspiration Notes: These are 6 x 4 inch entrepreneur quotes that can be printed on Notecards. I like to keep these handy on the days that I am not feeling quite so confident. It keeps me inspired and allows me to tinker with my design passion.
I love to read about entrepreneur heroes for many reasons. Hearing about how they became successful is fascinating, but have found out that I have always learned more from how they handled defeat, failure and setbacks. And there seem to always be setbacks. I have gleaned that the path of success is not always a smooth one. For some reason this is very comforting to me. When I have a setback, the first thing that enters my head is the tiny voice that says "give up".
But, then I begin to think about the setbacks of some of the biggest entrepreneurial names. I truly try to imagine myself in their place. What if I was living in a friends basement after a failed business or filed for bankruptcy? Or kicked out of my own company like Steve Jobs? Or have something fail on a global, million dollar scale? Would I have the will to keep going and building businesses? Yup. This is a choice, everyday. I choose not to work in an office, live in the rat race and commute. I choose independence and wealth making. I am a machine and nothing is going to stop me. As crazy as running my own business makes me, there is nothing else that I would rather do.
Here are some examples that serve as a mantra for me:
The Beatles were turned down by every major label, and some even twice.
Richard Branson was dyslexic in school and struggled with grades.
Robert Kiyosaki lived in a friends basement when his first business collapsed.
Frederick W. Smith (FedEx) created Zapmail as competition to fax machines and lost his company $350 million.
Steve Jobs was forced to resign from Apple in 1985. They later asked him back.
And some days I want to pack it in because I lost a word document, or Amazon sales tax confusion. Ha! People have always done far more with far less.
For the successful ones, the voice in their head saying "keep going" was always louder than the negative one. Oftentimes the obstacles they were facing before they succeeded are larger than anything I am going through. But we are not alone in feeling defeated.
For some insght on dealing with setbacks read this interview with Richard Branson at Entrepreneur.com.
Keep calm and happy succeeding,
Susan
Professional Product Photography at Home (and Cheap!)
You can make professional product shots at home, and for less money than you think.
It is a common misconception amongst Amazon sellers that in order to have clean and beautiful product shots, you need a professional photographer or professional equipment. Below, I will walk through suggestions and steps for taking perfect product shots from home or your home office.
Equipment:
1. Camera (we will use the iPhone 5 as an example)
2. Clamp lights and light bulbs
3. White cardstock
4. White sheet or pillowcase
5. Two medium clamps
Recommended:
1. Tripod
2. A box
3. Wax paper
Studio Setup
Much of your setup will depend on the size of your products. If you are lucky, this may be something that you can do from your dining room table.
For the studio backdrop, we will need to make line-less background.
Background
The goal is to have an infinite looking background, without creases and folds. Any flubs or issues will just have to be edited out in post, so spend a little time perfecting, ironing and smoothing your backdrop. It will save you time in the long run. This is where cardstock comes in handy. It is bright white, and does not need to be ironed.
For the setup, I use a standing box and clamp an ironed sheet or pillowcase to the widest side. I drape the sheet down until it makes a curve in the fabric. Again, the size of the box and sheet depends on what I am photographing.
For some extra support, I lay a large piece of cardstock on top of the fabric, just where the curve starts to come down. This is perfect for smaller items. For larger items, you can just use the sheet.
Lighting
Lighting is very important. Getting this right will give your products the “studio feel”. For smaller products, I find it easier to use natural lighting and and one single clamp light overhead.
For larger products, you might need two or even four clamp lights. For products smaller than 7 inches high, one light clamp will do. The goal of lighting your products is to reduce deep shadows. A light diminished shadow is perfectly natural, but a shadow that extends 20% past the product looks homemade.
I set up the camera in front of the source of natural light, and one light above the product. So, if you are using a window, it should be behind you. If you have products that are glass or plastic, you may experience a glare from the window. I would recommend adding wax paper over the window. This will allow the light to come in and but reduce the direct light glare.
I love clamp lights for lighting product shots. I often load up on them at Home Depot. They are cheap and amazingly versatile. I also buy a multi plug extension cord for all of them. Move your lights around until you get the shortest shadow you can, while still illuminating the product.
Camera Setup
My absolute favorite camera for product photography is the Canon Rebel XTi. It is a DSLR and crazy-powerful, but it is a little pricey for casual product photography. If you really, really want one, but can not quite justify the expense- checkout the refurb section of the Canon store. Bodies start at around $250-$300. So, for the purposes of this demonstration, I used my handy iPhone and any smartphone camera will do. It truth, this was a perfect alternative. I could quickly snap pictures and just send them to my dropbox account with the push of a button. By the time I got to my computer- they were loaded and ready.
I used the default settings with no flash. This is important. The flash will ruin the lighting you so carefully just setup.
Taking the Picture
I use a full size camera tripod for all of my product shots. It was easy to just balance the iPhone on the top of the tripod and snap a picture. Also, all product shots are fairly consistent when you are able to line the camera up on the same tripod. The goal is to get a straight shot of the product- head on.
Get as close to the product as you can with out fish-eying it. You know, where one side seems distorted or out of focus. Amazon will let you upload 3000 x 3000px product image, which is what I recommend. Now with retna screens, images need to be sharper and larger. The minimum is 500px, and this will look fine on a non-retna screen, but in a year or two as technology shifts, you will long for better pictures.
Did you know that the top volume button on iPhone is also snaps a picture? This lets you hold the phone like a camera and snap pictures, without having to thumb the button on the screen.
Take three images every time. I always find a fuzzy image or two after I upload them to the computer. Add in an alternative shot with every shoot. If it is a handbag, show the inside. If it is food, show the nutrition label. Anything you would want to know about this image. The effort will pay you back in your conversion rates.
Amazon Rules
Since this is their sandbox and we are just playing in it, it would be good to know the rules before snapping away.
For your product images to appear properly, they must meet the following basic requirements:
Use one of the following formats: JPEG (.jpg) or GIF (.gif) (As a best practice, we recommend that your images be JPEGs)
Use a photographic image
Do not use animated images
Set the resolution to 72 dots per inch (DPI)
Set the size to at least 500 pixels (and up to 3000 pixels) on each side (We strongly recommend that you use consistently sized images)
To activate zoom, set it between 1280 and 3000 pixels on the longest side; to take full advantage of zoom we recommend at least 2560 pixels on the longest side
Use sRGB color mode
Use 8 bits per channel
Do not include spaces in the file names
Do not use any of the following characters in the file names: "[", "]", "*", "<", ">", "?", ":", "|"
In addition, we also recommend that you consider the aesthetics of the images you choose, because effective product images attract customers. Follow these aesthetic guidelines to ensure image quality:
The image accurately matches the product description in size and color
The image is a photo and not a drawing
The photo is taken at a flattering angle
The product is focused and well-lit
Close-up shots are not obscured by highlights or shadows
The product occupies at least 80 percent of the image area
The entire product is depicted in the image
The image includes only what the customer will be receiving (Accessories that are not part of the product should not be shown)
The image displays the exact quantity of items the customer will be receiving (For example, if the product is a single mixing bowl, do not include other bowls in different sizes and colors in the photo)
Backgrounds are simple and clean, and do not to distract from the product; ideally, the background is pure white
Images do not have borders, text, or other decorations
The one that makes me laugh is the request that the image be a photo not a drawing. Ha! What is this, the 1890’s?
Please no wild west era “wanted” posters of your products. Thank you. Love, Amazon.
Post Editing
For photo editing, I use Photoshop CS6. But, have you checked the prices on this? Quite an investment. I am going to walkthrough some more wallet friendly alternatives. If you are dead set on having the best of the best, and you want the full Photoshop- Adobe now offers a Creative Cloud monthly service fee. So, instead of paying upfront for the Adobe products, you can pay $10 to $30 a month and get access to everything Adobe has to offer. For the purposes of this project, this is not necessary.
FotoFuze
Originally intended for Etsy users, FotoFuze is a photo editing web software that exists to create white backgrounds for your products. It is incredibly intuitive. You create a product, upload the image into an album and highlight the area of the product. Fotofuze will do the rest.
Pixlr
Pixlr is as close as you can get to photoshop for free. It is a web based photo editor, which means you do not have to download software. It is easy and intuitive and offers many options for improve the color and balance of your photos.
For this photo, I used Crop, Eraser and Vibrance.
Photoshop
To round out the experiment, let's look at an image edited in Photoshop. In this image I was able to take out the yellow cast with Color Replace.
There are a few more alternatives to Photoshop available, if you are curious try Spashup and Inkscape.
Keep calm and happy photo snapping,
Susan

One Simple Change That Can Increase Sales on Your Product Page
These days retailers are looking for any small changes that will create a product detail page that gives the customer confidence in purchasing. If you look at most retailers' product pages, they have the manufacture logo prominently displayed.
Examples:
Zappos.com
Macys.com
While there may not be a place for the manufacture logo on an Amazon webstore, there is a very simple solution to this. Try adding the manufacturer logo to the alt images of your product images.
How to (in Inventory):
Inventory > Manage Inventory > Choose a Product > Hover over Actions > Edit Details > Choose the Images Tab > Upload the Manufacture logo as an "Alt" image.
Note: There is a faster way to make multiple changes to your products- using the product upload feature.
We have a handy "how to" here.
Using the product upload feature, you can apply the new logo images at one go, in excel.
Getting the logo URL for your Product upload:
1. Save the logo image to you computer.
2. Open your File Library. (Store Design > File Library)
2. Choose Upload Files, and select the logo image.
4. Click on the image (a blue outline will appear). Click on the View Current Version link. This will open the image in a new window. Keep this window open.
5. Copy this url and paste in into the alt image column of your product upload file.
